World Migratory Bird Day -14th May

  • International Migratory Bird Day will be celebrated on 14 May and 8 October 2022.
  • World Migratory Bird Day is marked twice a year since its inauguration in 2006.
  • The theme for World Migratory Bird Day 2022 is “light pollution”.

History of International Migratory Bird Day:

  • International Migratory Bird Day was marked in 2006 when the United Nations decided that the world’s population needs to be made aware of the worldwide migratory linkages.
  • Since then, 118 countries participated in and organised the event.
  • The United Nations (UN) Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds had envisioned the World Migratory Bird Day.
  • International Migratory Bird Day came up as a part of the UN’s agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds.
  • The idea, initially to raise awareness about eliminating the threat faced by these birds, was developed in the United States in 1993.
  • World Migratory Bird Day is celebrated across Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean on the second Saturday of October annually.
  • While in the United States and Canada, the day is celebrated on the second Saturday in May.

India Contributes USD 800,000 To Promote the Hindi Language At UN:

  • India has contributed USD 800,000 to the United Nations as part of the initiative to enhance public outreach of the organisation in Hindi.
  • Country’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, R Ravindra handed over a cheque for the UN project launched by India in 2018 to disseminate information about the UN to the Hindi-speaking population across the world.
  • India contributed $800,000 for continuing to promote #Hindi@UN

About ‘Hindi @ UN’ project:

  • ‘Hindi @ UN’ project, in collaboration with the UN Department of Public Information was launched in 2018 with an objective to enhance the public outreach of the United Nations in Hindi language, and to spread greater awareness about global issues among millions of Hindi-speaking people around the world
  • India has been partnering with the UN Department of Global Communications (DGC) since 2018 by providing an extra-budgetary contribution to mainstream and consolidate news and multimedia content of DGC in Hindi

Czech Republic to replace Russia on U.N. rights council

  • The United Nations General Assembly elected the Czech Republic to the Geneva-based UN Human Rights Council to replace Russia whose membership was suspended in April due to its ongoing war in Ukraine.
  • The Czech Republic was the only candidate to replace Russia on the 47-member UNHRC and will complete its term until December 2023.
  • In the General Assembly’s secret ballot voting, 180 of the 193 members cast ballots.
  • More than 150 countries voted in favour of Prague’s bid in the UN General Assembly, with 23 members abstaining.
  • Since late February, Russia has been suspended from multiple UN bodies and agencies including the executive boards of UN Women and UNICEF, as well as from the World Tourism Organisation.

  • The Czech Republic already served two terms in 2012-2014 and 2019-2021 and was among the council’s inaugural members.

Chhattisgarh becomes 1st state to restore old pension scheme

  • Chhattisgarh has become the first state in the country to restore the old pension scheme in order to provide assured income to retired employees.
  • The Chhattisgarh government has sent a proposal to the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) for the withdrawal of Rs 17,000 crore accrued under the National Pension Scheme since November 2004.
  • The government issued a notification saying that the old pension scheme will be effective from April 1, 2022.

Key Highlights :

  • The 10 percent deduction for monthly contribution from the salary of government employees as a contribution to the new pension scheme will be abolished from April 1, 2022.
  • However, a minimum of 12 percent of basic salary will be deducted as per the General Provident Fund rule.
  • The old pension scheme gives 50 percent of the employee’s salary as pension.

  • Also the Centre had rejected the Rajasthan government’s request to withdraw Rs 39,000 crore accrued under the National Pension Scheme since 2004.
  • The proposal for various amendments in the Rajasthan Civil Services (Pension) Rules, 1996, Rajasthan Civil Services (Contributory Pension) Rules, 2005, various revised pay scale rules and Rajasthan Civil Services (Medical Attendance) Rules, 2013 were approved.

  • Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Ajay Kumar Mishra has launched New Repatriate Welfare Scheme, a deposit scheme of Repco Bank, a micro finance loan scheme and an app for Repco Micro Finance Ltd. (RFML) in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

About Repco Subiksham :

  • Repco Subiksham is a retail deposit scheme.
  • It provides a new deposit scheme for senior citizens (aged above 60) and super senior citizens (age above 80) with an Interest rate of 7.15% and 7.25%
  • Tenure : 15 months
  • Interest Payable : Monthly/Quarterly/Half-yearly or on maturity

About Repatriate Youth Development Scheme :

  • ‘A’ class repatriate members from Myanmar or Sri Lanka and their family members are eligible for the ‘Repatriate Youth Development Scheme’.
  • The Sponsorship amount shall be upto a maximum of 25,000 and those aged between 18 and 35 are eligible to apply.

About Repco Mahila Samriddhi Scheme :

  • Repco Mahila Samriddhi Scheme meant for Self Help Groups.

Aim :

  • To support income generation activities for the underprivileged sections.
  • It will provide collateral free loans to women with household income of up to 3 lakh.

Tata Group appoints Campbell Wilson as CEO & MD of Air India

  • The Tata Group has appointed Campbell Wilsonas as the chief executive officer (CEO) and managing director (MD) of the airline.
  • Wilson’s appointment will be subject to security clearance by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
  • The MHA nod is necessary for any change in the top management of an airline & this clearance is sought by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, while granting its approval to the appointment.

About Campbell Wilsonas :

  • Campbell Wilson has 26 years experience in the aviation industry and started as a Management Trainee with Singapore Airlines in 1996 in New Zealand.
  • He worked for SIA in Hong Kong, Canada, Japan, before returning back to Singapore as the founding CEO of Scoot, which he led till 2016.
  • Wilson worked as the Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing at SIA.
  • He is the CEO of Scoot, wholly-owned low cost subsidiary of Singapore Airlines (SIA).

Ranil Wickremesinghe sworn in nem PM of Sri Lanka 

  • Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa appointed Opposition leader and former premier Ranil Wickremesinghe was 26th Prime Minister of the country after his predecessor Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned following violent protests over the worst economic crisis in the debt-ridden island nation.

Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare signs MoU with UNDP for strategic partnership on Agriculture, Crop Insurance and Credit

  • The Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare (MoA&FW), Government of India and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) under the UNDP will provide technical support to two government programmes: the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) and the Kisan Credit Card-Modified Interest Subvention Scheme (KCC-MISS).
  • The MoU was signed in the presence of Union Minister of Agriculture Narendra Singh Tomar by CEO-PMFBY Ritesh Chauhan and UNDP Resident Representative Shoko Noda.

About the MoU :

  • Under the MoU, UNDP will leverage its expertise in systems and global know-how for supporting the Ministry of Agriculture for the implementation of combined agriculture credit and crop insurance.
  • According to the MoU, UNDP will provide responsive, demand-driven technical assistance for effective implementation of agriculture credit and crop insurance,
  • As well as providing capacity development and Information, Education & Communication (IEC) support to existing national and state institutions, keeping in mind the interest of small and marginal farmers, women farmers, sharecroppers, tenant and non-loanee farmers.

Key Highlights :

  • KCC-MISS and PMFBY were launched with the aim to tackle the problematic areas of previous Schemes and to map out a structure that affords better implementation options for all stakeholders while achieving the desired results.
  • The schemes apply uniformly across the entire country and have a provision to cover all crops.
  • Under PMFBY, farmers have got more than Rs 1.15 lakh crore in compensation after paying a premium of Rs 21,000 crore.

IAF successfully test-fires extended-range version of BrahMos missile from Sukhoi

  • The Indian Air Force (IAF) has successfully test-fired an extended-range version of BrahMos supersonic cruise missile from a Sukhoi fighter jet in the Bay of Bengal.
  • Besides the IAF, the Navy, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and the BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited (BAPL) were involved in the test firing.

About BrahMos supersonic cruise missile :

  • The range of BrahMos was earlier around 290 km, which, with the new version, has reached around 350 km.
  • The project was conceived to enhance the IAF’s capability to strike from large stand-off ranges on any target on sea or land.
  • This is the first time that the extended-range version of BrahMos missile was fired from Su-30 MKI aircraft.

ISRO Successfully Tests Human-rated S200 Rocket Booster For 2023 Gaganyaan Mission

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO ) successfully completed the static test of a human-rated solid rocket booster (HS200) for the Gaganyaan programme at Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.
  • The design and development of the HS200 booster were completed at Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala & propellant casting was completed at SDSC, Sriharikota.
  • The test was for ISRO’s Gaganyaan programme.
  • The event was witnessed by ISRO Chairman S. Somanath along with other senior ISRO scientists.
  • The human-rated GSLV-Mk3 that will be labelled as the HRLV is a crucial achievement towards the Gaganyaan mission.
  • GSLV Mk III rocket is a three-staged vehicle.

About HS200 booster :

  • The HS200 is the human-rated version of the S200 rocket booster of satellite launch vehicle GSLV Mk III, popularly known as LVM3.
  • The HS200 booster loaded with 203 tonnes of solid propellant was tested for a duration of 135 seconds.
  • It is 20-meter long and 3.2 m diameter booster is the world’s second-largest operational booster with solid propellant.
  • During the test, about 700 parameters were monitored and the performance of all the systems was normal.
  • Gaganayaan would be the Indian orbital spacecraft for ISRO’s Indian Human Spaceflight Programme (IHSP) that will launch orbital spacecraft into low earth orbit in 2023.
  • The first stage is powered by the solid fuel, the second by liquid fuel and the third is the cryogenic stage, powered by liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen.

ISSF Junior World Cup: Esha Singh and Saurabh Chaudhary won gold in Mixed Team Pistol event:

  • Indian pistol pairs Esha Singh and Saurabh Chaudhary won the mixed team pistol gold at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Junior World Cup in Suhl, Germany.
  • India’s Palak and Sarabjot Singh settled for the silver medal after losing to Esha and Saurabh 16-12 in the gold medal match.
  • Ramita and Paarth Makhija also won silver in the 10m air rifle mixed team competition, going down 13-17 to the Polish pair of Julia Piotrowska and Wiktor Sajdak but not before making it three medals on the day.
  • Esha and Saurabh came through after topping a 38-field qualification round of 60 shots with scores of 578 and 575
  • In all, India has so far won 10 medals, including four gold.

Inter Milan Beat Juventus: Italian Cup 2022

  • Inter Milan were crowned the 2022 Italian Cup champions after beating Juventus 4-2 in the final.
  • Ivan Perisic scored twice in extra time after Hakan Çalhanoglu had converted a controversial late penalty.
  • Hakan Calhanoglu stepped up from the penalty spot with 80 minutes on the clock to force extra time before another spot-kick was converted by Ivan Perisic to put the Nerazzurri within touching distance of the trophy.
  • Nicolò Barella scored the other goal for Inter.
  • The Italian Cup final soccer match between Juventus and Inter Milan was held at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, Italy.

Eminent Sanskrit and Hindi Scholar, Padma Shri Dr Rama Kant Shukla Passes Away:

  • Rama Kant Shukla, a distinguished Sanskrit and Hindi scholar, died in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh (UP).
  • He was 81.

About Rama Kant Shukla

  • Rama Kant Shukla was born on 25 December 1940, at Khurja city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.
  • Rama Kant Shukla is the founder and general secretary of the Devavani Parishad in Delhi, as well as the chairman and editor of the quarterly Sanskrit journal “Arvacinasamskrtam”.
  • Literary and Sanskrit organisations bestowed upon him the Sanskrit titles of Rashtrakavi, Kaviratna, and Kavi Siromani.

His Achievements:

  • The Government of India (GoI) honoured him with Padma Shri in 2013 for literature and education.
  • In 2009, He was honoured with the President’s Award under the Sanskrit category.
  • He has also received the Sahitya Academy Award in 2018 under Sanskrit Category for poetry “Mama Janani”.
  • He has also been honoured with the UP-Government’s State Award; Sanskrit Rashtrakavi; Kalidas Samman; Delhi Sanskrit Academy’s Akhil Bharatiya Maulika Sanskrit Rachana Puraskara, the Sanskrit Samaradhaka Puraskara, and others.

UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed passes away:

  • UAE President and ruler of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan passed away.
  • He was 73.

About Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan:

  • Born in 1948, Sheikh Khalifa was the second President of the UAE and the 16th Ruler of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
  • He was the eldest son of Sheikh Zayed.
  • He was elected to succeed his father, late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who served as the UAE’s first president since the union in 1971 until he passed away on November 2, 2004.
  • Since becoming the president of the UAE, Sheikh Khalifa has presided over a major restructuring of both the Federal Government and the government of Abu Dhabi.
  • Under his reign, the UAE witnessed an accelerated development that ensured decent living for the people calling the country home.
