Global Recycling Day: 18th March:

  • Global Recycling Day, celebrated on March 18 every year, is a recycling initiative that encourages us to look at our trash in a new light.
  • Theme for 2022 is “recycling fraternity”.
  • The theme recognise the people who put themselves on the frontline to collect waste and recycling during the multiple lockdowns.
  • There are several ways to recycle that allow some materials to be reused multiple times.
  • Recycling is great for us and the environment because it lessens the energy we use, enhances the quality of water and air we breathe, and combats climate change.
  • The Global Recycling Day was created in 2018 by the London-based Global Recycling Foundation to promote the concept and practice of recycling.

World Sleep Day 2022:

  • The World Sleep Day is held every year on the Friday before Spring Vernal Equinox.
  • In 2022, the World Sleep Day falls on March 18, 2022.
  • The theme of 2022 is ‘Quality Sleep, Sound Mind, Happy World’.
  • The World Sleep Society first observed World Sleep Day in 2008 and it has been observed annually since then.
  • It was started by committed members of the medical community and healthcare professionals who work and study in the field of sleep medicine and research.

Defence Minister inaugurates Flight Control System Integration complex in Bengaluru:

  • Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh inaugurated a seven-storeyed Flight Control System (FCS) Integration facility at Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), a laboratory of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in Bengaluru,
  • The state-of-the-art complex has been constructed in record 45 days, with in-house hybrid technology consisting of conventional, pre-engineered and precast methodology.
  • The technology has been developed by DRDO with the help of M/s Larsen & Toubro (L&T).
  • Design check and technical support has been provided by the teams of IIT Madras and IIT Roorkee.
  • This FCS facility will support Research & Development (R&D) activities for developing Avionics for Fighter Aircraft and FCS for Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft being undertaken by ADE, Bengaluru.
  • This energy is of technology, commitment, institutional collaboration among public sector, private sector & academia and above all of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ as envisioned by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi
  • The complex will also provide simulator training to the pilots of combat aircraft.

Union Minister Giriraj Singh releases Disaster Management Plan of Ministry of Panchayati Raj:

  • Panchayati Raj Minister Giriraj Singh has released disaster management and mitigation activities at grassroots level.
  • The union minister underlined that the involvement of the community is the key factor in any disaster preparedness strategy and active participation of the community is vital to carry out and sustain the activities relating to disaster management in rural areas.
  • The Plan will also establish a framework to align the disaster management measures in rural areas to that of the National Disaster Management Authority.

Department of Consumer Affairs celebrating ‘Consumer Empowerment Week’ and Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav:

  • The Department of Consumer Affairs is celebrating the “Consumer Empowerment Week” from 14th March, 2022 to commemorate 75 years of progressive India and the glorious history of its people, culture and achievements as a part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
  • Under the celebrations of Iconic Week, seven programmes are being conducted by various departments of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
  • In addition to this, all branch offices of BIS have also conducted 41 Rural Outreach Programmes on 14 March, 2022 to mark the beginning of the iconic week.
  • For this purpose, each of the branch offices has nominated a Nodal Officer and also has identified a village under their jurisdiction for conducting this programme.

PM Modi has inaugurated centenary year celebrations of Mathrubhumi:

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the year-long celebrations of the centenary year of Malayalam Daily, Mathrubhumi through video conferencing.
  • Mathrubhumi is a key part of the glorious tradition of newspapers and periodicals founded all across India to unify the people of our nation against colonial rule.
  • Mathrubhumi started functioning on 18th March in 1923.
  • It has been at the forefront of pushing across social reforms and developmental agenda, while constantly highlighting issues of national interest.
  • Mathrubhumi has 15 editions and 11 periodicals.
  • Also, the Mathrubhumi Books division publishes titles on a wide range of issues of contemporary interest.

IFSCA Announces Winners of Hackathon Sprint03: InsureTech under I-Sprint’21:

  • International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA), in its endeavour to support a World Class FinTech Hub at GIFT IFSC, had launched I-Sprint’21, the global FinTech Hackathon as part of InFinity Forum 2021 (https://www.infinityforum.in/).
  • InFinity Forum is IFSCA’s flagship financial technology event, uniting the world’s leading minds in policy, business, and technology to explore and advance the biggest ideas in FinTech, and to develop those ideas into global solutions and opportunities.
  • “Sprint03:InsureTech” under the banner of I-Sprint’21 was launched with a focus on Insurance Sector and was hosted by IFSCA and GIFT city in collaboration with FICCI.
  • The Partners to the Hackathon were ICICI Lombard, Max Life, iCreate, India Insure-Tech Association and Invest-India.
  • This Hackathon was open to all eligible FinTechs from across the globe and was one of its kind being backed by a financial sector Regulator.

A Future Ready Railway System: Indian Railways National Rail Plan 2030:

  • Indian Railways have prepared a National Rail Plan (NRP) for India – 2030.
  • The Plan is to create a ‘future ready’ Railway system by 2030.
  • The NRP is aimed to formulate strategies based on both operational capacities and commercial policy initiatives to increase modal share of the Railways in freight to 45%.
  • The objective of the Plan is to create capacity ahead of demand, which in turn would also cater to future growth in demand right up to 2050 and also increase the modal share of Railways to 45% in freight traffic and to continue to sustain it. 
  • 58 Super critical Projects of a total length of 3750 kms costing 39,663 Crore and 68 Critical Projects of a total length of 6913 kms costing ₹75,736 Crore, have been identified for completion by 2024.

The key objectives of the National Rail Plan are:-

  • Formulate strategies based on both operational capacities and commercial policy initiatives to increase modal share of the Railways in freight to 45%.
  • Reduce transit time of freight substantially by increasing average speed of freight trains to 50Kmph.
  • As part of the National Rail Plan, Vision 2024 has been launched for accelerated implementation of certain critical projects by 2024 such as 100% electrification, multi-tracking of congested routes, upgradation of speed to 160 kmph on Delhi-Howrah and Delhi-Mumbai routes, upgradation of speed to 130kmph on all other Golden Quadrilateral-Golden Diagonal (GQ/GD) routes and elimination of all Level Crossings on all GQ/GD route.
  • Identify new Dedicated Freight Corridors.
  • Identify new High Speed Rail Corridors.
  • Assess rolling stock requirement for passenger traffic as well as wagon requirement for freight.
  • Assess Locomotive requirement to meet twin objectives of 100% electrification (Green Energy) and increasing freight modal share.
  • Assess the total investment in capital that would be required along with a periodical break up.
  • Sustained involvement of the Private Sector in areas like operations and ownership of rolling stock, development of freight and passenger terminals, development/operations of track infrastructure etc.

Kashmiri Hand-Knotted Carpets Get QR Code-Based GI Tag                                                 

  • The Jammu and Kashmir government has launched a Geographical Indication (GI) registry for the famed Kashmiri carpet with a quick response (QR) code with details of artisans and the material used.

Purpose :

  • To preserve the authenticity and genuineness of the hand-knotted carpets.

Objective :

  1. To help in reviving the sheen and glory of the Kashmiri carpet industry.
  2. Recently the first ever consignment of GI-tagged hand-knotted carpets were exported to Germany from New Delhi.

About QR code :

  • The QR code will contain relevant information of the artisans, manufacturer, weaver, district, raw material used etc.
  • The QR code label cannot be copied or misused, it will discourage the counterfeit production of carpets.

Note :

  • The Geographical Indication Registry under the Department of Industry Promotion and Internal Trade, Ministry of Commerce and Industry (Govt of India) granted GI Tag to Kashmiri Carpets in June 2016., but the registered carpets were certified from 2022.
  • The Carpet Export Promotion Council (CEPC) in Collaboration with the Directorate of Handicrafts & Handloom, Govt. of Jammu & Kashmir conducted a seminar on ‘Introduction of QR Code based Geographical Indication – GI tag’for Kashmir Hand – Knotted Carpet.

Haryana Chief Minister proposes over Rs 1.77 lakh crore tax-free Budget

  • Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar presented the state budget in the state assembly and proposed a Budget of Rs 1,77,255.99 crore for the year 2022-23.
  • He presented his third Budget in the state Assembly.

Key Highlights :

  • Capital expenditure : ₹ 61,057.36 crore (34.4%)
  • Revenue expenditure : ₹ 1,16,198.36 crore (65.6 )
  • Debt liability : ₹ 2,43,779 crore
  • Revenue receipts : Rs 1,06,424.70 crore
  • Revenue deficit : 9773.93 crore
  • The Fiscal deficit is expected to be at 2.98 per cent of Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) in 2022-23.
  • The state would adopt the “Vajra Model” of growth for Haryana, in which, the state have envisioned five developmental forces for
  1. Enhanced economic growth and human development,
  2. Ease of living for citizens,
  3. Lifting the poor and disadvantaged from all socio-economic groups,
  4. Leveraging productivity through increased adoption of technology accompanied by employment
  5. Entrepreneurship.

Announced 3 funds :

  1. Climate & Sustainable Development Fund to achieve green development objectives,
  2. Research & Innovation Fund (To promote scientific activity and scholarship in universities, other educational institutions, economic enterprises in public, private sectors)
  3. Venture Capital Fund (To promote entrepreneurship and support youth in establishing start-ups in terms of financial assistance as well as developing market linkages)

Awards :

  • Sushma Swaraj Award – Awarded to women of Haryana for making a significant contribution or for remarkable achievements in different walks of life in the national and international sphere.

Schemes :

  • Haryana Matrushakti Scheme – Women from families whose annual income is less than Rs 5 lakh based on Parivar Pehchan Patra verified data.
  • For that to the extent of Rs 3 lakh for which interest subvention of 7 per cent will be provided for three years through the Haryana Women Development Corporation.
  • Sahbhagita scheme – It will be implemented for women in Faridabad, Gurgaon and Panchkula in 2022-23 for working women in large cities who face a problem of safe and affordable housing.
  • Three Mahila Ashrams will be explored through this scheme.

Self help groups :

  • The state has set a target of setting up and supporting 10,000 Self Help Groups in 2022-23.

Agriculture & Allied sectors :

  • For agriculture and allied sectors : Rs 5,988.76 crore
  • The government will support the establishment of 100 pack houses in 2022-23.

Education sector  :

  • Rs 20,250.57 crore have been allocated for 2022-23.

SATHI :

  • Safe and secure transport facilities for girl students (SATHI – Safe and Accessible Transport: Haryana initiative) will be provided to all girl students of government institutions .

Environment, forests and climate change :

  • A total of Rs 530.94 crore have been allocated for the year 2022-23.

Nature trail :

  • A 150-km long nature trail from Kalka to Kalesar will also be established.

Madhya Pradesh Govt Presents Rs 2.79-Lakh-Crore Budget for FY 2022-23

  • Finance minister of Madhya Pradesh, Jagdish Devda, has presented the state budget worth Rs 2.79 lakh crore for 2022-23.
  • No fresh taxes and no hike in existing taxes were provisioned in the budget.
  • The fiscal deficit was Rs 52,511 crore, which is56 per cent of the Gross State Gross Domestic Product (GSDP).

Aim of the budget :

  • To make the Madhya Pradesh ‘Atma-Nirbhar’(Self reliant)
  • For the infrastructure sector covering power, roads and water, among other segments Rs 42,128 crore has been allocated.
  • For education Rs 32,843 crore has been allocated.
  • For the agriculture sector Rs 32,843 crore has been allocated.
  • For health Rs 19,405 crore has been allocated.
  • For the Rural Development Department Rs 21,389 crore was allocated.

Key highlights :

  • For the first time, the state government presented a ‘child budget’ & Rs 17,792 crore has been allotted.
  • Mukhyamantri Teerth Darshan Yojana will be started again.
  • 31 lakh beneficiaries will get the benefits of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, a provision of 10 thousand crores has already been made.
  • A provision of 6,300 crores has also been proposed for the Rural and Urban Jal Jeevan Mission.
  • Industrial parks will be set up at Bagrod and Berasia in Bhopal.
  • Solar plants will be set up in three districts – Sagar, Shajapur, Ujjain.
  • A total of 217 electronic vehicle charging stations will be set up in just three districts of MP – Bhopal, Indore and Jabalpur.
  • A 25,000 crore subsidy has been proposed for electricity consumers.
  • Rs 3500 crore has been allotted for MNREGA.
  • 22 new medical colleges will be set up in Sheopur, Rajgarh, Neemuch, Mandsaur, Mandla, Seoni, Singrauli, Damoh.

Tripura govt announces special scheme for tea workers – Mukhyamantri Chaa Srami Kalyan Prakalpa”

  • The state government of Tripura has announced a special scheme named “Mukhyamantri Chaa Srami Kalyan Prakalpa”  to ensure social security of over 7,000 tea garden workers of Tripura.
  • For the implementation of the scheme the govt has allocated a sum of Rs 85 crore.

About the Scheme :

Key components of the scheme :

  • To provide land or home to farmers for constructing house,
  • To allot land of defunct tea garden on lease basis through Cooperative,
  • To provide drinking water, electricity, shelter, education and healthcare amenities to each and every family,
  • To provide priority group ration card & promote their children to send them in pre-primary to Higher Secondary schools, social pension to all eligible families, social allowance,
  • To offer Maternal and Child Health Care assistance, ensure health insurance as per their ability
  • To provide supportive appliances for handicapped persons,
  • To monitor and coordinate with the managers for providing an eco-friendly environment,
  • To be brought under PMAY.

Additional Info :

  • Tea is being produced through 54 tea estates and 21 tea processing factories across Tripura.
  • The tea production is mainly distributed in North, Sepahijala, Unakoti and West Tripura districts

SBI to set up Innovation, Incubation and Acceleration Centre

  • State Bank of India (SBI) plans to set up an Innovation, Incubation and Acceleration Centre (IIAC) at Hyderabad, Telangana.
  • The centre will be operational in six to nine months of on-boarding a consultant.

Purpose :

  • To bolster its current performance and drive higher top-line growth through innovation.

Objective :

  • To better understand and explore how emerging innovations, market shifts or technologies could impact the bank’s status quo; pursue large-scale initiatives that, once scaled, will redefine the existing business or create a new business unit or division for the bank; and transferring innovation from prototype to project/product that can be monetised by the bank.

Role of the IIAC :

  • The IIAC should help the bank develop a set of technologies, knowledge, and skills to develop new products and services.
  • IIAC should act as a central body to govern and drive fin-tech partnerships and implement change across the bank
  • It should evaluate emerging technologies to stay ahead of the peers, and lead and build future-ready technology foundations.

About Mahila Money Prepaid Card :

  • The Mahila Money Prepaid Card would bridge the gap for community members who want the convenience of a bank account with added flexibility, safety and convenience.
  • It will make it easy for women entrepreneurs to collect payments digitally for their businesses and help boost their working capital, as loans can be transferred directly into the card.
  • Incentives, rewards, and cashback offered.
  • A fully digital product, the card is hassle-free, secure and protects user privacy.
  • While a digital card will be given as a default, a physical copy of the card can also be requested.
  • Transcorp, an RBI-regulated PPI license holder, is powering the cards as India’s first non-bank co-brand offering on the Visa network.

  • According to the latest survey by the All-India Debt and Investment Survey (AIDIS), 80.7% of women in rural areas and 81% in urban areas have bank accounts, 55% of women still don’t actively use their bank accounts.
  • A survey by YouGov has revealed that nearly two-thirds of urban Indian women use digital modes of payments, but less than one-third leveraged internet banking.

Bank Board Bureau recommends names for chiefs of PSU Banks

  • The Banks Board Bureau has recommended names for the positions of managing director (MD) and chief executive officers (CEO) at Union Bank, Indian Overseas Bank and Punjab and Sind Bank & State Bank of India (SBI).

Union Bank of India :

  • The Banks Board Bureau (BBB) has recommended A Manimekhalai for the position of managing director and chief executive (MD & CEO) of Union Bank of India.
  • She is currently Executive Director at Bengaluru-based Canara Bank.
  • She will succeed Rajkiran Rai G, the incumbent MD & CEO of Union Bank, who will complete his term by May 2022.

Indian Overseas Bank :

  • BBB has also recommended Ajay Kumar Srivastava‘s name as MD & CEO in Chennai-based IOB.

Punjab & Sind Bank :

  • Swaroop Kumar Saha has been recommended for the post of MD & CEO of PSB.

State Bank of India :

  • BBB has recommended Alok Kumar Choudhary for the position of MD at State Bank of India.
  • Ashwini Bhatia, current MD at SBI, is moving to Sebi as a whole-time member.

JSW Cement signs MoU with Punjab Renewable Energy Systems

  • JSW Cement, India’s leading green cement company and part of USD 13 billion JSW Group, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Punjab Renewable Energy Systems Pvt. Ltd (PRESPL) to use agricultural waste as biomass energy in its cement-manufacturing operations.

  • SpaceX and Tesla founder Elon Musk has bagged the top position on the 2022 M3M Hurun Global Rich List, with a total net worth of $205 billion.
  • Ambani has also emerged as the richest telecom entrepreneur in the Hurun Global Rich List.
