International Day of Families – 15th May

  • International Family Day or International Day of Families is observed every year on May 15.
  • In 1993, the UN General Assembly proclaimed the day to provide importance to families and the issues faced by them and to increase knowledge of the social, economic, and demographic processes affecting families.
  • The theme of 2022 is “Families and Urbanisation” which aims to raise awareness of the importance of sustainable, family-friendly urban policies.
  • According to the UN, Urbanisation is “one of the most important megatrends shaping our world and the life and wellbeing of families worldwide”.

History:

  • In the 1980s, the United Nations focused its attention on families and issues related to them, based on recommendations of the Economic and Social Council.
  • The Commission for Social Development in its resolution on the role of the family requested the Secretary-General to enhance awareness among decision-makers and the public of the problems and needs of the family, as well as of effective ways of meeting those needs.
  • In 1993, the General Assembly decided in a resolution that May 15 of every year should be observed as the International Day of Families.

International Day of Living Together in Peace- 16 May

  • The International Day of Living Together in Peace is celebrated every year on May 16.
  • The day is meant to signify unity in differences and diversity.
  • The day is celebrated on the 16th of May throughout the world and with its annual observance, it aims to urge people to live together in a united and peaceful way.
  • Individuals can attain this by listening to each other and respecting one another despite their differences.

History:

  • The day first came into being after the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution to declare 16 May as the International Day of Living Together in Peace on 8 December 2017.
  • The first International Day of Living Together in Peace was observed in 2018.
  • Ever since the end of World War II, the United Nations has been on a mission to work towards world peace.
  • The year 2000 was recognised as ‘The International Year for a Culture of Peace” and from 2001 to 2010, the UN declared it the “International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for Children of the World.”
  • Both of these events led to the adoption of a resolution for the formation of the International Day of Living Together in Peace.

Prime Minister’s participation in the Second Global COVID Virtual Summit:

  • Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi had participated in the Second Global COVID Virtual Summit at the invitation of the President of the U.S.A., Joseph R. Biden Jr.
  • The Summit aims to inspire new measures to solve the COVID pandemic’s ongoing difficulties and to strengthen the global health security infrastructure.
  • Prime Minister will deliver his remarks in the Opening Session of the Summit on the theme ‘Preventing Pandemic Fatigue and Prioritizing Preparedness’.
  • The session will be live-streamed from 1830 to 1945 hrs
  • Prime Minister had also participated in the first Global COVID virtual Summit hosted by President Biden on 22 September 2021.

Additional Information:

  • The United States and other hosts invited Taiwan to attend the meeting, but China and Russia declined.
  • The WHO forecasts that 4.7 million people will die in India as a result of Covid-19 in 2020 and 2021, more than ten times what the government estimates, making India’s death toll the highest in the world.
  • More than 30 countries attended the conference, which was co-hosted by the United States, Belize, Germany, Indonesia, and Senegal.
  • The 2nd global climate conference, according to a press release from the US government, resulted in more than $3 billion in additional financial pledges from participants, multilateral organisations, and philanthropic organisations, on top of promises made in 2021 and 2022.

COP15 Session on combating desertification: Bhupender Yadav led the Indian delegation:

  • The Indian delegation landed in Abidjan, Cote D’Ivoire, for the UN Convention on Combating Desertification’s 15th Conference of Parties, led by Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Shri Bhupender Yadav (UNCCD COP15).
  • The Conference of Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification held its fourteenth session in New Delhi, and India is the organization’s current president.

About COP15 Session:

  • Despite the covid outbreak, India made major contributions to bringing nations together to achieve the global aim of preventing and reversing land degradation during its presidency.
  • During India’s presidency, G-20 leaders, recognising the importance of countering land degradation and developing new carbon sinks, set an aspirational goal of planting 1 trillion trees collectively by 2030, urging other countries to join forces with the G20 to achieve this global goal.
  • The fifteenth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP15) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), which will take place in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, will bring together leaders from governments, the private sector, civil society, and other key stakeholders from around the world to drive progress in future sustainable land management and to explore links between land and other key sustainability issues.
  • These problems will be considered at the high-level phase and will include a Heads of States Summit, high-level roundtables and interactive dialogue sessions, as well as a variety of additional special and side activities. ​
  • Drought, land restoration, and associated enablers including land rights, gender equality, and youth empowerment are among the conference’s major priorities.
  • COP15 is expected to galvanise sustainable solutions for land restoration and drought resilience through resolutions made by the UNCCD’s 197 Parties, with a significant focus on future-proofing land usage.

Exim Bank’s Government of India supported additional Line of Credit (LoC) of

USD 190 million to the SBM (Mauritius) Infrastructure Development Company Ltd

  • Export-Import Bank of India (Exim Bank) has entered into an agreement dated January 06, 2022 with the SBM (Mauritius) Infrastructure Development Company Ltd (SBMIDCL), for making available to the latter, Government of India supported Line of Credit (LoC) of USD 190 million.

Purpose of the agreement :

  • To finance its participation through Redeemable Preference Shares in public sector entities for implementing the ongoing Metro Express Project and other infrastructure projects in Mauritius.
  • The Credit facility is an additional tranche to the existing Credit of USD 500 million which has been extended to SBMIDCL on the terms and conditions contained in the Dollar Credit Line Agreement dated May 27, 2017.
  • Under the arrangement, financing of export of eligible goods and services from India, as defined under the agreement, would be allowed subject to their being eligible for export under the Foreign Trade Policy of the Government of India and whose purchase may be agreed to be financed by the Exim Bank under this agreement.
  • Out of the total credit by Exim Bank under the agreement, goods and services of the value of at least 75 percent of the contract price shall be supplied by the seller from India.
  • The remaining 25 percent of goods and services may be procured by the seller for the purpose of the eligible contract from outside India.
  • However, Indian content requirement for the Metro Express Project shall be 30% of the contract price.
  • Under the LoC, the terminal utilization period is 60 months from the scheduled completion date of the project.
  • As per instructions issued by the Reserve Bank from time to time, Shipments under the LoC shall be declared in Export Declaration Form
  • No agency commission is payable for export under the above LoC.
  • The directions contained in this circular have been issued under section 10(4) and 11(1) of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), 1999 (42 of 1999) and are without prejudice to permissions/ approvals, if any, required under any other law.

RBI restricts withdrawals from Shankarrao Pujari Nutan Nagari Sahakari Bank

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) imposed several restrictions on Shankarrao Pujari Nutan Nagari Sahakari Bank Limited, Ichalkaranji, Kolhapur, including on withdrawals, in view of the lender’s worsening financial position.
  • The restrictions will remain in force for a period of six months from the close of business on May 13, 2022 and are subject to review.
  • However, 84 per cent of the depositors are fully covered by the DICGC insurance scheme.
  • Under the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC) insurance scheme, deposits of up to Rs 5 lakh are insured.
  • Considering the bank’s present liquidity position, no amount from the total balance across all savings bank or current accounts or any other account of a depositor, may be allowed to be withdrawn, but are allowed to set off loans against deposits subject to the conditions.

  • Union Bank of India (UBI) has launched a digital solution, ‘Trade nxt’ to ease all cross-border export-import transactions for corporates and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

  • ‘Trade nxt’ eliminates the need for companies to visit a bank branch to initiate a trade transaction and ensures better governance with enhanced security and controls.

Morgan Stanley lowers India’s FY23 growth forecast to 7.6%

  • Global brokerage firm Morgan Stanley has lowered India’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth forecast for the current financial year to 7.6 percent from 7.9 percent for F2023.
  • It stated that slowdown in global growth, higher commodity prices and risk aversion in global capital markets expose Asia’s third-largest economy to downside risks.
  • The baseline forecast for India is 7.6 per cent growth for FY23, its bearish and bullish growth projections are 6.7 per cent and 8 per cent, respectively.
  • However, sees the Indian economy expanding at above pre-pandemic growth rates in FY23 and FY24.

Key Highlights :

  • Earlier, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has revised downwards its growth projection for FY23 to 7.2 percent from 7.8 percent.
  • The World Bank slashed its FY23 growth forecast for India to 8 percent from 8.7 percent estimated in January.
  • For FY24, the investment bank lowered its growth forecast to 6.7 percent from 7 percent estimated earlier.
  • The investment bank has projected global growth at 2.9 percent in calendar year 2022, less than half of the 6.2 per cent growth in 2021.
  • CPI (Consumer Price Index) inflation is expected to be 6.5% for FY23.
  • The current account deficit widened to a 10-year high of 3.3% of GDP (Gross Domestic Product) in FY23.

  • It will be getting economic support for setting up Renewable energy plants to provide sustainable energy in the villages of Uttar Pradesh.
  • Currently, OMC Power has 280 renewable energy plants across Uttar Pradesh and
  • OMC Power plans to expand its footprint to 1000 sites to drastically reduce the Carbon footprint in rural India.

  • The Ministry of Rural Development and Amazon Seller Services Private Limited (Amazon) signed an MoU at Krishi Bhawan, New Delhi .

  • Amazon will help market and promote products listed by SHGs through the Saheli Storefront, Social media, Events and Onsite merchandising
  • MoRD (through respective SRLM) will help identify and appraise GST verified sellers to sell on Amazon.in, and assist the sellers in securing GST, PAN etc.
  • MoRD & Amazon will conduct joint workshops for awareness creation and assist the sellers in listing their products and to unlock growth levers to grow their business on Amazon.in

  • As on April 30, 2022, a total of 1088 products have been uploaded at Government e-Marketplace (GeM) by 455 SHGs/ SHG members.

  • Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), Hyderabad, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Indian Navy to provide training services and support to the School of Naval Oceanology and Meteorology (SNOM) for conduct of various courses related to operational oceanography.
  • The MoU was signed by Dr T.Srinivasa Kumar, Director of INCOIS and Commodore AA Abhyankar, Head of Indian Navy’s Oceanology and Meteorology Directorate.
  • The agreement to be provided through the state-of-the-art International Training Centre for Operational Oceanography (ITCOO).
  • The MoU will allow future interactions and professional exchange of data between the Indian Navy and INCOIS.

GatiShakti Sanchar’ portal for Centralised Right of Way launched by DoT:

  • The Central government has launched the “GatiShakti Sanchar” platform for centralised Right of Way (RoW) permissions in order to allow universal and equal access to broadband services across India, particularly in rural areas.
  • The portal, developed by MP State Electronics Development Corporation on behalf of the Department of Telecommunication (DoT), was launched by Union Minister for Communications, Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw at an event in New Delhi in the presence of various state chief secretaries and IT secretaries along with the top officials of various telecom service providers (TSPs).

About GatiShakti Sanchar portal:

  • Applicants from diverse telecom service providers (TSPs) and infrastructure providers (IPs) would be able to apply for the right of way licences to lay optical fibre cable and erect mobile towers through a unified platform for state and municipal governments.
  • The software also has a sophisticated dashboard that displays state and district-level pendency status for effective RoW application tracking across the country.

Swiggy acquires restaurant tech platform Dineout for $200 million:

  • An online food-delivery app, Swiggy has agreed to buy Times Internet’s restaurant technology and dining out platform
  • Dineout will continue to operate as an independent app following the acquisition, according to Swiggy.
  • Founders Ankit Mehrotra, Nikhil Bakshi, Sahil Jain and Vivek Kapoor will join Swiggy once the acquisition is completed.
  • In the last 20 months, Swiggy has strengthened its food delivery business, expanded Instamart, its quick commerce grocery delivery to 28 cities.
  • It has recently commenced drone trials for Instamart.

About Dineout:

  • Dineout, launched by Mehrotra, Nikhil Bakshi, Sahil Jain, and Vivek Kapoor in 2012, allows customers to search for restaurants in their area and make reservations at any of the 50,000 restaurants in 20 cities.
  • It also provides restaurants with contactless eating options, as well as discounts and privileges for Dineout Passport and Dineout Pay clients at certain restaurants.
  • Dineout was purchased by Times Internet, the digital media division of Bennett, Coleman and Company Ltd., which publishes ET.
  • Dineout has close to 5 million customers, whereas Swiggy has over 50 million active annual transacting users, according to the data.

Former Australian cricketer Andrew Symonds dies:

  • Former Australia cricketer and two-time World Cup winner Andrew Symonds died in a car crash.
  • The 46-year-old, who represented Australia in 26 Tests and 198 one-day internationals between 1998 and 2009, was killed in a single-car collision in Townsville, Queensland.
  • Symonds was also an excellent fielder, playing a major role in Australia’s back-to-back 50-over World Cup victories in 2003 and 2007.

  • Symonds, who was born in England and had one Afro-Caribbean father, is also known for the infamous “monkeygate” affair, which pushed him into a downward spiral.
  • In the 2008 New Year Test in Sydney, he claimed India spinner Harbhajan Singh called him a “monkey.”
  • He featured in 198 ODIs scoring six centuries and 30 half-centuries while also contributing 133 wickets with his more than handy off-spin and medium pace.
  • Symonds also played 14 T20I for Australia, managing 337 runs and eight wickets.
