International Mother Earth Day -22 April

  • Earth Day is observed on April 22 aims to spread awareness about issues, including pollution, deforestation and global warming.
  • The theme for Earth Day 2022 is “Invest In our Planet” calling for businesses to shift towards sustainable practices.
  • The United Nations celebrates the day as International Mother Earth Day.
  • It will mark the day with a “Harmony with Nature” theme.
  • Earth Day was first celebrated on April 22, 1970.
  • Notably, World Earth Day was earlier decided to be celebrated on March 21, 1970, as the day one of spring in the Northern Hemisphere.
  • Thereafter, US Senator Gaylord Nelson proposed to hold nationwide environmental enlightenment on April 22, 1970, which was later renamed ‘Earth Day.

NITI Aayog, UNICEF India sign Statement of Intent on SDGs with focus on children:

  • NITI Aayog and UNICEF India signed a Statement of Intent on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with a focus on children.
  • This seeks to formalize a framework of cooperation to launch the first report on the State of India’s Children – Status and Trends in Multidimensional Child Development.
  • NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman Dr Rajiv Kumar, this new initiative is built on the ethos of SDG attainments for children and ensuring that no child is left behind.
  • Child-focused initiative builds on the government’s effort of monitoring progress through the SDG India Index and Dashboard, which continues to be a unique data-driven initiative for triggering policy action.

Narendra Singh Tomar inaugurates a nationwide meeting on agriculture for the 2022 Kharif campaign:

  • Union Agriculture Minister Shri Narendra Singh Tomar has launched the National Conference on Agriculture for the Kharif Campaign 2022-23 at the NASC Complex in New Delhi.
  • According to the 2nd Advance Estimates (2021-22), total food grain production in the country will reach 3160 lakh tonnes, a new high.
  • The production of pulses and oilseeds will be 5 lakh tonnes and 371.5 lakh tonnes, respectively.
  • The Minister added that the centre and states will collaborate to secure the availability of herbicides and seeds, lowering farmers’ input prices.

PM Modi to inaugurate the 7th edition of Raisina Dialogue on April 25:

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the seventh edition of Raisina Dialogue on the 25th of April.
  • President of the European Union Ursula von Der Leyen will be the chief guest at the Dialogue.
  • Several former Prime Ministers of different countries and other dignitaries will also participate in this virtual event.
  • The three-day event is based on the theme – Terranova, impassioned, impatient, imperilled.
  • There are six broad thematic pillars of the dialogue including Rethinking Democracy, End of Multilateralism, Water Caucuses, and Achieving Green Transitions.
  • Raisina Dialogue will have around 100 sessions with over 210 speakers from 90 countries.

Rajnath Singh to inaugurate DefConnect 2.0 to woo investors in Delhi:

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to inaugurate DefConnect 2.0 organised by Innovations for Defence Excellence, Defence Innovation Organisation (iDEX-DIO) in New Delhi.
  • It will include sessions with stalwarts of the industry, various announcements and static exhibitions of an array of start-ups supported by iDEX-DIO.
  • The DefConnect will provide a unique opportunity for innovators associated with iDEX-DIO to showcase their capabilities, products and state-of-the-art technologies to the target audience of the industry leaders.
  • Toll date, iDEX has launched five rounds of Defence India Start-up Challenges and three rounds of Open Challenges receiving more than 2,000 applications from individual innovators and start-ups.
  • The index, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2018, essentially provides a unified platform for various stakeholders in the defence and aerospace sectors.
  • It acts as an umbrella organisation to oversee technology development and potential collaborations in this specific field.

Government Officials to be trained in National Cyber Exercise:

  • The National Cyber Security Incident Response Exercise (NCX India) is being organized by the National Security Council Secretariat for government officials and critical sector organizations to strengthen the country’s cyber posture.
  • The NCX India exercise will be held till 29th April 2022.
  • The National Cyber Security Incident Response Exercise was kicked off by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.
  • According to a statement from the National Security Council Secretariat, more than 140 officials would be trained through training sessions, Live Fire, and Strategic exercises.

Surat hosts the Smart Cities, Smart Urbanization’ conference:

  • The 3-day “Smart Cities, Smart Urbanization” conference had a grand opening in Surat.
  • The event is being organised by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Government of India with Surat Smart City Corporation Development , under the clarion call of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM), given by the Hon’ble Prime Minister to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Independence.
  • An awards distribution ceremony was organised, during the inaugural wherein award winners of the India Smart Cities Awards Contest (ISAC) 2020 were felicitated.
  • These awards were earlier announced through the virtual conference in 2021.
  • However, the award distribution ceremony was deferred due to the prevailing COVID-19 situation at that time.
  • Surat and Indore were given the Best city award, while Uttar Pradesh was awarded the Best State.

India to provide additional $500 million to Sri Lanka for fuel      

  • India will provide an additional $500 million in financial assistance to Sri Lanka for it to buy fuel.
  • Assistance by the IMF will take about six months to come to us and it will come in tranches.
  • During the intervening period, we need to find funds to keep our people supplied with essentials.
  • This will be the second $500 million India has provided in fuel credit to a Sri Lanka government battling the country’s worst financial crisis in living memory.
  • The first line of credit was used up earlier this month after a shipment of 120,000 tons of diesel and 40,000 tons of petrol.
  • So far India has provided nearly 400,000 tons of fuel.

Assam celebrates Rongali Bohag Bihu Festival

  • One of the biggest festivals of Assam, Bohag Bihu or Rongali Bihu, falls in the second week of April every year, marking the beginning of the harvest period.
  • In 2022 Bohag Bihu observed from April 14 to April 16.
  • Rongali means joy in Assamese and the festival indeed is the time to rejoice and make merry with family and community.
  • The word Bihu is derived from the Sanskrit word Bishu, meaning “to ask blessing and prosperity from the Gods” before the harvest season.
  • Bihu is celebrated thrice during the given year which signifies three different farming cycles: Bhogali Bihu, Bohag Bihu and Kongali Bihu.
  • Bohag Bihu coincides with other harvest festivals such as Baisakhi, Vishu and Tamil New Year.

Significance :

  • Bohag Bihu marks the start of the harvest season and it’s the time of seeding.
  • It is also celebrated as the Assamese New Year.

History :

  • The history of Bihu goes back to ancient times, around 3500 BC, when people made fire sacrifices for better harvest.

Tripura govt launches new industrial investment promotion scheme

  • The Tripura government launched the “Tripura Industrial Investment Promotion Incentive Scheme (TIIPIS), 2022″ for the next 5 years with effect from 1 April, 2022 to 31 March, 2027.

Purpose :

  • To boost the investment and the industries development of Tripura.

About TIIPIS :

  • Under this scheme, various subsidies would be provided to companies and Self Help Groups for setting up industries in Tripura.
  • It would encourage the entrepreneurs to set up their industrial units based on the local raw materials like rubber, bamboo, agriculture and horticultural produce, gas, tea, Agar oil extraction, rubber wood processing and some demand based service and manufacturing sector activities related to tourism promoting activities like, water-sports, ropeways, floating, restaurants and hospital and nursing home, processing of plastic waste and e-waste, municipal waste.

Details of various incentives approved under TIIPIS – 2022 :

  • Capital Investment Subsidy for MSME on fixed capital investment, maximum limit of subsidy is 100 Lakhs for Non-thrust sector and Rs.125.00 Lakhs for Thrust sector enterprises: [Enhanced from Rs.60 Lakhs and Rs.70 Lakhs).
  • Capital Investment Subsidy for Large scale enterprises on the investment made in land and building is 200 Lakhs per enterprise.
  • Capital Investment Subsidy may also be provided to Private Sector infrastructure Developer for creation of industrial infrastructure where the land area is not below 30 acres, 30% of capital investment subject to an upper ceiling of Rs.500 Lakhs.

Partial Reimbursement of Power Charges:

  • The industrial units with connected load up to 20 HP shall be provided partial reimbursement of power charges @25% of power charges actually paid by the enterprise.

State Transport Subsidy:

  • State Transport Subsidy shall be provided @50% of transportation cost incurred for movement of secondary raw materials from outside the state in place of the existing @10% Transport subsidy for transportation of finished goods.

India Post Payments Bank launches Fincluvation’

  • On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of Indian Independence & ongoing Azadi ka Amrit Mahotasav, India Post Payments Bank (IPPB), a 100% government owned entity under Department of Posts (DoP) has launched Fincluvation– a joint initiative to collaborate with Fintech Startup community to co-create and innovate solutions for financial inclusion.
  • Fincluvation will be a permanent platform of IPPB to co-create inclusive financial solutions with participating start-ups.
  • The first-of-its-kind industry initiative, Fincluvation would create a powerful platform to mobilize the start-up community towards building meaningful financial products aimed at financial inclusion.

Startups can develop solutions aligned with:

  • Creditization – Develop Innovative & Inclusive credit products aligned with the use cases of target customers and take them to their doorsteps through Postal network.
  • Digitization – Bring convenience through convergence of traditional services with Digital Payment Technologies such as making the traditional Money Order service as Interoperable Banking service.
  • Any Market-led solutions that can help solve any other problem relevant to IPPB and/or DoP in serving the target customers

Sebi rejigs Advisory Panel on Leveraging Regulatory and Technology Solutions:

  • Sebi has reconstituted its advisory committee, which provides guidance on enhancing the regulator’s technological capabilities and on exploring appropriate technological solutions for the early detection of market anomalies.
  • The Advisory Committee for Leveraging Regulatory and Technology Solutions (ALeRTS) will now be headed by Sunil Bajpai, former Principal Advisor (Information Technology) at the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).
  • The seven-member committee, set up by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) in December 2021, was earlier chaired by Madhabi Puri Buch, current regulator chief.

Indian-American Navy Veteran Shanti Sethi Appointed as Kamala Harris’s Defence Adviser

  • Indian-American US Navy Shanti Sethi has been appointed as executive secretary and defence advisor to Vice President Kamala Harris.
  • In her new role she will be coordinating with National Security Advisor documentation across the Office of the Vice President
  • Sethi is the only Indian-American woman and the 15th female officer to command a major US Navy combat warship.
  • She was also the first female commander of a US naval vessel to visit India.
  • Kamala Harris is the first-ever person of Indian origin to be elected as the Vice President of the United States.

  • Shanti Sethi was born in Reno, Nevada
  • She joined the US Navy in 1993 when the combat exclusion law was still in effect.
  • She commanded USS Decatur, the guided missile destroyer from 15 December 2010 to May 2012.

Lt Gen Manoj Kumar Katiyar appointed as next Director-General of military operations

  • Lieutenant General Manoj Kumar Katiyar has been appointed as the next Director General of Military Operations (DGMO).
  • He will be taking over the office on May 1,2022.
  • Presently, he is the General Officer Commanding of 1 Corps, a strike formation responsible for offensive operations against both Pakistan and China.

  • Katiyar is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy & he also graduated from the National War College, USA.
  • He was commissioned in the 23rd battalion of the Rajput Regiment in 1986.

  • He commanded an infantry brigade along the Western borders and a mountain division.

P&G India appoints L V Vaidyanathan as CEO for India operations

  • Packaged consumer goods company Procter & Gamble appointed LV Vaidyanathan as chief executive officer for its operations in India from July 1, 2022.
  • He will take over from Madhusudan Gopalan.
  • Currently LV Vaidyanathan is leading P&G business in Indonesia as CEO where he has been “responsible for industry-leading growth and value creation for the company.

  • L V Vaidyanathan completed his Bachelor of Engineering (mechanical) from the National Institute of Technology, Nagpur and has an MBA from IIM-Ahmedabad.

  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of Sood as principal scientific advisor to the government.

  • Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Madhavrao Scindia will be the Chief Guest of the event.
  • He has played a key role in enhancing defence trade in various capacities in Boeing, Lockheed Martin and now General Atomics.

Tripura Govt signs MoU with NIXI-CSC to set up International Data Centre

  • The Tripura government has inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NIXI-CSC Data Services Centre to establish an international standard Data Centre.
  • National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) and CSE e-governance services Ltd, have floated a joint venture – NIXI-CSC Data Services Centre to set up the proposed Data Centre.
  • The MoU was signed by the Director of the state IT department, AK Bhattacharjee and CEO of the NIXI-CSC Data Services Centre, Anil Jain.
  • The joint venture company will invest Rs 150 crore for setting up the Data Centre while the state government will provide only space.
  • Under the MoU, the joint venture will allow the state government to host all its data in the proposed Data Centre and it will also provide data to the state free of cost.
  • The company will charge for data exchange to other government and private players.

Additional Info :

  • In December 2021, The Tripura cabinet had approved the investment proposal of CSC SPV to set up a data centre in Agartala in partnership with NIXI.
  • Tripura government launched ‘Tripura Data Center Policy-2021’ to encourage the IT industries in the state.

SSDMA and GSI signed MoU for “Early Warning System” based on Rainfall Threshold

  • The Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA) and Geological Survey of India (GSI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for developing a Regional Level Early Warning System based on Rainfall Threshold; at the chamber of Secretary-cum-Relief Commissioner of Land Revenue & Disaster Management Department.
  • The MoU was signed by the Secretary-cum-Relief Commissioner of Land Revenue & Disaster Management Department – Sarala Rai on behalf of SSDMA and the Director General of GSI – S. Raju.

Objective :

  • To communicate important and timely data on landslides with the department, which might save lives & property in the state.
  • Landslide susceptibility maps at a scale of 1:50000 have been developed for 17 states, including Sikkim, and that around 3 lakh square kilometres of land have been mapped throughout the country, resulting in a database for about 60,000 landslides.
  • GSI services are primarily focused in the service of people and wanted State Government’s support to make the forecasting model a success.
  • The MoU was also signed with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in order to obtain timely weather data that would be useful in the development of a resilient system.
  • According to the District Authorities, the same system is used in the Nilgiris, Darjeeling, and Kalimpong Hills, which gives 60 percent to 70 percent accurate forecasts.

Russia test fires the world’s most powerful’ nuclear-capable missile

  • Russia successfully test-fired the Sarmat missile, a new nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic weapon for the first time from Plesetsk in northwest Russia.

About Sarmat missile :

  • The missle hit targets in the Kamchatka peninsula, nearly 6,000 km (3,700 miles)
  • Sarmat has been dubbed Satan 2 by Western analysts.
  • It weighs more than 200 tonnes and can transport more than ten warheads.
  • Sarmat is a three-stage, liquid-fueled missile with a range of 18,000 km.
  • The missile is 3 meters long and 3 meters in diameter.
  • It has been designed to elude anti-missile defence systems with a short initial boost phase, giving enemy surveillance systems a tiny window to track.

Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah among Wisden’s Five Cricketers of the Year:

  • India captain Rohit Sharma and pacer Jasprit Bumrah have been named among the “Five Cricketers of the Year” in the 2022 edition of the Wisden Almanack.
  • Besides the duo, the list also features New Zealand batter Devon Conway, England pacer Ollie Robinson and Proteas women star Dane van Niekerk.
  • England’s Joe Root has been named the leading cricketer in the world, while South African women’s team batter Lizelle Lee has been awarded the title of leading woman cricketer.
  • Virat Kohli was the last Indian to feature on the list, in 2019.
  • Sharma and Bumrah topped India’s averages as the tourists wrested a 2-1 lead in a five-match series last summer that is set to conclude in July this year after a Covid outbreak led to the cancellation of the last Test in Manchester.
