The Central Advisory Board on Archaeology was re-established by the government:

  • The Central Advisory Board on Archaeology (CABA), which was constituted seven years ago to strengthen relations between the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and those involved in archaeological research, has been re-established.
  • The ASI recreated the board, with the culture minister serving as chairwoman and members including Culture Ministry and ASI officials, MPs, State government nominations, university representatives, scientists, and Indus Valley script experts.

Key points:

  • It was reconstituted for a three-year term to promote closer contact between the Archaeological Survey of India and Indian universities conducting archaeological research, as well as other institutions conducting studies related to the application of archaeological principles, and to provide for a closer association of learned societies in India with the ASI’s activities.
  • Former ASI Director-Generals will also serve on the board, as will five individuals who have been selected by the Government of India in their capacity.

Bharat Drone Mahotsav 2022: PM has inaugurated India’s biggest drone festival:

  • Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi launched India’s largest drone festival here, while he visited with Kisan drone pilots and saw open-air drone demos.
  • The ‘Bharat Drone Mahotsav 2022’ will be a two-day event on May 27 and 28.
  • The prime minister will meet with Kisan drone pilots, observe open-air drone demos, and meet with startups at the drone exhibition centre.

About the Bharat Drone Mahotsav 2022:

  • More than 1600 delegates, including government officials, military forces, central armed police forces, Public Sector Units (PSUs), foreign embassies, commercial corporations, and drone startups, will attend the Bharat Drone Mahotsav 2022.
  • Around 70 exhibitors will display diverse drone use cases at the Drone Festival.
  • The Bharat Drone Mahotsav 2022 will include a virtual awarding of drone pilot certifications, panel talks, product launches, a display of a ‘Made in India’ Drone Taxi prototype, and flying demonstrations, among other things.

India to introduce made in India TB infection skin test called “c-TB”:

  • According to Health Minister Shri Mansukh Mandaviya, India will introduce a newly approved “made in India” TB infection skin test dubbed “c-TB”.
  • This low-cost tool will be extremely beneficial to other high-burden countries as well.
  • This year, a new effort called “Adopt people with TB” will be launched, which will call on corporates, industries, organisations, political parties, and individuals to come forward and adopt TB-infected people and families, providing nutritional and social support.

  • Among these include ‘bidirectional testing’ of tuberculosis with Covid, house-to-house TB detection campaigns, scaling up of rapid molecular diagnostics at sub-district levels, the use of artificial intelligence and digital tools, the ‘Jan Andolan,’ and, most critically, the decentralisation of TB services to Ayushman Bharat Health and Wellness Centres as part of comprehensive primary healthcare.

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi chaired the 40th PRAGATI Interaction:

  • Shri Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, has asked infrastructure agencies to coordinate their initiatives with the water bodies being built as part of the Amrit Sarovar project.
  • Mr Modi added that this would be a win-win situation because the material required for the Amrit Sarovar could be utilised for public works by the agencies.
  • The Prime Minister presided over the 40th edition of PRAGATI, a multi-modal ICT-based platform for Pro-Active Governance and Timely Implementation that brings together the Centre and State governments.

About The Interactions:

  • Nine agenda items were reviewed during the meeting, including eight projects and one programme.
  • The overall cost of these eight projects across 14 states is estimated to be roughly 59,900 million rupees.
  • Among the states engaged are Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Sikkim.
  • During the meeting, Prime Minister Modi also highlighted the ‘National Broadband Mission’ programme.
  • States and agencies were urged to use the centralised Gati Shakti Sanchar Portal to expedite the processing of Right of Way (RoW) applications.
  • According to the Prime Minister, states may also develop state-level GatiShakti Master Plans based on the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan and establish state-level organisations for this purpose.

4th edition of Shirui Lily Festival 2022 begins in Manipur

  • The 4th Edition of State-Level Shirui Lily Festival 2022 began at Shirui Village Ground in Ukhrul district, Manipur from May 25 to May 28, 2022.

Aim :

  • To create and raise awareness on Shirui Lily flower.
  • The annual festival is organized by the Department of Tourism, Government of Manipur.
  • It is the four-day long festival inaugurated by the Governor of Manipur La. Ganesan and the Chief Minister N. Biren Singh.
  • Different events including traditional dances, songs and music, trekking, beauty contests, indigenous games and sports will be organized at different sites in the Ukhrul district.

India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) introduces Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AEPS) issuer charges

  • India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) has introduced issuer charges for the Aadhaar Enabled Payment System service (AePS).
  • AePS Issuer transaction charges will be in effect from June 15, 2022.
  • AePS allows you to do six types of transactions.

About AePS :

  • AEPS is a bank led model which allows online interoperable financial inclusion transactions at PoS (MicroATM) through the Business correspondent of any bank using the Aadhaar authentication.
  • It is a payment service that allows a bank customer to use Aadhaar as his/her identity to access his/her Aadhaar enabled bank account and perform basic banking transactions like balance enquiry, cash withdrawal, remittances through a Business Correspondent.

IPPB AePS service charges :

  • The first three AePS issuer transactions each month, such as cash withdrawal, cash deposit, and mini statement, will be free of charge.
  • Over the free transaction limit, AePS issuer cash withdrawals and cash deposits will be charged at 20 plus GST per transaction, and mini statement transactions will be charged at 5 plus GST per transaction
  • To make use of AEPS, one requires a bank name, Aadhaar Number and Fingerprint captured during enrollment & transaction is completed using his/her biometric authentication only.

Services provided by AePS :

  • Banking Services such as Cash Deposit, Cash Withdrawal, Balance Enquiry, Mini Statement, Aadhaar to Aadhaar Fund Transfer, Authentication, BHIM Aadhaar Pay

  • Recently, IPPB signed a sub membership agreement with the Department of Post to facilitate NEFT/RTGS transactions for their customers with eligible accounts.
  • To facilitate such inward/outward transactions, to and from DoP Customer accounts, a dedicated IFS code IPOS0000DOP has been created which will be exclusively used only for transactions in DoP Customer accounts.

Japan’s MUFG Bank gets approval to set up branch at GIFT City

  • MUFG Bank will be the first Japanese bank to open a branch at Gujarat International Financial Tech City (GIFT City) in Ahmedabad for foreign currency-denominated lending business.
  • This will be its 6th branch in India.

Purpose :

  • To offer a wide range of banking services to both domestic and global clients.
  • MUFG Bank has obtained necessary approvals from the International Financial Services Center Authority in India and the Financial Services Agency in Japan, to open a branch at GIFT City.
  • It plans to open this branch for operations by the first half of FY 2022.
  • MUFG had opened its first branch in Mumbai in 1953.
  • At present it has presence in Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai and Neemrana.

BRICS’s New Development Bank (NDB) to Set up India’s Regional Office in GIFT City

  • The New Development Bank (NDB), the Shanghai-based multilateral bank of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa), Development Bank would set up a regional office in India at the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City), Gujarat, India to cater to infrastructure and sustainable development needs.
  • NDB Headquarters working in close coordination with the Indian Regional Office, will focus on project origination including initial project preparation and technical assistance, pipeline development, project implementation and monitoring as well as regional portfolio management.

  • HDFC Securities has launched HDFC Money, a robo-advisory investment platform for all mutual fund investments.

About HDFC Money :

  • HDFC Money is a 100 percent digital platform that doesn’t involve opening or having a Demat Account.
  • It mainly focuses on mutual funds investment, offers a range of options for investors depending on their preference and risk tolerance.
  • Also it will allow users to manage various aspects of finances including accessing, managing, and tracking portfolios, insurance planning, starting goal planning, creating e-Wills, and managing or filing taxes.
  • HDFC Money will allow investors to “plan and execute with a more defined objective keeping risk and tenure in consideration”.

Moody’s lowers India’s economic growth forecast to 8.8% for 2022

  • Moody’s Investors Service, often referred to as Moody’s, lowered India’s economic growth projection to 8.8 percent for 2022 from 9.1 percent earlier.
  • It cites the rise in crude oil, food and fertilizer prices that will weigh on household finances and spending even as interest rate hikes to curb inflation will slow the demand recovery’s momentum.
  • For 2022 and 2023, it projected inflation to be around 6.8 percent and 5.2 percent, respectively.
  • Growth hopes for G-20 nations have been pared from 3.6% to 3.1% for 2022, virtually half the 5.9% growth recorded in 2021.
  • Moody’s projected China to grow at 4.5 percent in 2022 & 5.3 percent in 2023.
  • While in the US and UK, GDP growth is expected to be around 2.8 percent each.

Other Projections :

  • S&P Global Ratings had cut India’s growth projection for 2022-23 to 7.3 percent, from 7.8 percent earlier, on rising inflation and longer-than-expected Russia-Ukraine conflict.
  • In March 2022, Fitch had cut India’s growth forecast to 8.5 percent, from 10.3 percent, citing sharply high energy prices on account of the Russia-Ukraine war.
  • In April, 2022, The World Bank slashed India’s GDP forecast for 2022-23 to 8 percent from 8.7 percent predicted earlier.
  • The IMF has cut the projection to 8.2 percent from 9 percent.
  • Asian Development Bank (ADB) has projected India’s growth at 7.5 percent.
  • In March 2022, RBI cut forecast to 7.2 percent, from 7.8 percent, amid volatile crude oil prices and supply chain disruptions due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.

  • Shaik will take this role from Elisa Maria Olmeda de Alejandro from Mexico.

  • Mr Anwar Hussain Shaik is the first Indian representative to chair the committee after 10 years.
  • The Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Agreement aims to ensure that technical regulations, standards and conformity assessment procedures are non-discriminatory and do not create unnecessary obstacles to trade.
  • TBT Committee work involves two broad areas: Review of specific measures and strengthening implementation of the TBT Agreement.
  • WTO members use this committee to discuss specific trade concerns, specific laws, regulations or procedures that affect their trade, usually in response to notifications.

Rolls-Royce India president Jayaraman Receives Order of the British Empire (OBE) Award

  • President of India and South Asia for Rolls-Royce, Kishore Jayaraman, has received an honorary Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by Her Majesty The Queen.
  • He received the award for services to international trade and investment, with a key focus on promotion of India-UK trade.

About Kishore Jayaraman :

  • Kishore was born in 1965 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India.
  • He began his career in 1989 with GE Drive Systems as a Process Models Design Engineer at Salem, Virginia, USA till 2012.
  • In 2012, Kishore was appointed President India and South Asia for Rolls-Royce.
  • Jayaraman is a member of the Board of the UK-India Business Council which supports UK businesses set-up in India.
  • He has also been instrumental in promoting bilateral ties by setting up a strategic ecosystem for boosting manufacturing in India enabled by UK’s technology.

Tomb of Sand becomes 1st Hindi novel to win International Booker Prize

  • Delhi-based author Geetanjali Shree and American translator Daisy Rockwell, won the International Booker Prize for their novel ‘Tomb of Sand’.
  • The 50,000-pound ($63,000) prize money will be split between Shree and Rockwell.
  • Shree’s novel was chosen from a shortlist of six books, the others being:
  1. ‘Cursed Bunny’ by Bora Chung, translated by Anton Hur from Korean
  2. ‘A New Name: Septology VI-VII’ by Jon Fosse, translated by Damion Searls from Norwegian
  3. ‘Heaven’ by Mieko Kawakami, translated by Samuel Bett and David Boyd from Japanese
  4. ‘Elena Knows’ by Claudia Piñeiro, translated by Frances Riddle from Spanish;
  5. ‘The Books of Jacob’ by Olga Tokarczuk, translated by Jennifer Croft from Polish.

About Geetanjali Shree :

  • Geetanjali Shree born in 1957 in UP, and is presently based in Delhi.
  • Shree is the author of three novels and several story collections with her work translated into English, French, German, Serbian, and Korean.
  • Her 2000 novel Mai was shortlisted for the Crossword Book Award in 2001.
  • She is also a recipient of the Indu Sharma Katha Samman Award and has been a fellow of the Ministry of Culture, India and Japan Foundation.

About Tomb of Sand :

  • The book is about a widow who dares to confront her experiences during the 1947 partition into India and Pakistan.
  • Tomb of Sand’ which was originally published in Hindi as Ret Samadhi is translated into English by Daisy Rockwell.
  • The novel is published in Britain by Tilted Axis Press.
  • It was founded by translator Deborah Smith, who won the 2016 International Booker for translating Han Kang’s “The Vegetarian” to publish books from Asia.

3rd edition of Indian Navy – Bangladesh Navy Bilateral EX Bongosagar begins at Mongla port

  • The 3rd edition of Indian Navy and Bangladesh Navy Bilateral exercise Bongosagar 2022 commenced at Port Mongla, Bangladesh.
  • The Harbour Phase of this exercise is scheduled from May 24-25 2022, followed by a Sea Phase in the Northern Bay of Bengal from May 26-27 2022.

Aim :

  • To develop a high degree of interoperability and joint operational skills through the conduct of a wide spectrum of maritime exercises and operations between the two navies.

Participants of the exercise :

  • For Representing Indian Navy, INS Kora, an indigenously built Guided Missile Corvette, and Sumedha, an indigenously built Offshore Patrol Vessel
  • Representing Bangladesh Navy, BNS Abu Ubaidah and Ali Haider, both Guided Missile Frigates are participating in the exercise.
  • The harbour phase of the exercise includes professional and social interactions, and friendly sporting fixtures, in addition to the tactical level planning discussions on the conduct of the exercises at sea.
  • The sea phase of the exercise would facilitate ships from both the navies to participate in intensive surface warfare drills, weapon firing drills, seamanship evolutions and coordinated air operations in a tactical scenario.

India’s upcoming AI-powered wargame center – Project WARDEC

  • The Army Training Command signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Gandhinagar-based Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU) to develop a ‘Wargame Research and Development Centre’(prototype name ‘WARDEC’) in New Delhi.
  • RRU will collaborate with Tech Mahindra to develop the center over the next 3 to 4 months.

About WARDEC :

  • WARDEC, would be a first-of-its-kind simulation-based training centre in India that will use artificial intelligence (AI) to design virtual reality wargames
  • It will be used by the Army to train its soldiers and test their strategies through “metaverse-enabled gameplay”.
  • The wargame models will be designed to prepare for wars as well as counter-terror and counter-insurgency operations.
  • Soldiers will test their skills in the metaverse where their surroundings will be simulated using a combination of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR).
  • Apart from the armed forces, the BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP and SSB can also use the metaverse-enabled simulation exercises for better training.

India beats Indonesia 16-0 in Asia Cup 2022 hockey tournament:

  • In an exciting Pool B match, the Indian men’s team scored six goals in the last quarter to defeat Indonesia 16-0.
  • A game of the Asia Cup 2022 to qualify for the Asia Cup Super-4 stage.
  • India joined Japan, Malaysia, and South Korea in the Asia Cup Super-4
  • To qualify, India needed to win by at least a 15-0 score, and the young team thrived under duress.

About the Match:

  • Both India and Pakistan finished with four points in Pool A, trailing Japan, although the hosts qualified for the Super 4s due to a greater goal difference (1).
  • Earlier in the day, Pakistan had lost 2-3 against Japan.
  • This was India’s first win in the ongoing Asia Cup, following a 1-1 tie with Pakistan and a 2-5 setback at the hands of Japan, who finished first in Pool A.
  • Japan won all three of their pool matches.

IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships: Turkey topped medal tally of 2022:

  • The 12th edition of the 2022 International Boxing Association (IBA) Women’s World Boxing Championship (WWBC) was place at Istanbul’s Başakşehir Youth and Sports Facility.
  • 310 boxers from 73 countries competed in the event.
  • Belarusian and Russian boxers were barred from competing in the tournament following a ban imposed as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Key Points:

  • For the first time in four years, India won a total of three medals, including one gold and two bronze.
  • Nikhat Zareen (Nizamabad, Telangana) of India won gold in the flyweight (52kg) event with 5-0 points over Thailand’s Jitpong Jutamas.
  • She became the fifth Indian woman boxer to win the World Championship with her victory.
  • Manisha Moun (Haryana) and Parveen Hooda (Haryana) were the other two Indian women boxers to win bronze medals in the 57kg and 63kg categories, respectively.

  • HDFC Securities has launched HDFC Money, a robo-advisory investment platform for all mutual fund investments.
