World Health Day- April 7th

  • April 7 is celebrated and observed as World Health Day.
  • The day is celebrated annually in accordance with the World Health Organization’s aim to discuss health-related issues and to draw attention to specific health issues concerning people across the world.
  • The theme for this year’s World Health Day is “Our Planet, Our Health”.
  • World Health Day was one of the first official acts of the World Health Organization, which came into force on 7th April 1948.
  • The first World Health Day was celebrated on 22 July in 1949 and the date was later changed to 7 April, in order to encourage student participation.
  • In order to understand the history of World Health Day, it is important to look at the creation of the World Health Organization, which took place in 1945 at the United Nations Conference.

Jal Shakti Minister launches Digital Dashboard for District Ganga Committees Performance Monitoring System:

  • Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat has launched the Digital Dashboard for District Ganga Committees Performance Monitoring System.
  • Shekhawat stated that the Digital Dashboard launched will help the District Ganga Committees DGCs in enhancing people-river connect.
  • Pointing out that some DGCs are not conducting regular meeting, he urged the District Magistrates to make sure that Ganga cleaning becomes a priority and under the chairmanship of District Magistrates cleanliness in River Ganga is ensured.
  • The cleaning of Ganga means cleaning of all its tributaries and it is important that the district officials take ownership of the assets created under Namami Gange Programme in the Ganga Basin and ensure their smooth functioning.

IMF lauds India’s PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana program:

  • International Monetary Fund (IMF) has lauded India’s food subsidy program which prevented the increased prevalence of extreme poverty in the country during Covid-19.
  • In a report the IMF, the expansion of food transfers and subsidies make it an important instrument for poverty alleviation.
  • Appreciating the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana, the report demonstrated that the program provided insurance to the poor and prevented an increase in the prevalence of extreme poverty in the country.
  • It stated that doubling of entitlements in 2020 during pandemic helped maintain extreme poverty at the low 0.8 percent level.
  • Without any food subsidies, extreme poverty in the pandemic years would have increased by 1.05 per cent.
  • The report said that poverty in the country declined the fastest during the period 2014 to 2019.

Rajnath Singh inaugurates Air Force Commanders’ Conference in Delhi:

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has inaugurated the Air Force Commanders’ Conference AFCC at Air Headquarters in New Delhi.
  • The conference was attended by Minister of State for Defence Ajay Bhatt and Defence Secretary Dr Ajay Kumar along with senior commanders of the Indian Air Force.
  • To provide a boost to the growing indigenous drone industry, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh launched the “MEHAR BABA COMPETITION – II”.
  • The competition is aimed at developing technology for a “Swarm Drone based system to detect Foreign Objects on Aircraft Operating Surfaces”.
  • During the three-day conference, the Air Force Commanders will discuss important issues related to future challenges in a Hi-tech and evolving operational scenario.
  • The theme for this Conference is ‘Optimising human resources’ and the focus will be on conduct of operations in a smart and efficient manner.

Stand-Up India Scheme completes 6 years:

  • Stand Up India scheme was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 5th April 2016.
  • It facilitates loans to Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, and women borrowers for setting up a greenfield enterprise in manufacturing, services, or trading sector.
  • Stand Up India Scheme was launched to promote entrepreneurship at grass-roots level focusing on economic empowerment and job creation.
  • The objective of the Stand-Up India Scheme is to facilitate loans between 10 lakh and one crore rupees to at least one Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe borrower and one-woman borrower per bank branch.
  • In 2019-20, the Stand-Up India scheme was extended till 2025.
  • The scheme envisages facilitating the dreams of aspiring SC, ST, and women entrepreneurs to reality by supporting their energy and enthusiasm and removing many hurdles from their path.

MP govt launches Udyam Kranti Yojana scheme to give loan up to Rs 50L with subsidised interest rate for self-employment

  • Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan launched the ‘Udyam Kranti Yojana’ to facilitate self-employment for the youth, in MP.

About the scheme :

  • Under this scheme, the state government will give a loan guarantee of Rs 1 lakh – Rs 50 lakh for self-employment with subsidies on the interest rates.

Goal :

  • Set to benefit one lakh youth in the financial year 2022-23.
  • Also a guarantee on bank loans worth Rs 140 crores for self-employment given.
  • The MP government has provided loans and subsidies to 16 lakh people for self-employment.
  • The state cabinet has decided to establish the country’s biggest medical devices park in Ujjain on 360 acres.

Punjab govt to issue digital sale receipts to farmers

  • Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann led- Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government decided to provide digital J-Forms to the farmers across the state from April 1, 2022.

Purpose :

  • To ensure transparency and empowerment of farmers in the state.
  • With this Punjab Mandi Board’s (PMB) initiative, it would benefit more than 9 lakh registered farmers in the state by providing J-Forms digitally for their agriculture produce sold in mandis on their WhatsApp account immediately after the sale confirmation by the arhtiya and buyers on the system.

About J Form :

  • The J-Form is available from the PMB website https://emandikaran-pb.in using their Arthia Login ID and DigiLocker, a GoI digital document wallet, according to Bhagwant Mann.
  • J-Form is a sale receipt for agricultural produce sold by farmers in mandis that were previously issued manually by arthias.
  • In accordance with Rule 9A of the Information Technology (Preservation and Retention of Information by Intermediaries providing Digital Locker facilities) Rules, 2016, notified on February 8, 2017.
  • Digital JForms has a QR code, a watermark, and a unique number to ensure authenticity.

Note :

  • The Punjab Mandi Board will be the first in the country to issue e-JForms (for MSP procured Paddy and Wheat exclusively).

ADB projects India’s economy to grow by 7.5% in FY23

  • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has projected the GDP growth rate of the Indian economy, in its flagship Asian Development Outlook (ADO) 2022 projected India’s economic growth for the year 2022-23 (FY23) – 7.5 percent & 2023-24 (FY24) – 8.0 percent.
  • The growth in South Asia is projected to slow to seven per cent in 2022, before picking up to 7.4 per cent in 2023.
  • The sub-region’s growth dynamics are largely driven by India and Pakistan.
  • ADB stated developing Asia’s economies are predicted to grow by 5.2 per cent this year and 5.3 per cent in 2023, thanks to a robust recovery in domestic demand and continued expansion in exports.
  • Developing Asia comprises 46 member countries of ADB by geographic group: the Caucasus and Central Asia, East Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific.

India’s trade deficit rises 88% to $192.41 billion in FY22:

  • India’s trade deficit rose 87.5 per cent to USD 192.41 billion in 2021-22 as against USD 102.63 billion in the previous year, the government data showed.
  • While total exports during last fiscal year increased to a record high of USD 417.81 billion, imports too soared to USD 610.22 billion, leaving a trade gap of USD 192.41 billion.
  • India’s merchandise import in April 2021-March 2022 was USD 610.22 billion, an increase of 54.71 per cent over USD 394.44 billion in April 2020-March 2021 and an increase of 28.55 per cent over USD 474.71 billion in April 2019-March 2020.
  • The trade deficit in March 2022 was USD 18.69 billion, while it was USD 192.41 billion during entire 2021-22.

Ex-chief justice of Pakistan Gulzar Ahmed as caretaker PM

  • Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan nominated former chief justice Gulzar Ahmed as caretaker Prime Minister.
  • This comes a day after the National Assembly deputy speaker disallowed a no-trust confidence motion against Imran Khan.
  • Mr. Imran Ahmad Khan Niazi, shall continue as Prime Minister till the appointment of caretaker Prime Minister under Article 224 A (4) of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

RBI approves re-appointment of Murali M. Natrajan as MD & CEO of DCB Bank for two years

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved the re-appointment of Murli M Natarajan as the managing director and chief executive officer (MD & CEO) of DCB Bank for a period of two years, from April 29, 2022 to April 28, 2024.
  • In 2024, he will complete 15 years at the helm of the bank.

About Murali M. Natrajan :

  • Natrajan was appointed as the bank’s MD and CEO back in May 2009.
  • Prior to that, he worked with foreign banks such as Citibank and Standard Chartered.
  • From November 2004 to June 2008 he was Head of Consumer Banking, India & Nepal, Standard Chartered Bank.
  • He had joined Citibank in 1989 & spent 14 years in Citibank in various departments credit, finance, operations, product management, among others.

  • RBI has capped the tenure of bank chief executives at 15 years.
  • DCB is the 1st bank in India to start an Aadhar based ATM in 2016.

  • The 98-year-old has to his credit 32 collections of poems, 15 novels, 30 short-story collections, 15 books of literary criticism, four collections of essays, travelogues, and several memoirs.

India to aid construction of wastewater treatment plant in Nepal

  • The Indian embassy in Kathmandu has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration, Government of Nepal and Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality, Soulukhumbu for the construction of Khumjung Khunde wastewater management project.
  • The community development project shall be built under India-Nepal Development Cooperation with the financial assistance of the Government of India at a total estimated cost of Nepali rupees 13 million
  • The implementation of this project reflects the continued support of the Government of India in bolstering the efforts of the Government of Nepal in the upliftment of its people.
  • The construction of this project will improve the health and quality of life of the people living in Khumjung village, Solukbumbu providing them with safe water and improved sanitation, which are essential for improving the public health.

Note :

  • Since 2003, India has taken up over 523 High Impact Development Projects (HICDPs) in Nepal and has completed 467 projects in the areas of health, education, drinking water, connectivity, sanitation and creation of other public utilities across all seven provinces of Nepal at the grassroots level.
  • Amongst these, 78 projects have been undertaken in Province-1 Nepal including two projects in Solukhumbu District.

HAL, Israel Aerospace tie up to turn civil aircraft into mid-air refuellers

  • Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) to convert civil passenger aircraft to “multi mission tanker transport” (MMTT) aircraft in India.

Scope :

  • It Covers passenger to freighter aircraft” conversion along with MMTT conversion
  • The MoU was signed in Delhi by Maiti, CEO (MiG Complex), HAL and Yaacov Berkovitz, VP & GM Aviation Group, IAI.
  • Under the pact, HAL will convert pre-owned Civil (Passenger) aircraft into air refueling aircraft with cargo and transport capabilities, it will replace the IL-78 mid-air refueling
  • At present, the Indian Air Force and Navy jets are refuelled mid-air using the Russian-made IL-78
  • The MoU will facilitate HAL and IAI’s decades’ long expertise in developing, manufacturing and producing leading defence platforms.

Union Bank Launches UnionNXT Super App & digital transformation project SMBHAV

  • On April 06, 2022, Union Bank of India launched its super-app named UnionNXT – Do it Yourself and also unveiled ‘Union SAMBHAV – World of Opportunities,’ a future digital ready transformation project.
  • For the Project the Union bank has allocated an investment outlay of around Rs 1,000 crore for the current financial year 2022-23 (FY23).

Aim :

  • To have 50 percent business originating on the digital platform by 2025.

Goal:

  • To provide customers with smarter ways to do banking across all segments, with a focus on Do It Yourself (DIY).
  • With this, it joins the league of super apps from big lenders like Yono from State Bank of India, Bob world from Bank of Baroda and PayZapp from HDFC Bank and iMobile from ICICI Bank.

HAL Hands Over Gaganyaan Hardware to ISRO                                                

  • Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) handed over the first set of Gaganyaan hardware to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) during the inauguration of HAL’s PS2/GS2 stage integration facility in Bengaluru, Karnataka.
  • The PS2 and GS2 stages serve as the second stages of India’s launch vehicles PSLV and GSLV respectively and are powered by a Vikas engine, which uses liquid fuels.
  • HAL also handed over the 150th Make Satellite Bust Shelter on this occasion.
  • HAL, India’s premier aerospace manufacturer, has been working with Isro in providing a key set of equipment for the Gaganyaan mission.
  • It has been working with Isro in the development of its big launcher, the PSLV, and the GSLV.
  • It has in the past also delivered tanks, and satellite structures for the PSLV, GSLV-Mk-II, and GSLV-Mk III launch vehicles.

  • In January 2021, the Indian space agency had successfully conducted the third long-duration hot test on the liquid propellant Vikas engine that would launch the Gaganyaan mission & the engine was fired for 240 seconds at the test facility of Isro Propulsion Complex (IPRC), Mahendragiri in Tamil Nadu.

  • According to Bloomberg Billionaire Index, Adani’s net worth as of April 2, 2022, joined the $100 billion club of richest entrepreneurs in the world surpassing Mukesh Ambani.
  • With this latest development, Adani is the tenth richest person in the world, while Reliance Industries chairman Ambani slipped to the 11th position with $99 billion in wealth (with an increase of $9.03 billion so far this year).
  • So far Adani’s net wealth increased by $23.5 billion in 2022.

Forbes 2022 rich list : Elon Musk tops & Mukesh Ambani ranks 10th

  • As per the Forbes’ 36th annual ranking of the world’s richest people list, Elon Musk, the Tesla and SpaceX founder topped Forbes’ list for the first time ever with a net worth of $219 billion.
  • Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani is the 10th richest person in the world, followed by Infrastructure tycoon Gautam Adani and his family, which claimed the 11th spot on Forbes’ annual world’s billionaires list.
  • The United States has the highest number of billionaires in the world with 735, up from 724 last year & China remains second, with 607 (including Hong Kong and Macau), followed by India (166), Germany (134) and Russia (83).

  • Mukesh Ambani is the Only Indian among the top 10 on the Forbes 2022 rich list.

India beats Malaysia to register third consecutive victory in FIH Women’s Junior World Cup in South Africa:

  • In the FIH Women’s Junior World Cup, India defeated Malaysia four-nil, to register their third consecutive victory in their pool D campaign at Potchefstroom, South Africa.
  • That’s the end of the group stage for India, who win three from three and confirm a spot against South Korea in the quarterfinal.
  • The 4-0 win over Malaysia had a brace from Mumtaz Khan, on either side of goals from Sangita Kumari and Lalrindiki.
  • Earlier, India outplayed Germany 2-1 and in their first pool D match, India defeated Wales 5-1.
  • India are now unbeaten table toppers from their pool.
  • India will take on Korea in the quarterfinal encounter.
