28 January: Data Protection Day:

  • On 28 January 2022, the 16th edition of Data Protection Day will be celebrated globally.
  • It aims at raising awareness on the right to data protection.
  • Data Protection Day is now celebrated globally and is called the “Privacy Day” outside Europe.
  • In 2006, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe decided to launch a Data Protection Day, to be celebrated each year on 28 January.
  • The Council of Europe, initiator of this important celebration, continues to play a leading role by encouraging and showcasing initiatives held on this occasion.
  • Celebrated yearly at the same date, Data Protection Day marks the anniversary of the opening for signature of Convention 108, the global data protection Convention. Last year, we celebrated the 40th Anniversary of Convention 108.
  • For over 40 years, Convention 108 has influenced and shaped the protection of privacy and of data protection in Europe and beyond.

Google to invest up to $1 billion in a partnership with Airtel:

  • Google to invest up to $1 billion in a partnership with Airtel as part of its Google for India Digitization Fund
  • Deal includes investment of $700M to acquire 1.28%* ownership in Airtel and up to $300M toward potential multi-year commercial agreements
  • The partnership will focus on enabling affordable access to smartphones across price ranges, and will continue to explore building on their existing partnerships to potentially co-create India-specific network domain use cases for 5G and other standards, and help accelerate the cloud ecosystem for businesses across India
  • As a part of its first commercial agreement, Airtel and Google will work together to build on Airtel’s extensive offerings that covers a range of Android-enabled devices to consumers via innovative affordability programs.
  • Together, the companies will continue to explore further opportunities to bring down the barriers of owning a smartphone across a range of price points, in partnership with various device manufacturers.

India-ASEAN Digital Work Plan 2022 approved at 2nd ASEAN Digital Ministers (ADGMIN) meeting:

  • The 2nd ASEAN Digital Ministers (ADGMIN) meeting with India held on a virtual platform. H.E. Shri Devusinh Chauhan, Minister of State for Communications (MoSC) and H.E. Admiral Tin Aung San, Ministry of Transport and Communications, Myanmar co-chaired the meeting.
  • The ADGMIN is an annual meeting of Telecom Ministers of 10 ASEAN (Association of South-East Asian Nations) countries -Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam and dialogue partner countries – Australia, Canada, China, EU, India, Japan, Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Russia, UK and US.
  • The meeting discussed and deliberated various matters relevant to strengthening regional digital cooperation in the spirit of digital inclusion and integration.

India-Israel agree to further enhance cooperation in the agricultural sector:

  • Israeli Ambassador to India Shri Naor Gilon called on the Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Shri Narendra Singh Tomar at Krishi Bhawan on 27th January 2022.
  • The Ambassador of Israel to India. Shri Tomar, completion of 30 years of diplomatic relations between India and Israel.
  • Union Minister Shri Tomar informed that it has been decided to convert 150 villages around the Centers of Excellence into Villages of Excellence with technical assistance from Israel, out of which 75 villages are being taken up in the first year to commemorate the 75th year of India’s independence where India and Israel will work together.
  • Shri Tomar also highlighted the various schemes that have been launched by the Government of India under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi for the welfare of farmers, including PM-Kisan, Agri-Infrastructure Fund, formation of 10 thousand FPOs, Schemes for promotion of organic farming, natural farming and soil health cards etc.

World’s – largest canal lock unveiled in Netherlands:

  • The world’s largest canal lock was inaugurated by Dutch King Willen-Alexander on January 26, 2022 at Ijmuiden The Netherlands.
  • World’s-largest canal lock Ijmuiden is 500-meter (1,640-feet) long and 70-meter wide.
  • $338 million amount has been spent on the construction on this project.
  • The Ijmuiden lock was designed to allow large, modern cargo ships to reach the port of Amsterdam.
  • The structure is also deep enough that ships will no longer have to wait for a favorable water level to enter the canal.
  • With almost nine meters above the sea leave, the structure is also a defense against the threat of flooding.

Gurgaon gets India’s largest EV charging station:

  • NHEV (National Highway for Electric Vehicle) has inaugurated India’s largest electric vehicle (EV) charging station in Gurgaon, Haryana.
  • This charging station has been installed and operated by
  • This smart EV charging station gets 100 charging points for four-wheelers, out of which 72 units are AC slow chargers while 24 units consist of DC fast chargers.
  • It is situated in Sector 52 of Gurgaon.
  • Prior to this, the country’s largest EV charging station was located in Navi Mumbai that houses 16 AC and 4 DC chargers.

India’s first graphene innovation centre to come up in Kerala:

  • India’s first innovation centre for graphene will be set up in Kerala by the Digital University Kerala (DUK), along with Centre for Materials for Electronics Technology (C-MET) in Thrissur, for Rs 86.41 crore.
  • This will be the first graphene Research and Development (R&D) incubation centre in the country.
  • Tata Steel Limited is set to be the industrial partner of the centre.
  • The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India, has given approval for the project.
  • The project, which will be implemented with the support of the Kerala government, is expected to accelerate the state’s growth in the knowledge industry sector.

India pays $29.9 million in UN regular budget assessments for 2022:

  • India has paid USD 29.9 million in UN regular budget assessments for the year 2022.
  • India joins the 2022 Honour Roll of 24 Member States out of 193 that have paid their @UN Regular Budget Assessments in full, India’s Permanent Mission to the UN.
  • As of January 21, 2022, 24 Member States have paid their regular budget assessments in full.
  • India is currently a non-permanent member of the 15-nation Security Council and its two-year term will end on December 31, 2022.

SBI withdraws controversial circular on recruitment of pregnant women candidates:

  • State Bank of India, the country’s largest commercial bank, withdrew the controversial circular that barred women candidates who are over three months pregnant from taking up jobs in the bank.
  • In view of the public sentiments, SBI has decided to keep the revised instructions regarding recruitment of pregnant women candidates in abeyance and continue with the existing instruction in the matter.
  • SBI has always been proactive towards the care and empowerment of its women employees who now constitute around 25 per cent of its workforce.

IREDA and Goa Shipyard Ltd signs MoU for Rooftop Solar Power Projects:

  • Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency Ltd. (IREDA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) to provide its techno-financial expertise to set-up a rooftop solar power project.
  • The two companies are PSUs under the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy and the Ministry of Defence, respectively.
  • The MoU was signed by Pradip Kumar Das, Chairman & Managing Director (CMD), IREDA and Bharat Bhushan Nagpal, CMD, GSL in the presence of senior officials.
  • Under the MoU, IREDA will assist GSL to set-up a rooftop solar power project at the headquarter of the company situated in Vasco da Gama, Goa.
  • IREDA will also extend its techno-commercial expertise to GSL for Environmental & Social (E&S) due diligence of rooftop solar and other RE projects as per the internationally accepted E&S standards.

Govt appoints V Anantha Nageswaran as new Chief Economic Adviser

  • On Jan 28, 2022, The Government of India appointed Dr V Anantha Nageswaran as the new Chief Economic Adviser.
  • He replaced Krishnamurthy Subramanian, who returned to academia in December after a three-year tenure as CEA.
  • The search panel for the selection of CEA is headed by 15th Finance Commission chief NK Singh.
  • The CEA is the ex-officio cadre controlling authority of the Indian Economic Service.
  • Also, the economic survey is prepared under the guidance of the Chief Economic Adviser.

About Dr V Anantha Nageswaran :

  • V Anantha Nageswaran is a former member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council (PMEAC).
  • Nageswaran graduated with a post-graduate diploma in Management (MBA) from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad in 1985.
  • Later he obtained a doctoral degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1994 for his work on the empirical behaviour of exchange rates.
  • Dr Nageswaran, who is a noted writer, author, teacher, and economic consultant, has taught at several business schools and institutes of management across India and abroad.
  • Before his appointment as the Chief Economic Adviser, he was Dean at IFMR Graduate School of Business at Krea University from October 2018 to December 2019.
  • Additionally, he was a part-time member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India from 2019 to 2021.
  • Between 1994 and 2004, he worked for the Union Bank of Switzerland (now UBS) and Credit Suisse in Switzerland and Singapore.

IIFL Finance Limited Appoints Arun Kumar Purwar as Chairman of the Board       

  • Fairfax and Capital Group-backed non-banking finance company IIFL Finance appointed former State Bank of India boss Arun Purwar as chairman of its board effective from April 1.

About Arun Kumar Purwar :

  • Purwar is a veteran banker and was Chairman of the country’s largest bank – State Bank of India from November 2002 to May 2006.
  • He also chairs the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) Diaspora Division.
  • He was credited with the core banking initiative and stepping up the bank’s focus on the retail segment.
  • He played an important role in starting SBI’s life insurance company- SBI Life Insurance Company.
  • Purwar is currently associated with Tadas Wind Energy Pvt and Eroute Technologies.

19-year-old woman Zara Rutherford becomes youngest woman to fly solo around the world

  • The 19-year-old Belgian-British pilot Zara Rutherford set a world record as the youngest woman to fly solo around the world.
  • Zara Rutherford, who has set a new Guinness World record as the youngest woman to fly solo around the world, touching down in western Belgium 155 days after beginning.
  • She visited 41 countries and stopped in five continents throughout her 52,000-kilometer 28,100 nautical mile) journey.
  • Rutherford now holds the title for the first woman to circumnavigate the world in a microlight aircraft.
  • She is also the first Belgian to fly around the world alone.
  • She has set the Guinness World Records book by breaking the records established by Shaesta Waiz, a 30-year-old American aviator, since 2017.

Navy inducts two indigenously built Advanced Light Helicopters ALH-DHRUV MK III in Port Blair

  • On Jan 28, 2022, The two indigenously made Advance Light Helicopters ALH-DHRUV MK III inducted in the fleet of Andaman Nicobar Command in Port Blair.
  • The induction ceremony was held at INS Utkrosh, in presence of Commander-in-Chief, Andaman Nicobar Command, Lt. Gen. Ajai Singh as chief guest.
  • The MK III helicopter is manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and represents a tremendous leap towards self-reliance in the field of military aircraft, in line with the government’s push towards ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
  • The induction is a boost to the security of Andaman and Nicobar and a symbol of the country’s resolve of being self-reliant in its security and maintaining peace in the region.
  • The aircraft has a glass cockpit, Shakti engines, advanced Maritime Patrol Radar, Electro–optical payload and Night Vision Device.
  • The helicopters will act as a force multiplier for far-flung islands of the east in Andaman and Nicobar Command and strengthen its operational capabilities.
  • It will be utilized in carrying out search and rescue operations, air ambulance, maritime reconnaissance, and logistics support in these remote and geographically scattered islands.
  • Till date, the HAL manufactures ALH MK III aircraft and has delivered over 300 of them to the Armed Forces.
  • Additionally, the HAL is in the process of manufacturing four light utility helicopters (LUHs) under limited series production by 2022-23 and eight more by 2023-24.

Om Birla launches ‘Digital Sansad App’

  • On Jan 27, 2022, The Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla launched the official mobile application of the Parliament named Digital Sansad App.

About the App :

  • Through the Digital Sansad App, citizens will be able to watch the Parliamentary proceedings activities in the Parliament as well as the initiatives taken by the temple of democracy at the click of a button on the phone.
  • This will also allow citizens to check what their members of Parliament are doing, what debates they are participating in and what they are saying.
  • It will also contain members’ speeches and participation in all proceedings including budget sessions etcetera from 1947 onwards.
  • The archive will be from the 12th to the 17th Lok Sabha session.
  • The Digital Sansad App, citizens will now be able to watch House proceedings, including the Union Budget 2022 live.
  • Using the app, parliamentarians can also digitally log their attendance.

Odisha Open 2022 to kick off at Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Cuttack

  • The 2022 Odisha Open, a Badminton World Federation (BWF) event, will kick off at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Cuttack from January 25.
  • The Super 100 tournament which is the third event of the 2022 BWF World Tour calendar will continue till January 30.
  • It is the first edition of the Odisha Open.
  • The tournament is organized by the Badminton Association of India with sanctions from the Badminton World Federation.
  • As many as 300 players from 18 countries will take part in the tournament including five players from Odisha who will be managed by 200 officials.
  • Notably, Saina Nehwal and her husband Parupalli Kashyap will be the top seeds in the women’s and men’s singles, respectively, at the inaugural Odisha Open 2022 badminton tournament.

Fit India Quiz preliminary round result declared; UP students top first round

  • The results of the Preliminary Round of the first-ever Fit India Quiz, India’s biggest sports and fitness quiz for students, was announced.
  • Results of the nation-wide competition organized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has revealed that two students from Uttar Pradesh have outperformed students from all other states to become the top scorers of the Preliminary Round.

Aim of the Quiz :

  • To create awareness among students about India’s rich sporting history and to also tell them more about India’s centuries-old indigenous sports and our national and regional sporting heroes.
  • While Divyanshu Chamoli of Delhi Public School, Greater Noida won the top spot, he was closely followed by Shashwat Mishra of Sunbeam School, Lahartara, Varanasi.
  • The Preliminary round of the quiz was conducted by the National Testing Agency, the same institution that conducts the IIT and JEE entrance exams.
  • Top scorers of the Preliminary round will move into the state round and compete to become their respective state champions.
  • The preliminary round of the Fit India Quiz, saw participants from 13,502 schools from more than 659 districts across the country, out of which students of 361 schools across 36 States and Union Territories have now been shortlisted for the State Rounds.
  • The Quiz has a prize money of 3.25 crores which will be given out to winning schools and students at various phases of the quiz.

India’s first Para-Badminton Academy inaugurated in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh

  • Dronacharya Awardee and Head National Coach of the Indian Para-badminton team, Gaurav Khanna, formally announced his association with Ageas Federal Life Insurance to launch the country’s first Para-Badminton Academy in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.
  • The state-of-the-art, high-performance centre with advanced equipment and facilities in Lucknow aims to improve India’s medal chances at the 2024 Paralympics to be held in Paris, France at Stade de France stadium.
  • Gaurav Khanna, a Dronacharya Awardee, also unveiled the Ageas Federal ‘Quest for Fearless Shuttlers’ programme at the closed-door launch ceremony to spot and nurture new talent for the 2028 and 2032 Paralympics.
  • The high-performance centre consists of four courts, two with BWF-approved Synthetic Mats for Standing Athletes and two Wooden Courts for Wheelchair Athletes.

UNION GOVERNMENT SCHEME

PM Jan dhan Yojana

Launched in:

Jan dhan Yojana announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 15 August 2014 and the scheme was launched on 28 August 2014.

The scheme is under administrative control of ministry of finance.

Finance minister of india – Nirmala Sitharaman.

Minister of state in finance ministry – Bhagawat Karad , Pankaj Choudhary.

Objective:

Objective of “Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana (PMJDY)” is ensuring access to various financial services like availability of basic savings bank account, access to need based credit, remittances facility, insurance and pension to the excluded sections i.e. weaker sections & low income groups.

This deep penetration at affordable cost is possible only with effective use of technology.

Benefits under PMJDY

One basic savings bank account is opened for unbanked person.

There is no requirement to maintain any minimum balance in PMJDY accounts.

Interest is earned on the deposit in PMJDY accounts.

Rupay Debit card is provided to PMJDY account holder.

Accident Insurance Cover of Rs.1 lakh (enhanced to Rs. 2 lakh to new PMJDY accounts opened after 28.8.2018) is available with RuPay card issued to the PMJDY account holders.

An overdraft (OD) facility up to Rs. 10,000 to eligible account holders is available.

PMJDY accounts are eligible for Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY), Atal Pension Yojana (APY), Micro Units Development & Refinance Agency Bank (MUDRA) scheme.

What is a scheme:

PMJDY is a National Mission on Financial Inclusion encompassing an integrated approach to bring about comprehensive financial inclusion of all the households in the country.

The plan envisages universal access to banking facilities with at least one basic banking account for every household, financial literacy, access to credit, insurance and pension facility.

In addition, the beneficiaries would get RuPay Debit card having inbuilt accident insurance cover of र 1 lakh.

The plan also envisages channeling all Government benefits (from Centre / State / Local Body) to the beneficiaries accounts and pushing the Direct Benefits Transfer (DBT) scheme of the Union Government.

The technological issues like poor connectivity, on-line transactions will be addressed. Mobile transactions through telecom operators and their established centres as Cash Out Points are also planned to be used for Financial Inclusion under the Scheme.

Also an effort is being made to reach out to the youth of this country to participate in this Mission Mode Programme.

Mission Mode Objectives (6 Pillars):

PMJDY to be executed in the Mission Mode, envisages provision of affordable financial services to all citizens within a reasonable distance. It comprises of the following six pillars:-

Universal access to banking facilities:

Mapping of each district into Sub Service Area (SSA) catering to 1000-1500 households in a manner that every habitation has access to banking services within a th reasonable distance say 5 km by 14 August, 2015. Coverage of parts of J&K, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, North East and the Left Wing Extremism affected districts which have telecom connectivity and infrastructure constraints would spill over to th the Phase II of the program (15 August, th 2015 to 15 August, 2018)

Providing Basic Banking Accounts with overdraft facility and RuPay Debit card to all households:

The effort would be to first cover all uncovered households with banking facilities by August, 2015, by opening basic bank accounts. Account holder would be provided a RuPay Debit Card. Facility of an overdraft to every basic banking account holder would be considered after satisfactory operation / credit history of six months.

Financial Literacy Programme:

Financial literacy would be an integral part of the Mission in order to let the beneficiaries make best use of the financial services being made available to them.

Creation of Credit Guarantee Fund:

Creation of a Credit Guarantee Fund would be to cover the defaults in overdraft accounts.

Micro- Insurance

To p r o v i d e micro- insurance to all willing and eligible th persons by 14 August, 2018, and then on an ongoing basis.

The total number of beneficiaries under the Centre’s financial inclusion scheme, Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), has crossed the 44 crore mark.

The total number of accounts opened under PMJDY stood at 44.05 crores, with a total balance of ₹1,47,812 crore as on December 8.
