National Civil Services Day- 21 April:

  • Every year on April 21, the Government of India commemorates ‘Civil Services Day’ as an opportunity for city officials to recommit themselves to the cause of citizens and renew their vows to public service and work excellence.
  • This day was chosen to remember the day in 1947 when Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the first Home Minister of Independent India, addressed the probationers of Administrative Services Officers at Metcalf House in Delhi, referring to public workers as the “steel frame of India.”
  • The first such event took place on April 21, 2006, at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi.

World Creativity and Innovation Day- 21st April:

  • The UN-designated 21 April to be celebrated World Creativity and Innovation Day in order to raise awareness about the crucial role of creativity and innovation in different aspects of human development.
  • The global body is of the belief that there is no universal understanding of creativity.
  • World Creativity and Innovation Day (WCID) was founded on 25 May 2001 in Toronto, Canada.
  • The founder of the day was the Canadian Marci Segal.
  • Segal was studying creativity in 1977 at the International Center for Studies in Creativity.
  • The United Nations on 27 April 2017 resolved to include World Creativity and Innovation Day on 21 April as a Day of observance to raise importance among people about the use of their creativity in problem-solving for all issues that may be related to achieving the 2015 Sustainable Development Goals.

PM Modi inaugurates development projects worth Rs 22,000 crore in Dahod, Gujarat:

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has laid the foundation stone and inaugurated the various development projects worth 22,000 crore rupees at a special function organised at Dahod in Gujarat.
  • This includes the manufacturing project of 9,000 HP Electric Locomotives at the Railway Production Unit in Dahod.
  • The project will be completed at the cost of around 20,000 crore rupees.
  • Dahod workshop- established in 1926 for the periodic overhaul of steam locomotives will be upgraded to an electric locomotive manufacturing unit with infrastructural improvements.
  • It will provide direct and indirect employment to over 10,000 people.

India’s first pure green hydrogen plant commissioned in Assam:

  • Oil India Limited (OIL) has taken the first significant step towards the Green Hydrogen Economy in India by commissioning India’s First 99.999% pure Green Hydrogen pilot plant, with an installed capacity of 10 kg per day at its Jorhat Pump Station in
  • The plant was commissioned in a record time of 3 months.
  • Shri Sushil Chandra Mishra, Chairman & Managing Director, inaugurated the plant in the presence of Shri Harish Madhav, Director (Finance) and Shri Prasanta Borkakoty, Resident Chief Executive of the company.
  • The plant produces Green Hydrogen from the electricity generated by the existing 500kW Solar plant using a 100 kW Anion Exchange Membrane (AEM) Electrolyser array.
  • The use of AEM technology is being used for the first time in India.

Mobile app for 2nd Khelo India University Games launched:

  • The second edition of the Khelo India University Games to be held in the tech capital of Bengaluru will have its own mobile app.
  • This app launched is a single point reference for all the information on the University games to be inaugurated by Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu on 24th April.
  • The app will provide information on accommodation, food, transport service and timings, emergency contact numbers, and maps to reach the stadiums among other things.
  • It will also carry updates on event schedules, results and medal tally.
  • The app can be downloaded from the play store for free.
  • Post-Covid third wave, this will be India’s first largest sporting event with the participation of over 4500 sportspersons from 189 Universities in 20 disciplines.
  • The event will be held till May 3rd.

Vice President Venkaiah Naidu to inaugurate Khelo India University Games in Bengaluru on 24th April:

  • The Khelo India University Games set to be inaugurated by Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu in Bengaluru on April 24 will see the participation of Olympians.
  • According to the Sports Authority of India, Tokyo Olympians Srihari Nataraj representing Swimming, Manu Bhaker in Shooting, and Dutee Chand in Athletics will be competing in the Games.
  • During the second edition of the games, two new disciplines namely Yogasana and Mallakhamb are added for the first time.
  • There are 3871 athletes from 189 Universities across the country to compete in 20 disciplines for 275 Gold medals.
  • The logo of the Games features the iconic Vidhana Soudha building with two elephants on either side.
  • The mascot of the Games is Veera, the mighty strong wise elephant accompanied by Jaya, a blackbuck, and Vijay, a Tiger.
  • The Khelo India Jersey depicts an athlete in action.

Telangana To Get World’s Largest Electric 3-Wheeler Factory

  • Telangana will get its three-wheeler factory soon as California-based Biliti Electric Inc (Biliti) intends to set up the world’s largest factory in the state with a production capacity of 240,000 electric vehicles each year.
  • There will be two phases in which the facility will be built.
  • Phase I will be developed over 5 acres with the capability to produce 18,000 vehicles per year and is expected to be operational in early 2023.
  • Phase 2, the larger facility spread across 200 acres will be operational in 2024 .
  • The plants will produce all of Biliti’s products including the cargo model Taskman and the passenger version Urban to serve customers in the global markets.
  • The new plant is estimated to drive private investment of $150 million and expected to create 3,000 jobs in the State.
  • Biliti currently operates through an exclusive manufacturing partnership with Hyderabad-based Gayam Motor Works (GMW) for manufacturing its three-wheelers.

World Bank slashes global growth forecast to 3.2% for 2022 from 4.1%

  • The World Bank lowered its annual global growth forecast for 2022 to 3.2% due to the impacts from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on the world economy.
  • Earlier this was estimated at 4.1%.
  • Other factors behind the slowdown in growth from January’s forecast include higher food and fuel costs being borne by consumers in developed economies across the world.

IMF cuts India’s FY23 GDP forecast to 8.2% from 9%

  • The International Monetary Fund (IMF), in its latest World Economic Outlook report, slashed the gross domestic product (GDP) growth forecast for India in FY23 to 8.2 percent.
  • Earlier in the January 2022 report, this was estimated at 9 percent.
  • This was one of the steepest cuts for emerging economies compared to the IMF’s January WEO forecasts.
  • It also expected India’s FY23 current account deficit to be 3.1 per cent, compared with 1.5 per cent expected for FY22.
  • There was also a cut in India’s FY24 GDP growth forecast to 6.9 per cent from 7.1 per cent estimated in the IMF’s January 2022 report.
  • The IMF’s projection of India’s retail inflation is now at 6.1 per cent, higher than the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI’s) forecast of 5.7 per cent.
  • IMF cut its global growth outlook for calendar year 2022 to 3.6 percent from 4.4 percent.

Russian Central Bank Registers New Payment System HELLO

  • The Central Bank of Russia (CBR) has registered a new payment system called HELLO to the national register of credit institutions.
  • The system’s payment infrastructure services will be operated by the Russian commercial bank TransKapitalBank.
  • The HELLO payment system is a collection of payment services and institutions that makes money transfers easier.

Patrick Achi re appointed as PM of Cote d’Ivoire

  • Cote d’Ivoire’s Président Alassane Ouattara has re appointed Patrick Achi as new Prime Minister of Cote d’Ivoire.
  • He presented his resignation on April 13 in Abidjan  and that of his government following the will of Alassane Ouattara to carry out a reorganization of the government team.

About Patrick Achi :

  • Patrick Achi is an Ivorian politician who served as Prime Minister of Ivory Coast from 8 March 2021 to 13 April 2022 following the death of his predecessor Hamed Bakayoko.
  • He was the third prime minister in the West African state in the last three years after Amadou Gon Coulibaly and Hamed Bakayoko.

Senior IAS officer Naresh Kumar appointed Delhi chief secretary, Vijay Dev to head State Election Commission

  • According to an order issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Senior IAS officer Naresh Kumar has been appointed as the new Chief Secretary of Delhi.
  • He will take charge on April 21, 2022.
  • Kumar will replace incumbent Vijay Dev, who will retire voluntarily on April 20, 2022.
  • Dev will take over the charge of the State Election Commission (SEC) for Delhi and Chandigarh from April 21, 2022.

  • Rajiv Verma, IAS of 1992 batch has also been appointed as the Chief Secretary of the Union Territory of Puducherry.
  • The MHA also transferred Dharmendra, IAS (AGMUT-1989) as the next Chief Secretary of Arunachal Pradesh & at present, Dharmendra is Chairman of the NDMC.

  • Kumar, a 1987 batch AGMUT cadre IAS officer.
  • He is currently serving as the chief secretary of Arunachal Pradesh.

6th Scorpene submarine of Project-75 INS Vagsheer launched in Mumbai, Maharashtra

  • Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) has launched INS ‘Vagsheer’- the sixth and the last Scorpene Submarine of Project-75 launched in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
  • Defence Secretary Ajay Kumar, who was the Chief Guest on the occasion.
  • These submarines are being constructed at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) Mumbai, under collaboration with M/s Naval Group, France.
  • INS Vagsheer is named after the Sand Fish– a deadly deep-sea predator of the Indian Ocean.
  • Scorpene submarines are capable of undertaking multifarious types of missions i.e anti-Surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, mine laying, area surveillance etc.
  • The project gives a major boost to India’s defence manufaturing sector to create indigenous design and construction capability of submarines in the country.

  • Project–75 includes construction of six submarines of Scorpene design which are to be built for the Indian Navy.
  • First submarine : INS Kalvari- commissioned on 14 December 2017.
  • Second : INS Khanderi – September 2019

India’s Harpreet Singh and Sachin Sahrawat bag bronze medals in Mongolia:

  • In Wrestling, Harpreet Singh and Sachin Sahrawat bagged a bronze each as Indian Greco-Roman wrestlers concluded their campaign at the Asian Wrestling Championships 2022 with five medals, in Ulaanbaatar Mongolia.
  • Harpreet defeated Korea’s Sejin Yang 4-2 in the quarter-final before going down to Iran’s Rasoul Sadegh Garmsiri in the semis by fall in the 82 kg weight category.
  • In the bronze medal match, Harpreet was declared the winner after Jafar Khan from Qatar suffered an injury.
  • However, the remaining four Greco-Roman wrestlers Gyanender, Sachin Sahrawat, Vikas, and Ravi lost in the quarter-finals.
  • Indian women’s freestyle wrestlers will begin their campaign at the Championships.
  • On the other hand, Indian men’s freestyle wrestlers, including Tokyo Olympic medallists Ravi Kumar Dahiya and Bajrang Punia, will take the mat.

West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard announces retirement from international cricket:

  • West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard has announced his retirement from international cricket.
  • Pollard, who was the captain of West Indies’ limited-overs teams, played a total of 123 ODIs and 101 T20Is.
  • He has been an integral part of the Mumbai Indians team in the Indian Premier League for several years now and was retained by the franchise ahead of the mega auction in February this year.
  • He was part of the West Indies team that won the 2012 ICC WT20 and missed out on his second T20 World Cup title in 2016 as he missed the tournament due to injury.
