International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day – 26th April:

  • Every year on April 26th, International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day marks the anniversary of this historic nuclear accident.
  • The day also focuses on the prevention of future nuclear disasters.
  • On April 26th, 1986, the worst nuclear accident in history took place.
  • The horrific event occurred in Chernobyl, Ukraine.
  • The radiation released into the air contaminated 150,000 square miles in three countries: Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus.
  • After the 30th anniversary of the accident, on December 8, 2016, the United Nations adopted the resolution and proclaimed April 26 as the International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day.

World Intellectual Property Day -April 26th

  • Every year, on April 26, people throughout the world celebrate World Intellectual Property Day.
  • The purpose of the day is to create public awareness about the importance of intellectual property rights, including patents, copyright, trademarks, and designs.
  • This year, World Intellectual Property Day 2022’s theme focuses on “IP and Youth innovating for a Better Future.”
  • The event was established by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 2000 to “raise awareness of how patents, copyright, trademarks and designs impact on daily life.”
  • As a result of the 1970 implementation of the WIPO Convention, member nations of the organisation proclaimed April 26th, 2000, as World Intellectual Property Day.

International Delegate’s Day – 25th April:

  • International Delegates Day is observed every year on April 25th.
  • This day is celebrated to raise awareness of the role of representatives and delegates from the Member States at the United Nations.
  • International Delegates Day commemorates the first day of the San Francisco Conference, also known as the United Nations Conference on International Organization.
  • The General Assembly, in resolution 73/286 dated 2 April 2019, recalls the accomplishments of the San Francisco Conference and declares 25 April as International Delegates Day.

NITI Aayog released a draft battery swapping policy for 2022:

  • Government think tank Niti Aayog has released a draft battery swapping policy under which all metropolitan cities with a population above 40 lakh will be prioritised for the development of a battery swapping network under the first phase.
  • All major cities such as state capitals, UT headquarters and cities with a population above 5 lakh will be covered under the second phase, given the importance of the two-wheeler and three-wheeler vehicle segments in growing cities.
  • According to the draft policy, vehicles with swappable batteries will be sold without a battery, providing the benefit of lower purchase costs to potential EV owners.

India’s participated as the Guest of honour at the Paris Book Festival 2022:

  • The Paris Book Festival was inaugurated on 21st April 2022 & India Pavilion at the Paris Book Festival was inaugurated.
  • India’s participation as a guest of honour at the Paris Book Festival 2022 will serve as a platform to celebrate our literary and linguistic diversity.
  • The India Pavilion which has been designed by National Institute of Design (NID), houses more than 15 digital and physical exhibitions displaying over 400 books published in various Indian languages representing the works of 65 Indian publishers.
  • Among the highlights of Indian presentation are launch and sale/exhibition of 10 illustrated children’s books in French translation published by National Book Trust, India (NBT).
  • Out of these books, one includes a story by Rabindranath Tagore, and another a book on Mahatma Gandhi for kids. A special edition book on Chandernagore situated in West Bengal in India highlighting French legacy in India would also be launched.

Maharashtra becomes first state in country to get 100% digital buses with ‘Tap In, Tap Out’ facility

  • Maharashtra State Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray, inaugurated the city’s first completely digital bus on the Gateway of India to Churchgate route, with a unique ‘Tap-in Tap-out’ feature.
  • Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) is India’s first bus service to go completely digital.
  • This service will be implemented on all 10 buses on this route in a few days and later expand it on all 438 routes across the city.
  • It provides ease and convenience to the travellers as they can tap-in using their smart card or via the ‘Chalo’ app installed in their smartphones.
  • Initially, the ‘Tap-in Tap-out’ feature will be available in two buses only, but service providers are likely to deploy this digital bus service on 200 routes in the city soon.
  • The traveller gets a receipt on their mobile phone if they tap out using the app, and can also collect their ticket if they use the smart card after completing the journey.

Dhanlaxmi Bank signs MoU with CBDT and CBIC

  • Dhanlaxmi Bank signed an MOU with Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) and Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) for collection of Direct Taxes and Indirect Taxes.
  • Bank has been authorised by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) based on the recommendation from the Controller General of Accounts for collection of various Taxes.

Signatories :

  • Shri Shivan J K, Managing Director & CEO of the Bank and Ms. Bharati Das, The Principal Chief Controller of Accounts- for CBDT and Shri Dhruva Kumar Singh, Chief Controller of Accounts – for CBIC in New Delhi.
  • With this, Dhanlaxmi Bank customers will soon be able to pay their Direct taxes and GST payments & other Indirect taxes through the branch network and digital platforms of the Bank.
  • The technical integration required to implement the seamless flow of remittances from the Bank’s portal to that of CBDT and CBIC will be completed at the earliest in order to provide early access to its customers towards the facilities.
  • On October 4, 2021, Dhanlaxmi Bank had been empanelled as ‘Agency Bank’ by the Reserve Bank of India to undertake general banking businesses of Central and State Government on behalf of the RBI.

Additional Info :

  • Dhanlaxmi Bank was put under the Prompt Corrective Action (PCA) framework by RBI in November 2015 due to its deteriorating financial health and only it came out of these restrictions in 2021.

  • YuWaah (Generation Unlimited India) in India announced that Ashwin Yardi, CEO of Capgemini in India, comes on board to be the co-chair of YuWaah, effective immediately along with Yasumasa Kimura, UNICEF Representative.

  • Ashwin is CEO of Capgemini Technology Services India and also a member of Capgemini Group Executive Committee.
  • He is an accomplished leader with more than 25 years of experience in consulting and information technology.

France’s Emmanuel Macron Wins 2nd Term as President

  • French President Emmanuel Macron won re-election after defeating his rival Marine Le Pen
  • Centrist Macron was set to win around 58 percent of the vote in the second-round run-off compared with Le Pen on 42 percent
  • French Presidential Elections 2022 were held on April 10-24, 2022.

  • Macron became the first President in France in 20 years to win the re-election.

Kerala & Netherlands sign MoU for Cosmos Malabaricus project

  • Kerala and the Netherlands have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for a project named ‘Cosmos Malabaricus’.
  • The Project will help illustrate the history of Kerala in the 18th century.

Aim :

  • To make the digitised Dutch archival material accessible to the majority of audiences, including international and Indian scholars and the people of Kerala.
  • To establish painting academics at Kollam and Malappuram.
  • The Cosmos Malabaricas project is being implemented by the Kerala Council for Historical Research (KCHR) under the Department of Higher Education, the National Archives of the Netherlands and the University of Leiden.
  • The MoU has been signed in the presence of Pinarayi Vijayan, chief minister, Kerala and Marten van den Berg, Netherlands Ambassador to India.
  • The project will be completed in six years.

About Cosmos Malabaricas project :

  • Cosmos Malabaricus will help understand more about the political, social, economic and cultural history of Kerala.

Object of the Project :

  • To make already digitised Dutch archival material accessible to the widest possible audience, including international and Indian scholars and the people of Kerala.
  • It will be done through translation and publication of summaries in English.
  • These records contain a “treasure trove” of information regarding the political and military organisations, dynastic developments, economic matters, social and religious aspects of Kerala.
  • The material is written in classical Dutch language and is available in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and the Netherlands
  • The MoU for the establishment of the Paint Academy was signed by ASAP (Additional Skill Acquisition Programme), Indian Institute of Infrastructure & Construction, Kollam; CREDAI, Kerala and Axo Noble India Limited, the Indian subsidiary of a leading paint and chemical company in the Netherlands.
  • The paint academy at the IIICC campus at Chavara, Kollam will impart training in painting buildings while the academy at ASAP Skill Sky Park in Thavanur, Malappuram will train in painting vehicles.
  • In the first year, the academy aim is to train 380 people.

Prasar Bharati signs MoU with Public Broadcaster of Argentina

  • Prasar Bharati has signed an MoU with the Public Broadcaster of Argentina Radio Television Argentina (RTA) for collaboration in the field of broadcasting.
  • The MoU encompasses a range of fronts in Media and Broadcasting that is set to exemplify the communication and transmission networking of both nations.

  • The Chief Executive Officer of Prasar Bharati, Shashi Shekhar Vempati and the president of RTA, Rosario Lufrano.
  • The MoU was signed in the presence of the Indian Ambassador to Argentina Dinesh Bhatia.

Elon Musk to acquire Twitter for $44 Billion in 2022:

  • Elon Musk clinched a deal to buy Twitter Inc. for $44 billion cash in a transaction that will shift control of the social media platform populated by millions of users and global leaders to the world’s richest person.
  • It is a seminal moment for the 16-year-old company, which emerged as one of the world’s most influential public squares and now faces a string of challenges.
  • According to Twitter, the publicly traded corporation will now become a private entity owned by Musk, who negotiated a $54.20 per-share purchase price.
  • Musk secured $46.5 billion in funding last week to complete the deal, and Dan Ives, an analyst at Wedbush Securities, predicted earlier in the day that the board would likely approve his offer because no other buyer could be found.
  • Twitter stock was trading 5.9% higher on Wall Street.

Andrey Rublev defeated Novak Djokovic: Serbia Open title:

  • Andrey Rublev defeated Novak Djokovic 6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-0 to win the Serbia Open for his third title of the season.
  • The second-seeded Russian player dug deep to stop Djokovic from mounting another comeback as he prevented the top-ranked Serb from claiming his first title of 2022.
  • Andrey Rublev has saved five set points in the second set to force a tie-break, but he was unable to prevent Djokovic from levelling the match.
  • Rublev has now equalled Rafael Nadal (Spain) for the most tour-level titles in 2022.
  • He also clinched crowns in Marseille and Dubai in February 2022.

  • The coffee table book “The Magic of Mangalajodi” presents a bird’s eye perspective of Mangalajodi in Chilika Lake through numerous photographs and explanations.
  • Sikh History of Eastern India is a result of the meticulous research work on Sikh history and philosophy by Abinash Mohapatra.

Former Kenyan president Kibaki dies at 90:

  • Former Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki has died at the age of 90.
  • Kibaki served two terms as president of the East African country, ruling from 2002 to 2013.
  • But the 2007-2008 election violence after a disputed vote was the worst in the country’s history and the lowest point of his presidency.
  • Not only were more than 1,200 lives lost but more than half a million people were forced from their homes.
  • During the violence there were hundreds of rapes and more than 100,000 properties were destroyed, according to the International Criminal Court (ICC).
  • It charged leading politicians with orchestrating the violence but neither Mr Kibaki nor opposition leader Raila Odinga was among them.

Noted Padma Shri writer Binapani Mohanty passes away:

  • Legendary Odia writer Binapani Mohanty died at her residence in Cuttack due to age-related complications.
  • Mohanty, a Padma Shri awardee, was
  • Mohanty has more than 100 books to her credit.
  • She is well-known for Patadei, Kasturi Mriga O Sabuja Aranya, Khela Ghara, Naiku Rasta, Bastraharana, Andhakarara.
  • Also an academician, she taught Economics at the Sailabala Women’s College.
  • Her literary career as a storyteller began with the publication of ‘Gotie Ratira Kahani’ in 1960.
  • The collection of short stories ‘Patadei’ won her Sahitya Akademi in 1990.
  • Its Hindi dramatisation ‘Kashmakash’, telecast on Doordarshan, in the late 1980s was a hit. Her works have been translated into English, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi and Bengali, among others.
