Bank of India Investment Managers Private Limited  launches the Bank of India Multicap Fund                       

  • Bank of India Investment Managers Private Limited (Investment manager of Bank of India Mutual Fund) has launched a New Fund Offer (NFO) – Bank of India Multi Cap Fund for investors looking to diversify their portfolio across large, mid and small cap categories.
  • The Scheme will be managed by Nitin Gosar.
  • The NFO for the Scheme opens for subscription on February 10, 2023 and closes on February 24, 2023.

Objective : 

  • To generate long term capital appreciation by investing in equity and equity-related securities across various market capitalization.

Key Highlights : 

  • The multi cap allocation strategy includes a spread of minimum 25% of its total assets each in large, mid, and small cap companies.

QUAD Nations Launch ‘QUAD Cyber Challenge’ 

  • QUAD countries launched ‘Quad Cyber Challenge’ for improving cyber security.

Aim : 

  • To strengthen the cyber security system in the Indo-Pacific region.
  • The Quad Cyber Challenge will end on 10 April, 2023.

About ‘Quad Cyber Challenge’ : 

  • The National Cyber Coordination Office along with the National Security Council (NSC) Secretariat is coordinating the Quad Cyber Challenge on behalf of India.
  • It is part of continuous efforts of Quad countries to increase cyber security awareness and create a more secure and resilient cyber ecosystem.
  • It will provide basic cybersecurity information and training to all users from corporations, educational institutions, small businesses and individuals.

Focus of the challenge : 

  • Multi-factor authentication, routine security updates, identity checks, changing passphrases regularly, identifying phishing, online scams, etc

About QUAD : 

  • The QUAD, officially the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, is a group of 4 countries: the United States, Australia, India, and Japan.
  • The group met for the first time in 2007 on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
  • The 2022 Quad summit was held in Japan and the next one will be held in Australia in 2023.

In a first, GSI discovered Lithium reserves in J&K   

  • Geological Survey of India (GSI) announced that “for the first time” it has established Lithium inferred resources of 5.9 million tonnes in the Salal-Haimana area of Reasi District of Jammu & Kashmir (J&K).
  • The announcement was made by the mines secretary Vivek Bharadwaj at the 62nd meeting of the Central Geological Programming Board (CGPB) meeting in Delhi.

Key Highlights : 

  • The GSI handed over 15 other resource bearing geological reports (G2 & G3 stage) and 35 Geological memorandums to respective state governments during the 62nd CGPB meeting.
  • The Ministry of Mines stated that 51 mineral blocks including Lithium and Gold were handed over to the state governments.
  • Out of these 51 mineral blocks, 5 blocks pertain to gold and other blocks pertain to commodities like potash, molybdenum, base metals, etc.
  • These are spread across 11 states of Jammu & Kashmir (UT), Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana.
  • With 8 million tonnes, Chile has the world’s largest known lithium reserves followed by Australia (6.2 million tonnes).
  • Now, India has the 3rd largest resource of lithium globally, but it will take time to convert it to reserves.
  • As the world produces more batteries and EVs, the demand for lithium is projected to reach 1.5 million tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE) by 2025 and over 3 million tonnes by 2030.
  • GSI is realising the commitment made by the Central Government for the auction of 500 blocks by submitting 287 geological memorandum and 195 G2&G3 reports to the state government since 2015.

G20: Two-day Urban-20 City Sherpas’ meet begins in Ahmedabad 

  • A two-day Urban-20 City Sherpas’ meeting was held in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

Aim : 

  • To focus on promoting solidarity among cities to find common solutions that are in sync with the overall objectives of the G20.
  • It is the 3rd of the G20 events being held in Gujarat as part of India’s presidency of the Group of 20.
  • The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) and the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation are holding the two-day inception meeting attended by sherpas of the cities identified for U20.

Key Highlights : 

  • The U20 is one of the G20’s engagement groups.
  • It provides a forum for cities in the G20 countries to discuss and propose collective solutions to key urban development issues, such as climate change, social inclusion, sustainable mobility and affordable housing.
  • The U20 highlights 6 priority areas: eco-friendly behaviour, water security, climate finance, local identity, urban planning and governance, and digitization of urban facilities.
  • Representatives of over 30 international cities are participating in the event to discuss the sustainable development of cities.
  • Earlier, the Tourism Working Group (TWG) meeting was organised at the Tent City in Gujarat’s Rann of Kutch as part of India’s G20 presidency.

M&M to Establish Electric Vehicle Manufacturing Facility in Telangana

  • The Telangana government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. for establishing a manufacturing facility, including development and production of electric three and four-wheelers, pertaining to its ‘Last Mile Mobility’ business.
  • The MoU was signed on the sidelines of the announcement of Telangana Mobility Valley, ‘India’s first new mobility-focused cluster’, at the first edition of Mobility Next Hyderabad Summit.
  • The facility will involve an investment of about Rs 1,000 crores, creating employment for about 800-1,000 persons.

Tamil Nadu proposed Pen Monument to Karunanidhi’s memory                 

  • In 2022, the Tamil Nadu (TN) government proposed 81 crore ‘Muthamizh Arignar Dr Kalaignar Pen Monument’ in the Bay of Bengal.
  • It will be built at a distance of 360 metres from the TN coast.

Key Highlights : 

  • The monument is to be built on Marina beach.
  • It falls under Coastal Regulation Zones (CRZ) IA, II, and IVA.
  • It requires clearance under Section 4(ii)(j) of the Coastal Regulation Zone Notification 2011 (amended up to March 2016).
  • The monument will represent Tamil culture and architecture.
  • The Pen memorial is a tribute to Karunanidhi who was one of the most influential personalities in TN and Dravidian politics.
  • The memorial is in the shape of a pen that represents Karunanidhi’s contributions to Iyal (poetry and literature), Isai (music) and Naadagam (theatre).
  • Iyal, Isai and Naadagam are 3 fundamental pillars of both ancient and contemporary Tamil.
  • The design of the monument is based on the Veena, a traditional Carnatic musical instrument that is handmade in Tamil Nadu with extreme precision.
  • It will be 42 metres tall and 2.60 m in diameter.
  • Karunanidhi was the President of the DMK from 1969 to 2018 and served as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for 5 terms between 1969 and 2011.

DGCA Imposes Rs 20 Lakh Penalty On AirAsia India

  • The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) India has imposed a Rs 20 lakh fine on Air Asia (India) for violating applicable DGCA Civil Aviation Requirements.
  • The aviation regulator suspended Air Asia’s Head of Training from his position for a period of 3 months for failing to discharge his duties.
  • A penalty of Rs 3 lakh each on eight designated examiners of the airline has also been imposed, for failing to discharge their duties.
  • Earlier, a surveillance inspection of Air Asia (India) Ltd was carried out by the DGCA during November 23 to November 25, 2022.
  • According to a senior official, during the inspection, the DGCA team observed that a few mandatory exercises of the pilots of Air Asia (India) Ltd were not done during Pilot Proficiency Check and Instrument Rating check (which is an International Civil Aviation Organisation requirement) as per schedule, resulting in violation of DGCA regulations.

Direct tax mop-up rises 24% to Rs 15.67 lakh crore

  • Gross direct tax collections grew 24% to Rs 15.67 lakh crore so far this fiscal, the finance ministry.
  • After adjusting for refunds, the net direct tax collection stood at Rs 13 lakh crore, a growth of 18.4%.
  • The net collections are about 79% of Revised Estimates of direct tax collection for current fiscal.
  • The revised estimates for the current fiscal pegged direct tax revenues at Rs 16.5 lakh crore, higher than the budget estimates of Rs 14.2 lakh crore.
  • In the current fiscal, the revenues from direct tax (includes income and corporate taxes) are projected to grow by over 17% compared to 2021-22 fiscal when the collection was Rs 14.1 lakh crore.
  • Between April to February 10, the growth rate for gross Corporate Income Tax (CIT) and gross Personal Income Tax (PIT) collections was 19.3% and 29.6%

ISRO launches SSLV-D2 rocket with 3 satellites from Sriharikota, AP        

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) launched the second developmental flight of the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV-D2) from the First Launch Pad, Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh (AP).
  • The SSLV rocket carrying 3 satellites
  1. EOS-07 (Earth Observation Satellite-07)
  2. Janus-1 (co-passenger Satellite)
  3. AzaadiSat-2 (co-passenger Satellite)
  • The objectives of the SSLV-D2 mission are the demonstration of a designed payload capacity of SSLV in low-Earth orbit, and the injection of an Earth Observation Satellite and 2 passenger satellites into a 450.7-kilometre circular orbit
  • The maiden mission of SSLV, which was launched on August 7, 2022, had failed to place its payloads into the intended orbit.

About EOS-07 : 

  • It weighs 156.3 kilograms.
  • It was developed at U R Rao Satellite Centre (URSC), ISRO.
  • EOS-07, which has a mission life of 1 year, was designed so that its “payload instruments are compatible with microsatellite buses and new technologies that are required for future operational satellites”.

About Janus-1 : 

  • It is a technology demonstrator satellite built by United States-based Antaris and its Indian partners XDLinks and Ananth Technologies.
  • It weighs only 10.2 kg and is a 6-unit cube satellite with 5 payloads on board- 2 from Singapore, and 1 each from Kenya, Australia, and Indonesia.

Qualcomm launched world’s first satellite-based two-way messaging solution – Snapdragon Satellite       

  • Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. has introduced the world’s first satellite-based two-way capable messaging solution for premium smartphones, called Snapdragon Satellite, at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2023.
  • Qualcomm and global satellite communications company, Iridium, have entered into an agreement to bring the satellite-based connectivity to next-generation premium Android smartphones.

Key Highlights : 

  • The Snapdragon Satellite will offer global connectivity using mobile messaging from around the world.
  • Devices based on the flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 mobile platform will be the first to get this technology.
  • It will be supported by an operational Iridium satellite constellation and powered by Snapdragon 5G Modem-RF Systems.
  • In terms of connectivity, the Satellite can be expanded to other devices such as tablets, vehicles, laptops and IoT (Internet of Things)
  • Notably, the Satellite system was developed to support 5G Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN), as NTN satellite infrastructure and constellations can be easily available.

  • The Honour, announced at an awards ceremony last week, will be handed over to Dr Singh in New Delhi by the National Indian Students and Alumni Union (NISAU) UK at a later date.

Nagaland govt and Patanjali Foods Ltd. sign MoU on palm oil cultivation

  • Nagaland government and Patanjali Foods Limited have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for development and area expansion under palm oil cultivation and processing for Zone-II (Mokokchung, Longleng and Mon districts) of Nagaland under the National Mission on Edible Oils-Oil Palm (NMEO-OP).
  • The MoU was signed by the Director of Agriculture, Nagaland, M Ben Yanthan, and Patanjali Foods Ltd Head-NE Region, Oil Palm Subhas Bhattacharjee at the Directorate of Agriculture, Kohima.
  • According to Patanjali Foods Ltd, the signing of MoU with the Government of Nagaland will certainly bring a big boost for the oil palm growers in the state of Nagaland and the region.
  • Patanjali Foods Ltd is already working in the states of Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Tripura in the North East.

Austrade signs MoUs to improve India’s skill and vocational training standards:

  • The Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade) has signed an MoU with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) to collaborate on Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes.
  • This MoU will focus on Australian training standards and delivery in sectors ranging across automotive, allied health, mining, IT, cyber security, renewable energy, logistics, supply chain and water management.
  • Austrade’s Australia-India Future Skills Initiative team in India will execute these actions with CII.
  • This initiative is to support India’s workforce and skills development through partnerships with Australian vocational education, training and skills providers.

Sports Minister unveils mascot, theme song, jersey for 3rd edition of Khelo India Winter Games:

  • In Jammu and Kashmir, the Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Anurag Singh Thakur along with the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha and other dignitaries launched the Mascot, Theme Song and Jersey for the 3rd edition of Khelo India Winter Games at Raj Bhawan, Jammu.
  • The beginning of the biggest sporting extravaganza at the world-famous Ski resorts of Gulmarg in the Baramulla district of Kashmir division from the 10th of this month.
  • The 3rd edition of Khelo India Winter Games is scheduled to be held from the 10th to the 14th of this month and is supported by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and is being organised by the Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council as well as the Winter Games Association of Jammu and Kashmir.
  • Around one thousand 500 athletes from across the country will take part in the games.
  • The main attractions during the mega event are a snowshoe race, ice skating, ice hockey, skiing, nordic ski, snowboarding, ski mountaineering and ice stock among others during the 5-day mega event.
  • Nine sports events will feature in the Winter Games.
  • The 1st edition of the Khelo India Winter Games took place in 2020 and hosts Jammu and Kashmir topped both editions of the games so far.

Penske’s Vergne wins drama-filled inaugural Hyderabad E-Prix:

  • Two-time champion Jean-Eric Vergne from DS Penske team held his nerves to win his maiden race at the inaugural Formula E race Hyderabad E-Prix at the street circuit on the banks of Hussain Sagar Lake at the NTR Marg.
  • The race was action-packed, with minor crashes, wheel-to-wheel action that sent the motorsport fans in the city into delirium.
  • The French driver Vergne, took advantage after TCS Jaguar’s Mitch Evans, who took the pole in the morning session and was running third at the time, crashed along with three other cars when his teammate Sam Bird rammed into him on the first turn in the 12th lap.

Joginder Sharma Announces Retirement From All Forms Of Cricket:

  • Fast bowler Joginder Sharma, who registered his name in the minds of cricket fans after bowling India to victory in the inaugural Mens T20 World Cup in 2007, has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket.
  • Sharma had represented India in four ODIs and as many T20Is from 2004 to 2007, picking five wickets across both formats.
  • In the Indian Premier League (IPL), he represented Chennai Super Kings in the first four seasons, picking 12 wickets in 16 matches.
  • But he is most remembered for his last-over heroics in the T20 World Cup final against Pakistan in Johannesburg.
  • Tasked to bowl the final over by captain M.S. Dhoni in the match, Joginder had to defend six runs off four balls with one wicket remaining.

  • Oscar- and Grammy-winning composer, pianist, arranger and producer Burt Bacharach Passed away at the age of 94 in Los Angeles, California, United States of America (USA).

About Burt Bacharach : 

  • Bacharach was born in May 12, 1928, Kansas City, Missouri, U.S
  • He composed 100s of pop songs from the late 1950s.
  • He worked with big names such as Dionne Warwick, Aretha Franklin, Dusty Springfield, and Tom Jones.
  • Some of his popular works are “Walk on By,” “Do You Know the Way to San Jose,” “What the World Needs Now,” “I Say a Little Prayer,” “Anyone Who Had a Heart,” “Don’t Make Me Over”.

Awards & Honors : 

  • He won 3 Oscar awards in 1970 (twice) – Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid & “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head” & 1982 – “Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do)”
