International Day to Combat Islamophobia- March 15:

  • As the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution to proclaim March 15 as International Day to Combat Islamophobia, India expressed concern over phobia against one religion being elevated to the level of an international day, saying there are growing contemporary forms of religiophobia, especially anti-Hindu, anti-Buddhist and anti-Sikh phobias.
  • The main objective of International Day to Combat Islamophobia will be curtailing systematic hate speech and discrimination against Muslims; respect for religious symbols and practices; along with the elimination of all forms of intolerance and discrimination based on religion or belief.
  • The 193-member UN General Assembly adopted a resolution, introduced by Pakistan’s ambassador Munir Akram under agenda item Culture of peace, to proclaim March 15 as the International Day to Combat Islamophobia.

Govt issues draft notification on Inter-County Non-Transport (personal) Vehicle rules, 2022:

  • The Government has issued a draft notification on Inter-County Non-Transport (personal) Vehicle rules, 2022.
  • According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the rules are proposed to formalize the movement of personal vehicles registered in other countries when entering or plying in the territory of India.
  • According to the draft notification, motor vehicles registered in countries other than India shall not be permitted to transport local passengers and goods within India.
  • Motor vehicles registered in any country other than India requires to comply with rules and regulations made under Section 118 of Motor Vehicles Act 1988 of India.

Nitin Gadkari has launched Green Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle Toyota Mirai:

  • Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has launched the world’s most advanced technology-developed Green Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle Toyota Mirai in New Delhi.
  • It is an important initiative in promoting clean energy and protecting the environment by reducing dependence on fossil fuels and thereby making India ‘Energy Self-reliant’ by 2047.
  • Union Ministers Hardeep Singh Puri, RK Singh, and Mahendra Nath Pandey including Toyota Kirloskar Motor Managing Director Masakazu Yoshimura and Vice-Chairman Vikram Kirloskar were also present at the launch.
  • Road Transport Ministry, Toyota Kirloskar Motor and International Center for Automotive Technology are conducting a Pilot Project to study and evaluate the world’s most advanced Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle Toyota Mirai which runs on hydrogen, on Indian roads and climatic conditions.

  • The country’s first Digital Water Bank ‘AQVERIUM’ was launched in
  • It is formed by AquaKraft Group Ventures, next-generation sustainability, and impact enterprise focused on providing clean drinking water & sanitation.
  • Clean Water & Water security is the key for India to become a USD 5 trillion economy, Narayana told that the Indian water & sanitation market opportunity which was pegged at USD 297 billion is highly unorganized and the need of the hour is a comprehensive 360 degrees approach towards water management as a blend of green & sustainable treatment technologies.

Mumbai becomes first South Asian city to detail net-zero roadmap:

  • Mumbai announced detailed plans to zero out carbon emissions by 2050, a target that puts it two decades ahead of India’s national goal and makes it the first city in South Asia to set such a timeline
  • India’s financial center, home to south Asia’s biggest corporations, stock bourses and the central bank, has proposed exhaustive changes to the way it manages energy, water, air, waste, green spaces and transport for its 19 million residents.
  • Without intervention, the effects of climate change could cost India $35 trillion over the next 50 years.

India Needs 1.3 to 1.5 billion Tonnes of Coal by 2030:

  • As per Economic Survey, the demand for coal is expected to remain in the range of 1.3-1.5 billion tonnes by 2030.
  • Coal is the most important and abundant fossil fuel in India and accounts for 55% of the country’s energy need.
  • Commercial primary energy consumption in India has grown by about 700% in the last four decades.
  • The current per capita commercial primary energy consumption in India is about 350 kgoe/year.
  • Coal is not only the primary source of energy in the country but is also used as an intermediary by many industries such as steel, sponge iron, cement, paper, brick-kilns etc.

India’s Maternal Mortality Ratio witnesses a remarkable drop by 10 points:

  • India’s Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) has dropped by 10 points, which is a notable achievement.
  • From 113 in 2016-18 to 103 in 2017-19, this ratio has decreased, witnessing an 8.8 % decline.
  • MMR has gradually decreased in the country, falling from 130 in 2014-2016 to 122 in 2015-17, 113 in 2016-18, and 103 in 2017-19.
  • The mentioned data have been sourced from the Registrar General of India’s Special Bulletin.
  • The maternal mortality ratio is a key indicator for the improvement in the performance of the initiatives being taken for the health and safety of the mothers as she prepares to conceive.
  • The number of states that have met the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) objective has increased from five to seven, as follows: Kerala (30), Maharashtra (38), Telangana (56), Tamil Nadu (58), Andhra Pradesh (58), Jharkhand (61), and Gujarat are the states with the highest number of people (70).
  • There are now nine (9) states that have met the NHP’s MMR objective, including the seven mentioned above as well as the states of Karnataka (83) and Haryana (96).

  • Minister of Higher Education, Electronics, IT-BT, S&T and Skill Development Dr C N Aswath Narayan launched the Women@Work (W@W) programme.

Aim :

  1. To provide 5 lakh jobs within 2026 to women with necessary employable skills.
  2. The W@W Program is being organized jointly by Karnataka Digital Economy Mission (KDEM), KTECH and Karnataka Skill Development Corporation, Government of Karnataka.

Morgan Stanley projects India’s GDP growth forecast to 7.9% for fiscal 2022-23                                           

  • US investment bank and financial services company Morgan Stanley has trimmed India’s economic growth forecast by 50 basis points to 7.9% for the fiscal year 2022-23.
  • Furthermore, Stanley raised the country’s retail inflation estimate to 6%, meanwhile, current account deficits are seen to widen by 3% of GDP.
  • This is 50 bps less than its earlier projection due to the impact of the Russia-Ukraine conflict on oil prices.

Gabriel Boric inaugurated as youngest president of Chile

  • Gabriel Boric Font, a 36-year-old leftist politician has been elected as the new and 36th President of Chile.
  • He is the youngest leader to hold the office in Chile’s history & he will hold the office for the period between 2022-2026.
  • Gabriel Boric Font succeeds Sebastián Piñera.

  • Boric studied in the Faculty of Law at the University of Chile, and was the president of the University of Chile Student Federation from 2011 to 2012.

Bhagwant Singh Mann takes oath as Punjab CM

  • Aam Aadmi Party leader Bhagwant Mann was sworn in as the Punjab Chief Minister at a mega event in Punjab’s Khatkar Kalan, the ancestral village of legendary freedom fighter Bhagat Singh in Nawanshahr (Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar) district, Punjab.
  • Mr Mann was administered the oath by Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit.
  • The AAP registered a landslide victory in recently concluded Punjab Assembly polls, winning 92 seats, pushing most of its rivals to the margins.
  • Congress won 18 seats in the 117-member Assembly.

  • Union Minister of Labour and Employment, Environment, Forest and Climate Change Shri Bhupender Yadav presented Vishwakarma Rashtriya Puraskar (VRP), National Safety Awards (NSA) for the performance year 2018 and National Safety Awards (Mines) [NSA (Mines)] for the contest  years 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020.
  • For the performance year 2018, total 96 awards were given whereas in the case of NSA, a total 141 number of (80 winners & 61 runners-up) awards were given.

  • Adani Solar and Smart Power India (SPI), a subsidiary of Rockefeller Foundation, have signed a non-financial and non-commercial memorandum of understanding for equitable access to last-mile electricity and to encourage energy transition in rural India.

Objective of MoU :

  • To promote the utilization of solar rooftop panels and obtain 5 MW of solar deployment by means of Adani Solar’s channel companions in rural and peri-urban areas of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha.

Goal :

  • To help inclusive financial progress and construct resilient communities.
  • To develop the ecosystem to scale and replicate sustainable companies that present renewable vitality for productive use and develop the financial exercise to underserved, rural areas in India.
  • The preliminary section would begin with round 5 channel companions in UP adopted by deployment in different states.

BRO signs MoU with GRSE for construction of 27 double-lane class 70 modular bridges in border areas

  • Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) Ltd signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for fabrication, supply, erection and launching of 27 carriageway double lane galvanised modular bridges of5 meters with Indian Road Congress (IRC) Load Class 70.
  • The deal, which is worth around Rs 60 crore, was signed by Director General BR Lt General Rajeev Chaudhry and Officiating Chairman & Managing Director of GRSE Commodore P R Hari IN (Retd) in New Delhi.
  • The BRO had successfully trial evaluated an “Indigenous 140 feet Double Lane Modular Bridge”, supplied by GRSE Ltd in 2021.
  • The first of its kind indigenous bridge was dedicated to the Nation by Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh.
  • The bridge was constructed on important “Flag Hill-Dokala” Road in Sikkim at an altitude of 11,000 feet by Karamyogis of Project Swastik in February 2021.
  • The construction of such modular bridges with IRC Load Class 70 classification will also enhance the operational preparedness of the security forces in the forward areas.

Welspun One signs agreement with Haryana government to set up warehouse, invest Rs 1,500 crore

  • Welspun One Logistics Parks (WOLP), part of the $2.7 billion Welspun Group, has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Haryana to develop large-scale warehousing facilities across the state.

Aim :

  • To capitalize on the available government land parcels in order to develop Group A warehousing facilities across important micro-markets.
  • The company will invest Rs 1500 crore in Haryana.
  • The development potential of the projects through this agreement will be around 5 million square feet in 3-4 years and it will help create more than 4,500 jobs.

Motor Vessel Ram Prasad Bismil becomes longest vessel ever to sail on Brahmaputra river           

  • The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has achieved a landmark when the motor vessel (MV) Ram Prasad Bismil became the longest vessel ever to sail on the Brahmaputra river.
  • The 90 meters long flotilla is 26 meters wide, loaded with a draft of 2.1 meters, successfully completed the aspiring pilot run of heavy cargo movement from Haldia Dock in Kolkata after it anchored at Pandu port in Guwahati.
  • The vessel along with two barges DB Kalpana Chawla and DB APJ Abdul Kalam were flagged off from the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Haldia by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways (PSW) and AYUSH, Sarbananda Sonowal flagged them off on February 16.
  • The significance of this pilot run lays down the path for commencement of barging operations from Kolkata to Guwahati via Indo Bangladesh Protocol Route (IBRP).
  • The consignment – loaded with 1,793 MT of Steel rods from Tata Steel in Jamshedpur had a requirement of draft of0 meters.
  • The Government of India along with Government of People’s Republic of Bangladesh funded the dredging of this stretch with 80:20 ratio respectively.
  • The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) as well as Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) worked together on this historic cargo movement.
  • Earlier MV Lal Bahadur Shastri carried a consignment of 200 MT foodgrains for Food Corporation of India (FCI) from Patna to Pandu, successfully completing the Pilot Movement cargo between Ganga, the National Waterway 1 (NW1), and Brahmaputra, the National Waterway 2 (NW2).

Petascale supercomputer “PARAM Ganga” established at IIT Roorkee

  • The National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) has deployed ‘PARAM Ganga’, a supercomputer at IIT Roorkee, with a supercomputing capacity of 66 Petaflops.
  • The system is designed and commissioned by C-DAC under phase-2 of the build approach of the NSM.
  • The facility was inaugurated by BVR Mohan Reddy, chairman, board of governors, IIT Roorkee.

Aim :

  • To provide computational power to the user community of IIT Roorkee and neighboring academic institutions

About NSM :

  • The National Supercomputing Mission (NSM), which is being steered jointly by ministry of electronics and information technology (MeiTY) and the department of science and technology (DST) and implemented by centre for development of advanced computing (C-DAC) and Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore.
  • The mission plans to build and deploy 24 facilities with cumulative compute power of more than 64 petaflops.
  • At present C-DAC has deployed 11 systems at IISc, IITs, IISER Pune, JNCASR, NABI-Mohali and C-DAC under NSM Phase-1 and Phase-2 with a cumulative compute power of more than 20 petaflops.

  • Jasprit Bumrah and Dimuth Karunaratne have made significant gains in the latest ICC Test Rankings, following their impressive performances in the recently concluded India-Sri Lanka Test series.
  • Jasprit Bumrah, who bagged eight wickets, jumped up six spots to attain fourth ranking in the ICC Test Rankings for bowlers.
  • In the batting charts, Sri Lanka Test captain Dimuth Karunaratne jumped up to a career-best No.5 after his fighting 107 in the second innings in Bangalore.
  • Virat Kohli, however, slipped to the ninth spot.

Former Andhra Pradesh Governor ‘Ms Kumudben Joshi’ passes away:

  • The former Governor of Andhra Pradesh, Kumudben Manishankar Joshi has passed away.
  • She was 88.
  • Joshi served as the Governor of Andhra Pradesh from 26 November 1985 to 7 February 1990.
  • She was the second female Governor of the state after Sharda Mukherjee.
  • Joshi had been a member of the Rajya Sabha thrice.
  • She was the second female Governor of the state after Sharda Mukherjee.
  • Kumudben Manishankar Joshi also became Deputy Minister of information and Broadcasting and Deputy Minister of Health and Family Welfare.

WWE legend Scott Hall a.k.a Razor Ramon passes away at age 63:

  • Former wrestler Scott Hall, better known as Razor Ramon, passed away at the age of 63.
  • He ended up in him suffering three heart attacks.
  • His tenure with World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE) began in May 1992. With WWE, he was famously known by his ring name as ‘Razor Ramon’.
  • He went on to become a four-time WWE Intercontinental champion.
  • In 2014, Scott Hall was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame as an individual wrestler and then again in 2020 as part of NWO.
  • Scott Hall is a two-time world champ with WWC Universal Heavyweight Championship and the USWA Unified World Heavyweight Championship.
