World Asteroid Day – Observed on June 30

  • The United Nations has proclaimed World Asteroid Day observed globally on June 30 every year in its resolution.
  • Asteroid Day is an annual global event which is held on the anniversary of the Siberian Tunguska event, which is considered by some to be the most harmful known asteroid-related event on Earth in recent history.
  • International Asteroid Day aims to raise public awareness about the asteroid impact hazard and to inform the public about the crisis communication actions to be taken at the global level in case of a credible near-Earth object threat.

About Asteroid:

  • An asteroid is a minor planet of the inner Solar System.
  • Historically, these terms have been applied to any astronomical object orbiting the Sun that did not resolve into a disc in a telescope and was not observed to have characteristics of an active comet such as a tail.

International Day of Parliamentarism – Observed on June 30

  • June 30 is observed as the International Day of Parliamentarism every year.
  • The Day was designated in 2018 by the United Nations General Assembly.
  • It marks the day of the establishment of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the global organization of parliaments in 1889.
  • The day celebrates parliaments and recognizes the significance of parliamentary systems of government in shaping modern societies.
  • The day acknowledges the importance of strong parliaments as the cornerstone of democracy, representing the voice of the people, passing laws, implementing laws and policies, and holding governments accountable.

Union Govt extends Atmanirbhar Bharat Rojgar Yojana deadline till March 2022

  • The government extended the Atmanirbhar Bharat Rozgar Yojana, which was launched in October last year to encourage employment generation, by nine months till March 31, 2022.
  • Around 21.42 lakh people have benefited from the scheme till June 18, 2021, with a total outgo of 902 crore.
  • Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated while announcing a slew of measures to revive the economy, “This scheme now, which was valid till June 30, 2021, is being extended till March 31, 2022“.

About the Scheme:

  • Launched on October 1, last year, the approved outlay under the Atmanirbhar Bharat Rozgar Yojana (ABRY), which is aimed at incentivizing employers for creation of new employment, restoration of loss of employment through EPFO, is 22,810 crore for 58.50 lakh estimated beneficiaries.
  • The beneficiaries are spread around 79,577 establishments.
  • The scheme is being implemented through the Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) and reduces the financial burden of the employers of various sectors/ industries and encourages them to hire more workers.

Swedish PM Stefan Lofven step down after losing no confidence vote

  • Sweden’s Prime Minister, Stefan Löfven, has stepped down a week after losing a no confidence vote, deciding to ask the speaker of the country’s deadlocked parliament to find a new government rather than call a snap election.
  • “It is the most difficult political decision he had ever taken.”
  • He added that he would stay on in a caretaker capacity because a snap election in mid-pandemic was “not what is best for Sweden”.

About Stefan Lofven:

  • Kjell Stefan Löfven is a Swedish politician serving as the prime minister of Sweden since 2014 and leader of the Swedish Social Democratic Party since 2012.
  • As of 28 June 2021, Löfven is the interim Prime Minister having tendered the government’s resignation as part of the process of trying to form a new cabinet.

Andhra Pradesh govt Launches SALT programme

  • Andhra Pradesh has started a programme to transform foundational learning in government schools for which the World Bank has approved a loan of 250 million dollars.
  • The main objectives of the programme called Supporting Andhra’s Learning Transformation (SALT) are strengthening foundation schools and providing training and skill development to teachers.
  • The five-year programme is result-oriented with the WB releasing funds after key goals are achieved.
  • The government has converted all Anganwadis into pre-primary schools and attached them to the nearest schools.
  • Minister Suresh stated the two years of pre-primary school would be considered as part of primary education.

Telangana CM Announced Rs 10 lakh financial assistance to Dalit families

  • CM K Chandrasekhar Rao called for an all-party meeting, June 27 to discuss and finalize the guidelines of the CM Dalit Empowerment Programme that is being initiated by the state government.
  • A decision was taken in the meeting to provide Rs 10 lakh financial assistance each directly to the bank accounts of eligible beneficiaries from the Dalit community.
  • It was also decided to earmark Rs 1200 crore for the empowerment programme.

About the programme:

  • CM Dalit Empowerment Programme aims to make members of the community financially self-sufficient.
  • In the first phase, from the total 119 assembly constituencies, 100 families from each constituency across the state will be provided with assistance.
  • This means, as per the government’s plan, a total of 11,900 people will benefit from the programme in the first phase.
  • The money would be transferred directly to the bank accounts of the eligible beneficiaries.

Google, Amazon, Microsoft take top spots as India’s most attractive employer brands: REBR Survey 2021

  • Technology giant Google India has emerged as the most ‘attractive employer brand’, followed by Amazon India and Microsoft India, says a survey.
  • According to the findings of Randstad Employer Brand Research (REBR) 2021, Google India scored high on financial health, strong reputation, and attractive salary and benefits parameters — the top three Employee Value Proposition (EVP) drivers.
  • Amazon India emerged as the runner-up, followed by Microsoft India.
  • Others in the top 10 most attractive employer brands in India for 2021 include Infosys Technologies at fourth place, Tata Steel (5th), Dell Technologies Ltd (6th), IBM (7th), Tata Consultancy Services (8th), Wipro (9th), and Sony (10th).

Axis Bank uses AWS to accelerate digital transformation

  • Private sector lender Axis Bank has selected Amazon Web Services (AWS) to accelerate its digital transformation program.
  • As part of a multi-year agreement, Axis Bank will use AWS to build a portfolio of new digital financial services and modernize core banking applications, reducing costs by nearly a quarter, in the process.
  • As part of a multi-year agreement, Axis Bank will draw on the breadth and depth of AWS services, including containers, database, and compute, to build a portfolio of new digital financial services to bring advanced banking experiences to customers, including online accounts that can be opened in under six minutes and instant digital payments, helping the bank increase customer satisfaction by 35% and lower costs by 24%.
  • The bank will also use Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), a web service that provides secure, resizable compute capacity in the cloud, Axis Bank will scale workloads on demand to support 10 million daily real-time payments through India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI), ensuring reliability and consistent performance.

Sylendra Babu IPS appointed as new DGP of Tamil Nadu

  • The State government appointed Dr C Sylendra Babu as Tamil Nadu’s new Director General of Police and head of police force with effect from July 1.
  • The incumbent DGP, JK Tripathy, retires after two years of service on June 30.
  • Chief Secretary V Irai Anbu issued a government order announcing the decision a day after the Union Public Service Commission’s empanelment committee recommended a list of names, suitable for the position.
  • The significant meeting saw the committee selecting three probables — C Sylendra Babu, Karan Singha (1987 batch), and Sanjay Arora (1988).

  • Journalist Palagummi Sainathhas been awarded the Fukuoka Grand Prize for 2021.
  • The award, established by Japan’s Fukuoka city and the Fukuoka City International Foundation, is given to individuals and organisations for their work in preserving Asian culture.
  • The Fukuoka Prize Committee mentioned Sainath is a committed journalist who has continued to investigate impoverished farming villages in India and captured the reality of the lifestyle of the residents in such areas.

  • Sainath was born in Chennai and has served as the editor of The Hinduand as the vice-editor of political magazine Blitz.

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk 2021 – Turkey & Azerbaijan Joint Military Drills Started in Baku          

  • On June 28, 2021, Turkey & Azerbaijan armies started joint military exercises Mustafa Kemal Ataturk – 2021 in Baku.
  • The three day drill will run until June 30, 2021.
  • The drill name is a reference to modern Turkey’s founder Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.
  • It Involves 600 soldiers, 40 tanks and armored vehicles, 20 cannons, seven war helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles and 50 other vehicles

Purpose :

  • To improve the interaction between the two countries’ army units during combat operations, to develop the commanders’ military decision-making skills and their ability to manage military units

Note : 

  • On June 15, Turkey and Azerbaijan signed the Shusha Declaration, a pact that focuses on defense cooperation and establishing new transportation routes.

Sida keralensis –  New Plant Species Found in Kerala               

  • A new Plant Species Sida keralensis found on the roadsides and wastelands in Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala.
  • Their findings have been revealed in the journal Phytotaxa.

About the Research Team :

  • A crew of researchers from the Jawaharlal Nehru Tropical Botanic Garden and Research Institute (JNTBGRI), Palode, consisting of E.S. Santhosh Kumar, S. Shailajakumari, A.K. Sreekala and R. Prakash Kumar (director, JNTBGRI) and Parthipan B. of S.T. Puccho College, Nagercoil.

About Sida keralensis :

  • Sida keralensis is an erect branched subshrub, rising to a top of 40-80 cm. 
  • The stems are greenish or barely purple-tinged.
  • It has 2 mm-long, brownish-black seeds and hanging yellow flowers.
  • The species is called after the State of Kerala.

 Note :

  • The genus Sida has about 250 species distributed within the tropical and sub-tropical areas, of which 22 will be present in India.

  • In May 2021, Researchers from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Bhopal discovered a new species of plant belonging to the African Violets family in Mizoram.

ISSF Shooting World Cup : Rahi Sarnobat Clinches Gold In 25m Pistol              

  • On June 28, 2021, Indian shooter Rahi Sarnobat won a gold medal in the women’s 25M pistol event at the 2021 International Shooting Sport Federation World Cup being held in Osijek, Croatia.
  • It is being held from June 22 to July 03, 2021.
  • Rahi shot 39 out of 50 in the 25m pistol final to win & It was India’s first gold at the ongoing edition of the tournament.
  • The silver went to France’s Mathilde Lamolle, who scored 31 out of 50.

About Rahi Sarnobat Achievements :

  • Sarnobat became India’s first pistol shooter to win a gold medal in the 25m pistol event in the ISSF World Cup in Changwon.
  • She won her first gold medal at the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune, India.
  • She had won two gold medals in 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi,
  • In the 2014 Commonwealth Games at Glasgow, she won gold in the women’s 25-metre pistol.
  • In 2014, she also won the bronze medal in the 25-metre pistol team event at the 2014 Asian Games at Incheon.
  • In May 2015, Rahi was recommended for the country’s prestigious Arjuna Award by the National Rifle Association of India.
  • On 22 August 2018, she became the first Indian woman to become an individual Asian games gold medallist in shooting by winning the 25 meter pistol event with a Games record score of 34.
  • Rahi won the gold medal at the Munich World Cup event in 2019 and she was selected for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Archery World Cup Stage 3: India’s  Deepika Kumari completes hat-trick of gold medals in Paris

  • On June 27, 2021, India’s Deepika Kumari completed a hat-trick of gold medals at the Archery World Cup Stage 3 in Paris.
  • Deepika Kumari beat Elena Osipova of Russia 6-0 in the final.
  • It is her third gold medal at the tournament.
  • Deepika has also won the top prize in the mixed team and women’s individual recurve events.
  • In the mixed recurve team event, husband-wife duo Atanu Das and Deepika Kumari bagged Gold with 5-3 win over the Netherlands.
  • This was their second successive gold medal in the World Cup this year, and sixth overall (Shanghai-2011, Medellin-2013, Wroclaw-2013, Wroclaw-2014, Guatemala City-2021).

  • Deepika became the second Indian to win the title after Palton Hansda won the junior compound competition at the 2006 Archery World Cup in Mérida, Mexico.
  • In 2009, She won the 11th Youth World Archery Championship held in Ogden, Utah, United States.
  • She won a gold medal in the 2010 Commonwealth games in the women’s individual recurve event.
  • In May 2012, Deepika Kumari won her first World Cup individual stage recurve gold medal at Antalya, Turkey.

  • She was conferred the Arjuna Award, India’s second highest sporting award, in the year 2012 by President of India Pranab Mukherjee.
  • In February 2014, she was honored with FICCI Sportsperson of the Year Award.
  • She also received the fourth-highest civilian award in the Republic of India, Padma shri in the year of 2016.

Malayalam Filmmaker & Cinematographer Sivan passes away           

  • On June 24, 2021, Veteran Malayalam Filmmaker & Cinematographer Sivan passed away.
  • He was 89.

About Sivan :

  • Sivan was the first government press photographer in Travancore and Thiru-Kochi.
  • Some of his popular films are Abhayam, Yagam, Oru Yathra, Keshu, Kochu Kochu Mohangal and Kilivathil.
  • He was the first professional photographer and founder of Sivan Studio in Trivandrum in 1959.
  • Sivan Studios was very popular and a known hub for cultural affairs, It was a hub for cultural artistes in the state.

Achievements :

  • Sivan won the national film award three times.
  • Sivan was the still photographer of national award winning Malayalam film Chemmeen.
