Goa’s Liberation Day- 19 Dec

  • Goa Liberation Day is observed on December 19 every year in India, and it marks the day Indian armed forces freed Goa in 1961 following 450 years of Portuguese rule.
  • The Portuguese colonised several parts of India in 1510 but by the end of the 19th-century Portuguese colonies in India were limited to Goa, Daman, Diu, Dadra, Nagar Haveli and Anjediva Island.
  • The Goa liberation movement, which sought to end Portuguese colonial rule in Goa, started off with small scale revolts.
  • According to the Indian Navy website, Indian troops reclaimed the Goan territory on December 19 with little resistance and the deposed governor general Manuel António Vassalo e Silva signed the certificate of surrender thus bringing Portuguese rule in the region to an end.
  • This made India completely free from foreign rule.
  • The War Memorial at Indian Naval Ship Gomantak was constructed in memory of seven young gallant sailors and other personnel who laid down their lives on 19 Dec 1961 in the “Operation Vijay” undertaken by the Indian Navy for the liberation of Anjadip Island and Territories of Goa, Daman and Diu

International Human Solidarity Day- 20 Dec

  • International Human Solidarity Day, observed on December 20, is an international annual Unity Day of the United Nations and its member states
  • According to the United Nations Millennium Declaration, solidarity is among the fundamental values that are essential to international relations.
  • Significance:
  • To celebrate unity in diversity
  • To remind governments to respect their commitments to international agreements
  • To raise public awareness
  • To encourage new initiatives to eradicate poverty.
  • The General Assembly, on 22 December 2005, by resolution 60/209 identified solidarity as one of the fundamental and universal values that should underlie relations between peoples in the twenty-first century, and in that regard decided to proclaimed 20 December of each year International Human Solidarity Day.

PM Narendra Modi launches development projects worth 650 crore rupees on Goa Liberation Day

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has participated in the Goa Liberation Day celebrations at Shyamaprasad Mukherjee Stadium in Taligao.
  • He felicitated freedom fighters and veterans of ‘Operation Vijay’ at the function.
  • During his address on this occasion, the Prime Minister informed Goa is top in good governance, per capita income, and several other fronts
  • The Prime Minister also inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of several development projects worth over 650 crore rupees in the state.

Raksha Mantri inaugurates Centre of Excellence in Land Survey in National Institute of Defence Estates Management

  • As a part of the Capacity Building initiative of the Government of India, National Institute of Defence Estates Management one of the premier Central Training Institutes has established a Centre of Excellence in Land Survey.
  • This centre was inaugurated on 16th December 2021 by the Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh.
  • Defence Estates Organisation constantly undertakes land surveys as a part of their domain specialization and thereby developed expertise in this area of activity.
  • The Centre of Excellence will cater to the training needs of Government officers and technical personnel who are involved in surveys exclusively in emerging survey technologies like Drone surveys and Satellite imagery-based surveys.
  • Nowadays real-time monitoring systems based on digital photogrammetric techniques, high-resolution satellite imagery, airborne and terrestrial laser scanner devices can give a set of powerful tools for geometric surveying and modelling.
  • The Centre of Excellence is focused on such new techniques of the survey.
  • The expertise developed in this regard will be shared with other Central and State Government Departments including autonomous bodies who are willing to sponsor participants to the basis and specialized courses to be conducted at the Centre of Excellence.

GIS Based Automatic Water Supply System for citizens of Cantonment Board under eChhawani project

  • The GIS Based ‘Automatic Water Supply System’ for citizens of Cantonment Boards has been launched recently by Raksha Mantri Shri. Rajnath Singh on the occasion of Defence Estates Day 2021.
  • The module of GIS based Water Supply system for Cantonment Boards has been developed by Bhaskaracharya Institute for Space Applications and Geo informatics (BISAG) under the guidance of Defence Secretary and Director General of Defence Estates, Delhi.
  • The module further facilitates sanction for water connection online. Once the system issues sanction, the concerned Department in Cantt Board will ensure actual water connection within given time-lines.
  • The system is highly user friendly, efficient and transparent.
  • This GIS System is first of its kind in the country. It is based on “minimum government and supports the concept of “maximum governance” as there is no manual intervention for clearance/sanction of the water connection.
  • In conventional Water Supply System, citizens apply to the local bodies and the application is processed which takes time.
  • The charges are required to be deposited offline and no time period is defined for grant of water connection.
  • BISAG has successfully implemented the GIS module and its integration with the e-Chhawani portal is done by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL).

  • The Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG), Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions in collaboration with Ministry of External Affairs, Department of Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, Department of Personnel & Training, Department of Pensions and Pensioners’ Welfare and Ministry of Panchayati Raj and Rural Development is celebrating Good Governance Week on 20-25th December as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebration.
  • The Minister will inaugurate the Exhibition on Good Governance Practices – “शासन की बदलती तस्वीर. Dr Jitendra Singh will launch the Good Governance Week Portal and will release the booklet on 2-year achievements of
  • A film on “Prashasan Gaon Ki Aur” will be screened on this occasion.
  • The theme of Good Governance Week is “Prashasan Gaon Ki Aur”- a Nation-wide campaign for Redressal of Public Grievances and Improving Service Delivery will be held in all Districts, States, and Union Territories of India.
  • The progress of the Good Governance Week will be monitored on a portal pgportal.gov.in/ggw.

Under Jal Jeevan Mission, Rs 10,180 Crore Central fund allocated to Rajasthan in 2021-22

  • Mission mode approach being adopted in the State of Rajasthan for providing tap water supply supply to every rural household of the State under Jal Jeevan Mission, the flagship programme of the Union Government.
  • Government of India is providing all out support to States to make provision of tap water supply to every rural household of the country by 2024.
  • For implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission, there is no dearth of funds.
  • To assist the State of Rajasthan, to achieve ‘Har Ghar Jal’, Union Minister of Jal Shakti, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat approved Central allocation of Rs 10,180 Crore for Jal Jeevan Mission in 2021-22, a four-fold increase from Rs 2,522 Crore allocated in 2020-21.
  • Out of 1.01 Crore rural households in the State, 11.74 lakh (11.5%) households had tap water supply as of 15th August 2019, when Jal Jeevan Mission was announced by the Hon’ble Prime Minister.
  • Since launch of the mission, 9.65 lakh households (9.5%) have been provided tap water connections in the State of Rajasthan. Today, 21.39 (21.1%) lakh rural homes in the State are getting tap water supply in their homes.
  • In 2021-22, Rs 1,712 Crore has been allocated to Rajasthan as 15th Finance Commission tied grant for water & sanitation to Rural Local Bodies/ PRIs.
  • There is an assured funding of Rs 9,032 Crore for the next five years i.e. up to 2025-26. This huge investment in rural areas of Rajasthan, will accelerate economic activities and boost rural economy.
  • It will create new employment opportunities in villages.

Central Silk Board and the Assam Forest and Environment Department sign a MoU to support forest-based families dealing in Sericulture

Piyush Goyal inaugurates Packaged Drinking Water Test Facility at National Test House, Ghaziabad

  • Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution and Textiles, Shri Piyush Goyal inaugurated the Packaged Drinking Water Test Facility at National Test House (NTH),
  • With the inauguration of two equipment, – Ultra High-Performance Liquid Chromatograph (UHPLC) and Ion Chromatograph (IC), NTH-Ghaziabad has added a feather in comprehensive quality testing facility for water.
  • UHPLC is helpful for quantification of different organic compounds especially residual pesticides in Drinking Water samples.
  • NTH (NR), Ghaziabad is equipped with facilities of Drinking water, Transformers, Household appliances, LPG Gas Stove, Pressure Cooker, Impulse Voltage Test of transformers, thereby serving the interest of consumers by quality assurance practices.
  • With the inauguration of two equipment, NTH-Ghaziabad has added valuable testing facility for water.
  • The equipment UHPLC will be helpful for quantification of different organic compound particularly residual pesticides in Water samples, whereas IC will be used for quantification of different anions particularly bromate in packaged drinking water.
  • All NTH labs, including Ghaziabad, have been mapped on the ‘Parakh’ portal, which is a Geographic Information System (GIS) based Unified Laboratory Network, developed by DPIIT.
  • The portal makes it possible to search labs for a particular product, standard, test method in a state or a city and would facilitate transparency in the testing activities.

Power sector CPSEs register 45% growth in Capital Expenditure Investment over previous year

  • Power sector Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) have registered 45 per cent growth in Capital Expenditure Investment over previous year.
  • Power Ministry targets for Capital Expenditure of the CPSEs is around 50 thousand 690 crore rupees in the current financial year.
  • The Ministry, CPSEs have so far invested more than 32,000 crore rupees, which is around 63 per cent of the annual Capital Expenditure target.

Top Indian CEOs expect country’s economy to grow at 9-10% during current fiscal

  • The Indian economy is all set for a strong rebound in the current fiscal posting a growth rate of 9-10 per cent, says a CEOs poll conducted among the members of the CII National Council.
  • As regards growth, about 10 per cent of the CEOs polled believe that it could even exceed 10 per cent during 2021-22.
  • CII President T V Narendran announced the government’s strong emphasis on public works, timely interventions to boost liquidity and several reforms carried out in the recent months have buoyed the optimism on higher economic growth.
  • The poll is based on the responses of about 100 CEOs
  • On the impact of Omicron on business, 55 per cent of the CEOs polled expect that the services sector would get adversely impacted due to the spread of the new variant of coronavirus, while another 34 per cent of the CEOs indicated that it could adversely impact manufacturing activities.
  • According to the CEOs poll, 56 per cent of the respondents indicated that the economy would grow in the range of 9 per cent to 10 per cent during 2021-22, while another 10 per cent polled expected the growth rate in excess of 10 per cent this fiscal year

SEBI bans derivative trading in slew of agriculture commodities

  • In a major blow, the capital and commodity market regulator SEBI has banned futures and options trading in a host of agriculture commodities including chana, mustardseed, soya bean and its derivatives, crude palm oil, moong, paddy (Basmati) and wheat for a period of one year.
  • The ban would come into effect from 20TH
  • Following this, MCX has banned fresh position on crude palm oil and allowed only squaring-off in the December contracts.
  • Only squaring up of existing positions will be allowed and no new Futures and Options contracts will be launched till further notice in any of these commodities.
  • The drastic move comes on the back of concern over rising inflation and would unsettle the entire commodity derivatives eco-system including that of broking firms which will be literally left only with only metal and energy contracts to trade and promote.

SAIL Receives Prestigious Golden Peacock Environment Management Award 2021

  • The Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL), under the Ministry of Steel has been awarded with the prestigious Golden Peacock Environment Management Award for the year 2021 in the Steel Sector by the Institute of Directors (IoD).
  • SAIL received the award for successive three years.

Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren launches SAHAY scheme for maoist-hit areas

  • The Chief Minister of Jharkhand, Hemant Soren has launched the scheme titled Sports Action toward Harnessing Aspiration of Youth (SAHAY).

Aim :

  • To nurture young sports talent in the Maoist affected districts of the state.

About SAHAY :

  • The scheme has been launched to curb Left Wing Extremism (LWE), which has affected 19 out of 24 districts of the state.
  • According to the scheme, boys and girls in the 14-19 age group from villages to ward level will be registered under the scheme, and given opportunities to display their skills in basketball, volleyball, hockey and athletics.
  • They will be encouraged with incentives such as cash prizes as well as money for kits.
  • A Sports Nursery will be set up in the affected areas to nurture talented youngsters.
  • The scheme, which was launched in Saraikela-Kharsawan, West Singhbhum, Khunti, Gumla and Simdega districts, will be replicated in other districts as well.
  • According to police records, 126 extremism-related incidents were reported the state in 2020, down from 196 in the year 2016. Number of civilians killed by extremists was 28 in 2020, down from 61 in 2016.

India successfully test-fires new generation Agni Prime missile off Odisha coast

  • On Dec 18, 2021, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully test-fired the new generation nuclear-capable ballistic missile ‘Agni Prime’ from APJ Abdul Kalam island off the coast of Odisha in Balasore.
  • The first test was successfully carried out on June 28, 2021 by the DRDO.

About Agni Prime missile :

  • Agni-P is a new generation advanced variant of the Agni class of missiles.
  • It is a two-stage canisterised missile with range capability between 1,000 and 2,000 km.
  • The ballistic missile weighs 50 percent less than Agni 3 and can be launched from rail and road and stored for a longer period and transported all across the country as per operational requirements.
  • Agni-5 is capable of striking targets at ranges up to 5,000 kilometers with a very high degree of accuracy.
  • Other Agni missiles that India has are – Agni-1 with a 700-km range, Agni-2 with a 2,000-km range, Agni-3 and Agni-4 with 2,500 km to over 3,500 km
  • In addition to that, the Vertically Launched Short Range Surface to Air Missile (VL-SRSAM) was successfully test-fired from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur.

DRDO conducts flight demonstration of Controlled Aerial Delivery System

  • On December 18, 2021, Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE), Agra conducted a flight demonstration of Controlled Aerial Delivery System of 500 kg capacity (CADS-500).
  • The flight demonstration is part of a series of activities organised towards celebrating ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’, commemorating 75 years of Independence.
  • The Controlled Aerial Delivery System (CADS-500) is used for the precise delivery of the payloads up to 500 kgs at a predetermined location by making the use of manoeuvrable capabilities of the Ram Air Parachute (RAP).
  • It uses the Global Positioning System for the coordinates, altitude and heading sensors for the heading information during its flight.
  • The CADS, with its onboard electronics unit, autonomously steers its flight path using waypoint navigation towards target location by operating controls.
  • System performance was demonstrated at Drop Zone, Malpura from an altitude of 5000m.
  • The system was para-dropped from AN32 aircraft and then steered to the predesignated landing point in autonomous mode.
  • Eleven paratroopers of the Indian Army and Indian Air Force chased the CADS-500 in air and landed simultaneously.

Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships: Purnima Pandey bags gold, Gurdeep wins bronze

●  India ended the Commonwealth championships with 16 medals – four gold, seven silver, and five bronze in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

●  The country had sent 19 representatives in different categories to compete in 2021.

●  In World Weightlifting Championships 2021 S Bindyarani Devi won the Gold in clean and jerk event in 55kg.

  • The 22-year-old Purnima Pandey became the first Indian woman from this edition to qualify directly for the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Former Union Minister RL Jalappa Passes away

  • On Dec 17, 2021, Veteran Congress leader and former Union Minister R.L. Jalappa passed away at the age of 96.

About RL Jalappa :

  • RL Jalappa was born on October 19, 1925, at Rajanukunte in Doddaballapur of Bengaluru, Karnataka.
  • Jalappa, a four-time Member of Lok Sabha, had also served as Union Minister in the Deve Gowda Cabinet.
  • He was the Chairman of the Sri Devaraj Urs Medical College, Kolar.
  • He was a member of the Karnataka legislative council from 1980 to 1983 & he was a member of the Karnataka legislative assembly (Janata Party) from 1983 to 1996.
  • He joined Janata Dal and was elected to Lok Sabha in 1996, from Chikballapur.
  • He served as Union Minister of Textiles from 1996 to Jan 1998.
  • He served as Cooperation, Home Affairs and Revenue Minister in successive Governments in the State.
