12th National Voters’ Day to be celebrated on January 25, 2022                   

  • The National Voters’ Day is celebrated on 25 January every year in India to encourage the country’s voters to participate in the electoral process.
  • 2022 marks the 12th National Voters’ Day (NVD).
  • The theme of 2022 NVD is, ‘Making Elections Inclusive, Accessible and Participative’.

Objective :

  • To spread awareness about the importance of voting in a democracy and it also educates people about their voting rights.

Participants :

  • Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu will be the Chief Guest for the event.
  • Minister for Law and Justice Kiren Rijiju will be the Guest of Honor.

Key Features :

  • During the event, National Awards for the Best Electoral Practises for the year 2021-22 will be given to state and district level officers for their outstanding performance in the conduct of elections in different areas.
  • On the other hand, the newly enrolled voters will be handed over the EPIC during the event.
  • The Election Commission’s Publication ‘Leap of Faith: Journey of Indian Elections’ will be released on the occasion.
  • Publication ‘Pledging to Vote – A Decadal Journey of The National Voters Day in India’ will also be launched.
  • A national voter awareness contest on social media- ‘My Vote is my Future- Power of One Vote’ will also be launched.

  • Since 2011, National Voters’ Day has been celebrated on 25th January every year, all across the country to mark the foundation day of the ECI on Jan 25, 1950.

National Tourism Day 2022 : January 25       

  • Every year, 25th January is observed in India as the National Tourism Day, an incredible practice to spread awareness of the importance for traveling and protecting nature.

  2. The theme for National Tourism Day 2022 is “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.

Ministry of Electronics & IT releases 2nd Volume of Vision Document on  Electronics Manufacturing

  • The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, in association with India Cellular & Electronics Association (ICEA) released a 5-year roadmap and Vision Document for the electronics sector, titled “$300 bn Sustainable Electronics Manufacturing & Exports by 2026.
  • This roadmap is the second volume of a two-part Vision Document – the first of which titled “Increasing India’s Electronics Exports and Share in GVCs” was released in November 2021.
  • The report provides a year-wise break-up and production projections for the various products that will lead India’s transformation into a USD 300 billion electronics manufacturing powerhouse, from the current USD 75 billion.
  • New markets, new customers and being a player in the Global Value Chain (GVC) is the goal and mission of the second phase.

Ministry of Culture organized Rangoli Utsav ‘Umang’ to celebrate National Girl Child Day

  • On the Occasion of  National Girl Child Day, the Ministry of Culture organized the ‘Umang Rangoli Utsav’ on 24th January 2022.
  • The participants drew rangoli decorations on the roads and squares named after the female freedom fighters or the female role models of the country.
  • The rangoli decorations were made at more than 70 locations in 19 states.
  • The event celebrated ‘Girl Child Day’ and ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ together to appreciate the contributions of women to the journey of a progressive India@75.
  • The event also raised awareness about the initiatives such as ‘BetiBachao, BetiPadhao’, ‘BetiZindabaad’ etc.
  • It reminds everybody to close the gender gap and give every girl child the equal opportunity to grow, have dreams and fulfill them.
  • Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ is an initiative of the Government of India to celebrate and commemorate 75 years of progressive India and the glorious history of its people, culture, and achievements.

29 children conferred Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar 2022

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi conferred the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar (PMRBR) award to 29 children from across the country ahead of Republic Day.

  • A total of 15 Boys and 14 Girls among the awardees belong to 21 States and UTs.

  • The ceremony took place on the occasion of National Girl Child Day and as a part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
  • Union Women and Child Development Minister Smt Smriti Zubin Irani and Munjpara Mahendrabhai, Minister of State was among those present on the occasion.
  • During the function, Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi gave digital certificates to the 61 winners of PMRBP 2021 and 2022 using a Block Chain-driven technology developed by IIT Kanpur under the National Blockchain Project.

About Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar :

  • The Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar has two categories:
  • Bal Shakti Puraskar, awarded to Indian citizens under the age of 18 for outstanding achievement in Innovation, Scholastic achievements, Social service, Arts and culture, Bravery, Sports.
  • Bal Kalyan Puraskar, to individuals or organizations that have made outstanding contributions in child development, child protection, or child welfare.
  • The award conferred by the President of India in the week preceding Republic Day, 26 January, in the Durbar Hall of Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.

CCI imposes penalty on maritime transport companies for indulging in cartelization:

  • The Competition Commission of India (CCI) passed a final order against four maritime transport companies namely Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (‘NYK Line’), Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha Ltd. (‘K-Line’), Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd. (‘MOL’) and Nissan Motor Car Carrier Company (‘NMCC’) for indulging in cartelization in the provision of maritime motor vehicle transport services to automobile Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) for various trade routes.
  • Amongst these four companies, NYK Line, MOL and NMCC were lesser penalty applicants before CCI.
  • As three companies filed lesser penalty applications, the Commission gave benefit of reduction in penalty by 100% to NYK Line and its individuals, 50% to MOL and its individuals and 30% to NMCC and its individuals.
  • Accordingly, the Commission directed K-Line, MOL and NMCC to pay penalties to the tune of approx. INR 24.23 crores, INR 10.12 crores and INR 28.69 crores respectively, besides passing a cease-and-desist order.

India announces 2 lakh US dollar immediate relief assistance to Tonga in wake of tsunami:

  • India has announced two lakh US dollar immediate relief assistance to Tonga in the wake of tsunami.
  • On January 15, a tsunami hit the Kingdom of Tonga impacting large sections of the country’s population and causing significant infrastructural damage.
  • A close friend and partner under the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) and as a gesture of solidarity with the friendly people of Tonga, Government has extended an immediate relief assistance of two lakh US dollar to support relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts.
  • India has firmly stood by Tonga during times of crisis and devastation caused by natural disasters, as during Cyclone Gita in 2018.
  • Disaster Risk Reduction and Management is an important pillar of India’s Indo-Pacific Oceans’ Initiative (IPOI) announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in November 2019.

Indian Embassy in Berlin opens exhibition on Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose to mark his 125th birth anniversary:

  • Indian Embassy in Berlin celebrated Parakram Diwas by opening a special exhibition titled “Bose 125” marking 125th birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.
  • Ambassador of India to Germany Harish Parvathaneni and Netaji’s daughter, Professor Anita Bose Pfaff inaugurated the exhibition at the Embassy which includes rare, personal letters and memorabilia from Netaji.
  • Dr Bose Pfaff, an Overseas Citizen of India, expressed deep appreciation for the Government of India’s decision to commence Republic Day celebrations with Netaji’s birth anniversary and conveyed her greetings to people of India on this joyous occasion.
  • Ambassador of India, in his remarks stated that India would be eternally indebted to Netaji Bose for his role in the freedom struggle and the Independence of India.

India, Israel launches commemorative logo to mark 30th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic ties:

  • India and Israel have launched a commemorative logo to mark the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries.
  • The logo was unveiled virtually at an online event in the presence of Ambassador of Israel to India Naor Gilon and Indian envoy to Israel, Sanjeev Singla.
  • The logo features the Star of David and the Ashoka Chakra– the two symbols that adorn the national flags of both countries- and forms the numeral 30 depicting the 30th anniversary of bilateral relations.
  • India is proud to mark the 30th anniversary of its bilateral relations with Israel and look forward to using the special logo throughout the year to celebrate this special milestone.
  • India and Israel are two ancient people, proud of their cultural heritage, and two vibrant democracies, eager to grasp the future.
  • Israel and India established diplomatic relations on 29th of January 1992.

One District One Product’ (ODOP) initiative of Centre churning big success stories in J & K, North East , Uttar Pradesh:

  • One District One Product (ODOP) Initiative – a State Conference was held on 21st January, 2022 by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, Ministry of Commerce & Industry.
  • The Conference was chaired by SumitaDawra, Additional Secretary, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) and was attended by Principal Secretaries and other key officers of the Industries Departments of all States.
  • This was followed by a deep dive into the ‘Changing Narratives for the Manufacturing Sector in Jammu & Kashmir’ by Shri. Ranjan Prakash Thakur, Principal Secretary Industries, Jammu & Kashmir.
  • Herein, the ODOP Initiative’s work in Jammu & Kashmir especially its successes in trade facilitation for walnuts and apples was discussed.
  • The ODOP initiative’s facilitation of Jammu & Kashmir’s representation at the Dubai Expo 2020 and successful buyer-seller meets as well as focused trade discussions conducted therein were also highlighted.
  • The rest of the states would also soon be facilitated to participate in events at an international level.

BSF to launch boat ambulance service in Malkangiri, Odisha:

  • Border Security Force (BSF) will start boat ambulance service from Swabhiman Anchal zone in Malkangiri district of Odisha on the occasion of Republic Day.
  • BSF Additional Director General S. Bhatti, the Border Security Force is playing an important role in anti-Maoist operations in Chhattisgarh and Odisha, besides strengthening the sense of security amongst the local citizens and facilitating development activities in LWE areas.
  • BSF organized forty-six medical camps last year in Kanker and Narayanpur districts of Chhattisgarh and the interior areas of Malkangiri and Koraput districts of Odisha.
  • Along with this, essential commodities worth about three crore rupees were also made available to the people living in rural areas of these districts.
  • Apart from this, BSF organized a tour to various historical and cultural places of the country for more than two hundred and fifty tribal boys and girls of Chhattisgarh and Odisha last year under the Tribal Youth Exchange Program.

NHPC contributes Rs. 1 Crore to Chief Minister Relief Fund (CMRF), Himachal Pradesh:

  • K. Singh, CMD, NHPC handed over payment intimation advice of Rupees One Crore to Jai Ram Thakur, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh as NHPC’s contribution towards Chief Minister Relief Fund (CMRF) at Shimla (HP).
  • This fund is used when natural calamities or tragedy strike the State & is provided to affected residents for immediate relief to minimize the grief & loss of the people.
  • It is also utilized for humanitarian purposes in adverse circumstances.
  • The Chief Minister asked CMD, NHPC to expedite works related to 500 MW Dugar Hydroelectric Project (HP) & assured his support to NHPC in various clearances towards the early implementation of the Project.
  • The Chief Minister also asked NHPC to take up Pumped Storage Projects in the state.
  • During the meeting, Ram Subhag Singh, Chief Secretary, Govt. of Himachal Pradesh was also present.

  • Hitachi Payment Services and Indipaisa have tied up to develop a new Fintech platform for India’s MSMEs.
  • In partnership with Hitachi Payment Services, Indipaisa will offer a range of payment solutions to match the specific needs of Indian MSME owners and operators, to help them grow their businesses, comply with government tax laws, and build a better future for themselves and their families
  • The objective is to offer a high-quality digital platform for fintech services at affordable prices for Indian MSME market.

Swiggy turns decacorn with $10.7-billion valuation

  • Food delivery platform Swiggy has signed a $700 million (nearly Rs 5,225 crore) funding round led by asset manager Invesco.
  • With this, the total valuation of Swiggy has reached $10.7 billion, almost doubling it from the $5.5 billion valuation during the $1.25 billion fund raise in July 2021.
  • The investment makes Bengaluru-based Swiggy the fourth decacorn, a privately-held firm valued at $10 billion or more, to emerge from India after fintech Paytm, hotel aggregator Oyo and ed-tech firm Byju’s.
  • The $700-million round was led by Invesco, with participation from new investors such as Baron Capital Group, Sumeru Venture, IIFL AMC Late Stage Tech Fund, Kotak, Axis Growth Avenues AIF- I, Sixteenth Street Capital, Ghisallo, Smile Group and Segantii Capital.
  • Existing investors Alpha Wave Global (formerly Falcon Edge Capital), Qatar Investment Authority, and ARK Impact, along with its long-term investor Prosus, also participated in the round.

Dredging Corp signs MoU for strategic alliance with Abu Dhabi’s NMDC:

  • Dredging Corporation of India Ltd (DCI) and Abu Dhabi’s National Marine Dredging Company (NMDC) have formed a strategic alliance to bid jointly for projects using each other’s resources, equipment and knowhow in the Indian sub-continent, Africa, Middle East and Far East regions.
  • A memorandum of understanding on the strategic alliance was signed between the two firms.
  • The strategic alliance will cover capital dredging works, project development on build–operate–transfer (BOT) basis, operate ports as managers, participate in public-private partnership (PPP) projects in dredging works in accordance with the dredging policy of the government, port development, operations and management, reclamation works and development of multi-modal transportation.

Flipkart signs MoU with IIT Delhi unit for research on social commerce:

  • Flipkart has announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT), the industry interface organisation of the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-D) as a part of its ongoing Industry-academia collaboration program to research on social commerce and product recommendations to resellers.
  • As part of the MoU, Flipkart will offer research grants and market insights to FITT to develop hands-on prototypes and publish research papers in collaboration with the teams at Flipkart in the areas of social commerce, product recommendation to resellers, and the consumer product exploration journey.
  • IIT-D will be working closely with Flipkart on research projects to solve technical challenges in the e-commerce domain.
  • Flipkart and FITT will also undertake a number of other initiatives, including organising seminars, offering conference travel grants and internship and mentorship opportunities.
  • Flipkart has been growing its academic collaboration program for the past five years.

Government appoints Vinodanand Jha as new chairperson to PMLA Adjudicating Authority

  1. Vinodanand Jha, a 1983-batch retired IRS officer has been appointed as the chairperson of the PMLA Adjudicating Authority , New Delhi.
  2. An order issued by the Union Finance Ministry, Jha’s appointment to the post of chairperson will be till the completion of his tenure on June 22, 2023.

  • Vinodanand Jha (IRS) appointed as Member from the field of Finance/Accountancy in the Adjudicating Authority under Prevention of Money Laundering Act 2002.
  • He has served as a Chief Commissioner, Income Tax.
  • He was appointed to this post after he retired from service as the principal chief commissioner of Income Tax in Pune,Maharashtra.
  • The three-member Authority is mandated to adjudicate the cases of attachment of assets orders issued under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
  • It ordered for its continuity and further confiscation or release, considering the merits of the investigation.

  • The Competition Commission of India (CCI) approves acquisition by GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare Overseas Limited and GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare UK Trading Limited (Acquirers) of shareholding in GlaxoSmithKline Asia Private Limited (Target) under Section 31(1) of the Competition Act, 2002.
  • The Proposed Combination involves collective acquisition of 100% shares of the Target by the Acquirers.
  • Prior to the proposed combination, GSKAPL will acquire the trademarks pertaining to
  • “Iodex” and “Ostocalcium” brands in India alongwith the legal, economic, commercial and marketing rights of such brands and other associated assets (GSK Consumer Brands) from GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals Limited.
  • GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare Overseas Limited is a wholly-owned subsidiary of GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare Holdings (No.2) Limited (“GSK CH HoldCo”).
  • GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare UK Trading Limited is a part of the overall GSK group and is a wholly-owned subsidiary of GSK CH HoldCo.

Eminent archeologist & Padma Bhushan R. Nagaswamy passes away

  • Renowned archeologist and Tamil Nadu archeology department’s first director, Padma Bhushan R. Nagaswamy passed away at the age of 91.

About R. Nagaswamy :

  • Ramachandran Nagaswamy born on 10 August 1930 in Kodumudi, Erode, TamilNadu.
  • He was an Indian historian, archeologist and epigraphist who was known for his work on temple inscriptions and art history of Tamil Nadu.
  • Nagaswamy became the first director of the Tamil Nadu government’s Department of Archeology in 1966.
  • He was also instrumental in starting the annual Chidambaram Natyanjali festival in 1980.
  • He was a consultant for the Central government in the Documentation of Cultural property, Thanjavur Brahadisvara Project (UNDP programme), according to the Tamil Arts Academy, Nagaswamy’s webpage.
  • He was an expert witness in a London court in the famous Pathur Nataraja case and played a key role in bringing back the Chola-era bronze Nataraja to Tamil Nadu.
  • He founded the Institute of Epigraphy and Archeology in 1973 in the government department.
  • A noted scholar, researcher and art historian, he has published many books including the ‘Masterpieces of Early South Indian Bronzes.’
  • He has written over 40 books in Tamil, English and Sanskrit and published over 100 books through the department.
  • As an archeologist, he had excavated many sites in Tamil Nadu, including Korkai, the ancient Pandyan port.

Awards & Honors :

  • Nagaswamy was awarded the “Kalaimamani” award by the Government of Tamil Nadu for his groundbreaking work on Sekkilar’s Periyapuranam.
  • He was awarded the prestigious Padma Bhushan in 2018 for his outstanding contribution to archeology.
