Indian Commonwealth Day 2022:

  • Commonwealth Day is typically observed on the second Monday of March in the majority of the Commonwealth’s 54 member countries, with the British monarch delivering a radio address.
  • However, it is observed on May 24 in India and a few other nations.

THEMES:

  • The theme for Commonwealth Day 2022 is ‘Delivering a Common Future’ which showcases how the Commonwealth’s fifty-four member countries are “innovating, connecting, and reforming” to assist achieve goals such as combating climate change, fostering good governance, and enhancing commerce.

HISTORY

  • Previously, Commonwealth Day was known as Empire Day.
  • Empire Day was first marked in 1901, following Queen Victoria’s death on January 22, 1901.
  • Empire Day was first marked on May 24, 1902, the late Queen’s birthday.
  • Even before it was formally recognised as an annual event, it was celebrated in many schools around the British Empire.
  • The British Empire had begun to dissolve by the 1950s, as various colonies gained independence, and Empire Day had lost its significance.
  • The majority of them, though, maintained relations with Britain and founded the Commonwealth of Nations.
  • In 1958, Empire Day was renamed Commonwealth Day.
  • The Royal Commonwealth Society advocated changing the date to 1973, and the
  • Commonwealth Secretariat chose the second Monday in March as commemoration day.

World Turtle Day- 23rd May

  • Every year on May 23, American Tortoise Rescue, a non-profit organisation, observes World Turtle Day.
  • The day is observed to increase public awareness about the importance of protecting turtles and tortoises, as well as their diminishing habitats around the world.
  • Tortoises and turtles serve a vital function in the Earth’s ecological design.
  • These reptiles have been observed to survive and thrive in a wide variety of settings around the world.

THEMES:

  • This year’s theme for World Turtle Day is “Shellebrate”.
  • The theme asks “everyone to Love and Save Turtles”.

HISTORY:

  • There would be no World Turtle Day if the American Tortoise Rescue (ATR) had not initiated it.
  • This non-profit organisation was founded in 1990 and began commemorating World Turtle Day in 2001.
  • They are commemorating the 22nd International World Turtle Day.
  • Susan Tellem and her husband Marshall Thompson created the organisation, which has rescued and re-homed over 4,000 turtles and tortoises.

Indian Railways and IIT Madras Join Forces to Build India’s First Hyperloop:

  • The Ministry of Railways has announced a collaboration with IIT Madras to create a made-in-India Hyperloop system.
  • It has also announced the establishment of a Hyperloop Technology Centre of Excellence at the aforementioned institution.
  • Since 2017, India has demonstrated interest in Hyperloop technology, led by then-Railway Minister Mr Suresh Prabhu.
  • In addition, the ministry held discussions with the US-based Hyperloop One, but nothing came of it.

Hyperloop:

  • Hyperloop is a high-speed transportation concept in which pressurised vehicles (or pods) travel via a low-pressure tunnel, allowing for nearly no resistance movement through the atmosphere, akin to air travel.
  • Consider an aircraft-like speed on land, travelling through low-pressure tunnels from one terminal to another.
  • The pods would move using mag-lev technology, which would allow for a frictionless journey.

Hyperloop in India:

  • Avishkar Hyperloop, founded in 2017 at IIT Madras, has been working on scalability and cost-effective engineering concepts for the creation of a Hyperloop-based transportation system for India.
  • The team finished as one of the top 10 finalists in the 2019 SpaceX Hyperloop Pod competition, the only Asian team to do so.
  • They were also given the ‘Most Scalable Design Award’ during the 2021 European Hyperloop Week.
  • In March 2022, the university addressed the Ministry of Railways with a proposal for collaborative work on a prototype as well as the creation of a first-of-its-kind Hyperloop Test facility at its Discovery campus in Thaiyur, Tamil Nadu.

Dr Jitendra Singh Announces the Launch of the ‘BioRRAP’ Portal for Biotech Researchers:

  • Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh introduced the Single National Portal for Biotech Researchers and Start-ups, in keeping with the One Nation, One Portal
  • BioRRAP will be used by anyone seeking regulatory approval for biological research and development in the country.
  • According to the Minister, biotechnology has swiftly become a viable academic and career alternative for Indian youngsters.
  • There are currently over 2,700 biotech start-ups and over 2,500 biotech firms operating in the country.

About ‘BioRRAP’ Portal Launch:

  • Dr Jitendra Singh remarked following the portal’s launch that India is on pace to become a global bio-manufacturing hub and will rank among the top five countries in the world by 2025.
  • He further stated that the Portal will allow stakeholders to view the approvals granted to a single application by utilising a unique BioRRAP ID.
  • He praised DBT’s one-of-a-kind gateway for making science and scientific research more accessible to Indians and making it simpler to start businesses.

ONGC is the first Indian exploration and production company to trade domestic gas:

  • The state-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) is the first gas producer to sell domestic gas on the Indian Gas Exchange, exchanging unspecified amounts from the KG-DWN-98/2 block off India’s coast.
  • ONGC announced in a statement that output will be steadily increased.
  • ONGC created history when it became the country’s first exploration and production (E&P) business to sell domestic gas on the Indian Gas Exchange.

About ONGC:

  • Anurag Sharma, ONGC Director (Onshore) and In-charge Marketing executed the first online deal on India’s first automated national level Gas Exchange, IGX.
  • The gas swapped originated from the ONGC Krishna Godavari 98/2 block, however, the quantity sold was not specified.
  • ONGC has planned to benefit from the liberalisation of the gas price ecosystem between 2000 and 21.

SBI introduces Real Time Xpress Credit on YONO app

  • The country’s largest lender State Bank of India (SBI) has introduced Real Time Xpress Credit on its Yono platform, allowing eligible customers to get personal loans of up to 35 lakh.

Aim :

  • To digitally empower customers and offer additional convenience.
  • The service would be a 100 percent paperless and digital experience and an end-to-end 8 step journey.
  • The bank also claimed that the flagship personal loan product for salaried customers – Xpress Credit.

Benefits of Real Time Xpress Credit

  • Central, state government and defence salaried customers of SBI will no longer be required to visit the branch for availing a personal loan.
  • Credit checks, eligibility, sanction and documentation will now be done digitally in real-time.

RBI sets up panel to review customer service standards at banks, NBFCs

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) constituted a committee to examine & review the efficacy, adequacy and quality of customer service in banks, non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) and payment operators.
  • It is a part of the Statement on Developmental and Regulatory Policies released along with the Monetary Policy Statement.
  • The six-member committee comprises

  • Evaluate the efficacy, adequacy and quality of customer service in entities regulated by RBI vis-à-vis the existing RBI guidelines on customer service and identify gaps, if any
  • Review the emerging and evolving needs of the customer service landscape, especially in the context of evolving digital/ electronic financial products and distribution landscape and suggest suitable regulatory measures
  • Identify the best practices, adopted globally and domestically, in customer service and grievance redressal, especially for improvement in services rendered to retail and small customers, including pensioners and senior citizens
  • Suggest measures to leverage technology for enhancing customer service efficiencies, upgrading internal grievance redress mechanism in REs and strengthening the overall consumer protection framework of RBI;
  • Any other matter relevant to customer service and consumer protection.

  • India’s largest private sector bank, HDFC Bank Partners with India’s largest B2B pharma marketplace , Retailio launched a new range of co-branded credit cards primarily targeted at chemists and pharmacies in the merchant segment.
  • The credit cards will be available to more than 1 lakh customers of Retailio from their existing merchant base and new customers.

Under this the credit cards will offer:

  • Upto 50 days of Interest-free credit period
  • Reward points on spend and purchases through all merchants,
  • Annual milestone benefits like 500 Bonus Reward Points on spending Rs 25,000 per month and 1,500 Bonus Reward Points on spending Rs 50,000 per month (exclusive for RIO club members),

India records highest ever FDI inflow of USD 83.57 billion in FY 21-22       

  • According to the data released by the commerce and industry ministry, India has recorded the highest ever annual FDI inflow of USD 83.57 billion in the Financial Year 2021-22 overtaking FY21’s FDI by USD 1.60 billion despite military operation in Ukraine and COVID-19 pandemic.

Note :

  • FDI inflow has increased by 23% post-Covid (March, 2020 to March 2022: USD 171.84 billion) in comparison to FDI inflow reported pre-Covid (February, 2018 to February, 2020: USD 141.10 billion) in India.
  • India’s FDI inflows have increased 20-fold since FY03-04, when the inflows were USD 4.3 billion only.

Key Highlights :

  • In terms of top investor countries of FDI Equity inflow, Singapore is at the apex with 27%, followed by S.A (18%) and Mauritius (16%) for the FY 2021-22.
  • Computer Software & Hardware has emerged as the top recipient sector of FDI Equity inflow during FY 2021-22 with around 25% share followed by Services Sector (12%) and Automobile Industry (12%) respectively.
  • Under the sector `Computer Software & Hardware’, the major recipient states of FDI Equity inflow are Karnataka (53%), Delhi (17%) and Maharashtra (17%) during FY 2021-22.
  • Karnataka is the top recipient state with 38% share of the total FDI Equity inflow reported during the FY 2021-22 followed by Maharashtra (26%) and Delhi (14%).
  • India is rapidly emerging as a preferred country for foreign investments in the manufacturing sector. FDI Equity inflow in Manufacturing Sectors have increased by 76% in FY 2021-22 (USD 21.34 billion) compared to previous FY 2020-21 (USD 12.09 billion).

IDBI Bank divests its entire 19.18% stake in ARCIL

  • IDBI Bank has divested its entire holding of 6,23,23,800 fully paid-up equity shares constituting 19.18 percent of the total equity share capital of Asset Reconstruction Company (India) Ltd. (ARCIL) to Avenue India Resurgence Pte. Ltd.
  • The lender, however, did not disclose the deal value.

Jose Ramos-Horta sworn in as East Timor president

  • Former independence fighter and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Jose Ramos-Horta was sworn in as president of East Timor for the period of 5 years i.e. 2022 to 2027, making it the second time for him to lead Southeast Asia’s youngest nation.
  • His inauguration came on the celebration of Timor Leste’s Independence Day, which falls on May 20, 2022 ( marks 20th anniversary).
  • He defeated incumbent Francisco “Lu Olo” Guterres, his fellow independence fighter, in the election.
  • He secured 62 percent against the former guerilla fighter’s 37 percent.
  • Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and Indonesian Coordinating Minister of Political, Law and Security Affairs Mohammad Mahfud were among those who attended the inauguration.

  • Ramos-Horta, 72, is also known as one of Timor Leste’s founding fathers.

KVIC Chairman Vinai Kumar Saxena is new Lieutenant Governor of Delhi

  • Chairman of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), Vinai Kumar Saxena has been appointed as the new Lieutenant Governor (L-G) of Delhi.
  • He will succeed outgoing Anil Baijal who resigned from the post last week citing “personal reasons”.

  • Saxena is the first corporate businessman to be chosen for the role of Lieutenant Governor of Delhi.

  • Vinai Kumar Saxena Born on March 23, 1958, in Uttar Pradesh.

  • The WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has announced six awards to recognize outstanding contributions to advancing global health, demonstrated leadership and commitment to regional health issues.
  • The recipients of the prize are decided by WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus

ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist Workers) :

  • ASHA which means hope in Hindi.
  • ASHAs are trained female volunteers who take healthcare services to rural, marginalized, and hard-to-reach communities across India.
  • It plays a critical role in India’s primary healthcare system, including during the Covid-19 pandemic, providing essential health services to millions of people.
  • The ASHA community health worker concept was instituted by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) as a part of India’s National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) in 2005.

Ahmed bin Saeed Honors the Winner of the First Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award 2022

  • Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, Chairman of Dubai Airports and Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline and Group honored the winner of the Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award at an award ceremony held at Atlantis The Palm, Dubai.
  • Anna Qabale Duba from Marsabit County in Kenya was named the winner of the Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award, which has a prize money of $250,000, for endorsing education and campaigning against outdated cultural practices like Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in her community.
  • She beat more than 24,000 nominees from 184 countries to the Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award.
  • The top 10 finalists for the Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award were announced on 26 April.
  • The winner was chosen after a public voting process, followed by the Grand Jury’s final evaluation.

Music Academy Announces Sangita Kalanidhi Awards For 3 Years

  • The Music Academy announced the Sangita Kalanidhi and other awards for various artists from the years 2020, 2021 and 2022.
  • Chief Minister M K Stalin will present the awards while inaugurating the 96th Annual Conference and Concerts on December 15, 2022.

Awards & Awardees :

Sangita Kalanidhi Award :

  • Awarded to one person highest accolade in the field of Carnatic music.
  • Since 2005, the Sangeetha Kalanidhi has also received the MS Subbulakshmi Award instituted by The Hindu.
  • Sangita Kalanidhi will be given to
  • Renowned vocalist Neyveli R Santhanagopalan – 2020
  • Eminent mridangam artiste Tiruvarur Bhakthavathsalam – 2021
  • Violin duo Lalgudi GJR Krishnan and Vijayalakshmi – 2022.

Sangita Kala Acharya awards :

  • This award was instituted in 1993 and is given to those who have contributed by bringing several disciples to the concert platform.
  • Two senior musicians/preceptors are given this award each year.
  • The award was received by nadaswaram exponent Kivalur N G Ganesan (2020)
  • Vocalist, musicologist, and guru Dr Ritha Rajan (2021)
  • Vainika and musicologist Dr R S Jayalakshmi  – 2022

T T K Award :

  • It is named after TT Krishnamachari, former Union Minister and industrialist, who was a great patron of the arts and was Vice-President of the Music Academy.
  • Awarded to two senior musicians who have made a mark in the music field as icons and gurus.
  • Noted vocalist and guru Thamarakkad Govindan Namboodiri – 2020
  • Versatile percussionist Nemani Somayajulu – 2021
  • Noted Kanjra artiste A V Anand – 2022.

The Musicologist award :

  • This was instituted as the Vaggeyakara award in 1999 by Smt R Ranganayaki to recognise outstanding contemporary music composers in the field.
  • In 2008, the scope of this award was changed to include musicologists as well and the award was renamed the Musicologist Award.
  • 2020 will be presented to Dr V Premalatha.

Nritya Kalanidhi :

  • Bharatanatyam exponents Rama Vaidyanathan (2020)
  • Narthaki Nataraj (2021).
  • Bragha Bessell, widely respected Abhinaya expert and guru, will be awarded the prize for 2022.
  • The Annual Music Festival will be held from December 15, 2022, to January 1, 2023, and the Dance Festival from January 3 to January 9, 2023.

The First National Film Festival of J&K, the DIPR, and the NFDC sign a Memorandum of Understanding:

  • The National Film Festival of Jammu and Kashmir is quickly approaching, and the J&K Department of Information and Public Relations has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Film Development Corporation Limited.
  • The agreement was signed in the presence of Shri Nitishwar Kumar, Principal Secretary to the Lt Governor, by Shri Akshay Labroo, Director, Department of Information and Public Relations, J&K, and Shri D. Ramakrishnan, General Manager, NFDC.

About the event:

  • The event is being co-organized by the National Film Development Corporation Limited and the Directorate of Information and Public Relations, J&K, and will take place from June 15 to June 20.
  • The festival’s purpose is to highlight and promote the University of Tennessee’s creative environment, as well as to promote J&K as a leading destination for filmmakers from across the world.

  • India’s men’s badminton team wins the Thomas Cup for the first time, defeating superpower Indonesia 3-0 in the final.

  • World Championships medalist Lakshya Sen, Kidambi Srikanth, and the world number 8 doubles combo of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy all delivered outstanding performances for India.

BCCI signed up as NFT partner for Women’s T20 Challenge:
