World Fisheries Day: Nov 21

  • World Fisheries Day is observed on 21 November every year by fishing communities across the world.
  • It highlights the importance of healthy oceans, ecosystems and ensure sustainable stocks of fisheries in the world.
  • The first World Fisheries Day was celebrated on November 21, 2015. On the same day, The grand opening of the International Fisherman’s organization was held in New Delhi.
  • A forum for the World Fisheries consortium was established in 1997 and was famously called WFF (World Fisheries Forum). 
  • Under this forum, several participants across the world actively took part in it. Around 18 countries signed a global consensus document that marked the standardization of practices.
  • The memories of WFF in 1997 lay etched in the pages of history because it wrote a new form of working pattern of the fisherfolk community.

World Television Day – Nov 21

  • World Television Day is commemorated on 21 November every year.
  • The day is a reminder of the power of visual media and how it helps in shaping public opinion and influencing world politics.
  • In December 1996 the United Nations proclaimed 21 November as World Television Day commemorating the date on which the first World Television Forum was held in 1996.

Dharmendra Pradhan has inaugurated Centres for nano technology and Indian Knowledge System at IIT Guwahati

  • Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has inaugurated the state-of-the-art Centre for Nanotechnology (CNT) and Centre for Indian Knowledge System (CIKS) at IIT Guwahati.
  • He also released a book on NEP 2020 implementation. Mr Pradhan congratulated IIT Guwahati for achieving excellent rankings in various national and international ranking systems.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has approved works on significant NHs, Roads worth about Rs 3,900 Cr in J&K, Ladakh & Punjab

  • Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has approved works on significant National Highways and Roads worth about 3,900 crore rupees in the Union Territories of J&K and Ladakh and the neighbouring State of Punjab, including the construction of Akhnoor-Poonch road on National Highway

144-A.

  • The highways minister has approved a budget of 441 crore rupees for rehabilitation and up-gradation work to two-lane with a paved shoulder on Akhnoor-Poonch road.
  • The work had been approved under Project Sampark (Border Roads Organization) under Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) Mode.
  • The union minister has also approved construction work of a four to six-lane access-controlled Expressway from the junction with Pathankot-Gurdaspur Road (National Highway-54) near Balsua to the intersection with Hiranagar road in Kathua district of Jammu near village Gurha Baildaran of Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway.
  • The project has been approved on Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM) mode under Bharatmala Pariyojana Phase-II and this will have the cost of 3,044 crore rupees and will cover the State of Punjab and UT of J&K.
  • In the UT of Ladakh, Gadkari has approved construction work of three realignments including Drass, Kharboo, and Kargil between Pandrass-Pashkyum on Zojila-Kargil-Leh road (National Highway-I) with two-lane.
  • The work has been approved under Project Vijayak on Engineering Procurement and Construction Mode and the work has been sanctioned at the cost of 426.14 crore rupees.

Indore wins the title of ‘Cleanest City’ for fifth consecutive time under Swachh Survekshan

  • The President of India Shri Ram Nath Kovind has felicitated the awardees of the cleanest cities of India at the ‘Swachh Amrit Mahotsav’ hosted as part of Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0 by Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA) at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi.
  • The award ceremony, organized to recognize the good work done for Swachhata by towns/ cities, States and Union Territories under various initiatives of the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban), viz.
  • For the fifth consecutive year, Indore was awarded the title of India’s Cleanest City under Swachh Survekshan, while Surat and Vijayawada bagged the second and third spots respectively in the

‘more than 1 lakh population’ category.

  •  In the population category of ‘less than 1 lakh’, Vita, Lonavala and Sasvad, all from Maharashtra, bagged the first, second and third positions respectively.
  • Varanasi emerged as the ‘Best Ganga Town’ while Ahmedabad Cantonment won the title of ‘India’s Cleanest Cantonment’, followed by Meerut Cantonment and Delhi Cantonment. In the category of ‘Fastest Mover’, Hoshangabad (Madhya Pradesh) emerged as the ‘Fastest Mover City’ with a jump of 274 ranks from 361st position in the 2020 rankings to the 87th position this year, thus securing a place among the top 100 cities.
  • In the State awards, Chhattisgarh, for the third consecutive year emerged as the ‘Cleanest State’ in the category of “more than 100 Urban Local Bodies” while Jharkhand, for the second time, won the Cleanest State award in the “less than 100 ULBs category”.
  •  Karnataka and Mizoram became the ‘Fastest Mover States’ in the big (more than 100 ULBs) and small (less than 100 ULBs) state category respectively.

Singapore and India reach agreement on resumption of passenger flights

  • Singapore and India have reached an agreement on resumption of scheduled commercial passenger flights between the two countries. 
  • Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), Singapore’s vaccinated travel lane (VTL) with India will start on November 29, with six designated flights daily from Chennai, Delhi and Mumbai.
  • Applications for vaccinated travel passes (VTP) for short-term visitors and long-term pass holders from India.
  • Airlines can also operate non-VTL flights between India and Singapore, although passengers on non-VTL flights will be subject to the prevailing public health requirements.

6th edition of Indo-French joint military exercise Ex SHAKTI 2021 commences at Draguignan, France

  • The Sixth Edition of Indo – France joint military exercise Ex SHAKTI 2021 has commenced at the Military School of Draguignan, France.
  • The Indian Army contingent is being represented by a composite team of three Officers, three Junior Commissioned Officers and 37 soldiers from a battalion of Gorkha Rifles and support Arms.
  • The training so far has focused on aspects of joint planning, mutual understanding of conduct of operations and identification of coordination aspects required for jointly operating in a Counter-Terrorism environment under United Nations mandate.
  • The contingent apart from joint training went to visit MAZARGUES War Cemetery in Marseilles where 1,002 Indian soldiers of the First World War have been cremated.
  • The Indian and French contingents together presented a Guard of Honor and paid their homage to commemorate the valour of the fallen brave hearts.

BOB Financial Solutions Limited has partnered with NPCI to launch BoB Credit Cards on the RuPay platform:

  • BOB Financial Solutions Limited (BFSL), a Non-Banking Financial Company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Bank of Baroda, has partnered with National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to launch BoB Credit Cards (in two variants of Easy and Premier) on the RuPay platform.
  • Both variants of Credit Cards were launched on the JCB International network to support global acceptance.
  • The cards had various benefits such as 5X Reward Points on select merchant categories, fuel surcharge waiver, pre- and post-purchase EMI offers up to 3 complimentary add-on credit cards for family members enabled by both BFSL and NPCI.
  • The Premier Credit Card offers a personal accidental death insurance cover of up to Rs 50 lakhs.
  • BFSL and NPCI have utilized First Vision TM from Fiserv, a core card processing platform for cards and transaction management, with a set of APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) and microservices for seamless digital enablement.

The Network International, signed MoU with NIPL to facilitate UPI transactions in the UAE

  • The Network International, a digital commerce company based in Dubai, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with NPCI International Payments Ltd (NIPL), the international arm of National Payment Corporation of India to facilitate UPI transactions in the UAE.
  • The agreement will benefit Indians, who are visiting UAE by allowing seamless payments through UPI app. Note– In 2020, UPI facilitated transactions in India accounts around USD 457 billion, which is equivalent to approximately 15% of India’s GDP.
  • The proposed implementation of UPI mobile payment solutions on Network International’s merchant network in the UAE is expected to commence in the first quarter of 2022.

Google has announced the 7th edition of its Google for India event 2021

  • Google has announced the 7th edition of its Google for India event 2021 held virtually.
  • The event emphasizes making the internet safer for a billion Indians and empowering the country to become a leading digital economy
  • Google has announced a global-first feature in India that will let users hear search results out loud, the feature will enable people to hear by simply asking Google Assistant to read out the search results.
  • Google announced its support of voice-assisted bookings for vaccinations on the COWIN platform with the help of the Google Assistant.
  • Google Search was now enabled to show results in more Indian local languages, especially when a user searches in their language, instead of showing results in English on top.
  • Google has added the My Shop feature to Google Pay. The tool will be available to merchants using Google Pay for Business app to help them ‘digitise’ their journey.
  • Google partnered with non-profit Armaan for Mitra program in partnership to help benefit women who are pregnant and very often lack access to basic healthcare.
  • The company announced strengthening of the Google Career Certificate program to help more people acquire new digital skills.

Saurav Ganguly has been appointed as the Chairman of the International Cricket Council Men’s Cricket Committee

  • The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President and former cricketer Saurav Ganguly was appointed as the Chairman of the International Cricket Council Men’s Cricket Committee.
  • He succeeded Anil Kumble, a former Indian cricketer who stepped down after serving a maximum of three continuous, 3-year terms.
  • The ‘ICC Women’s Committee’ will be known as the ‘ICC Women’s Cricket Committee’ and will assume all decision-making responsibility for women’s cricket reporting directly to the Chief Executives Committee
  • The ICC Board also approved ‘first-class status’ and ‘list A classification’ to women’s cricket to align with the men’s game.
  • The Pakistan Cricket Board Chief Ramiz Raja will be a part of the ICC Working Group appointed by the Board to review the status of cricket in Afghanistan.

INS Visakhapatnam commissioned into Indian Navy

  • On Nov 21, 2021, INS Visakhapatnam has been formally commissioned into the Indian Navy in the presence of Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai.

About INS Visakhapatnam :

  • INS Visakhapatnam is a P15B stealth-guided missile destroyer.
  • It has been constructed using indigenous steel DMR 249A & it measures 163m in length, 17m in breadth with a displacement of 7,400 tonnes.
  • This is the first of the four ‘Visakhapatnam’ class destroyers.
  • It is indigenously designed by the Indian Navy’s in-house organisation Directorate of Naval Design and constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, Mumbai.
  • It was commissioned in the presence of Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh.
  • It is the first stealth guided-missile destroyer of the Rs 35,000 crore Project 15B.
  • The next ship is set to be commissioned in 2023 while the other two are planned to be inducted by 2025.

IPF Smart Policing Index 2021: Andhra Pradesh, Telangana tops

  • On Nov 18, 2021, according to the Indian Police Foundation Smart Policing Index 2021, Andhra Pradesh Police topped among 29 states and Union Territories, released by Indian Police Foundation (IPF).

Top 5 in IPF Smart Policing Index 2021:

  1. Andhra Pradesh – 8.11 out of 10
  2. Telangana – 8.10
  3. Assam – 7.89
  4. Kerala – 7.53
  5. Sikkim – 7.18
  • At the bottom were Bihar (5.74), Uttar Pradesh (5.81), Chhattisgarh (5.93), Jharkhand (6.07) and Punjab (6.07).
  • Karnataka was found at the 14th position with a score of 6.69.
  • The SMART Policing idea was envisioned, articulated and introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Conference of DGPs of State and Central Police Organizations, held at Guwahati, in 2014.
  • SMART policing envisaged systemic changes to transform the police to be: Strict and Sensitive, Modern and Mobile, Alert and Accountable, Reliable and Responsive, Tech-savvy and Trained.
  • The IPF designed the survey questionnaire around 10 areas of SMART policing, comprising six indicators of competence, three indicators of values and one on public trust and the SMART scores are set on a scale of 1 to 10 and are indicative of the levels of citizen satisfaction, a score of 10 being the highest level of satisfaction.

Delhi’s Sadar Bazar police station ranked India’s best – MHA 

  • On Nov 19, 2021, The Sadar Bazar police station in Delhi was ranked as the best police station in the country in the annual rankings of police stations for the 2021 by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
  • The list was prepared on the basis of a performance review of police stations, carried out by the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPRD).
  • Home Minister Amit Shah handed over trophies to SHOs of the top three ranking police stations at the DGP conference being organized by the Intelligence Bureau in Lucknow.

  • The police stations are ranked each year as per directions given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the 2015 DGP conference held in Kutch, Gujarat.
  • The ranking process assesses the performance of police stations on parameters like

  4. Missing persons cases, infrastructure, approachability of personnel and feedback of citizens etc.

2021 Asian Archery Championships: India Ends With Seven Medals

  • In the 2021 Asian Archery Championships, India concluded their tournament by winning one gold, four silver and two bronze medals, sitting second on the medal tally held in Dhaka, Bangladesh from November 14, 2021, to November 19, 2021.
  • South Korea won 15 medals to top the medal table, meanwhile the host Bangladesh settled at third place with 3 medals.

  • 25-year-old Indian archer, Jyothi Surekha Vennam, has clinched the gold medal in women’s individual compound after defeating South Korea’s Oh Yoohyun 146-145 in a final.
  • Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Rishabh Yadav also had to settle for silver in the compound mixed team, losing 155-154 to South Korea’s Choi Yonghee and Kim Yunhee.

Note :

  • 2019 Asian Archery Championships was held in Bangkok, Thailand & India has bagged one gold, two silver and four bronze medals in 2019.

Lewis Hamilton wins 2021 F1 Qatar Grand Prix

  • On Nov 21, 2021, Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes-Great Britain), won the 2021 F1 Qatar Grand Prix.
  • Max Verstappen (Red Bull – Netherlands) came second while Fernando Alonso (Alpine- Spain) came third. 
  • With this, Lewis Hamilton has become the first driver to have won at 30 different circuits in Formula 1.

Punjabi folk singer Gurmeet Bawa passes away

  • On Nov 21, 2021, Renowned Punjabi folk singer Gurmeet Bawa passed away.
  • She was 77.

About Gurmeet Bawa :

  • Gurmeet Bawa was born as Gurmeet Kaur in 1944 Kothe, Punjab, British India.
  • She is popularly known as ‘Lambi hek di malika’ (the queen of singing in an extended breath).
  • She became popular across the country after singing the Punjab folk song “Jugni.”
  • She was known for her long ‘hek’ (singing in single breath) that she could hold for a record 45 seconds.
  • She was the first Punjabi female singer to sing on Doordarshan.

Awards & Honours :

  • Bawa was conferred with the state award by the Punjab government in 1991, Sangeet Puraskar by the Punjab Natak Akademi, the national Devi Ahilya Award by the Madhya Pradesh government in 2002 and the Shiromani Gayika Award by the Punjabi language department in 2008.
  • She was also awarded the ‘Rashtrapati Puraskar’ by the Bharti Sangeet Natak Akademi.

The Start-up India Seed Fund Scheme (SISFS)

  • A Start-up is defined as an entity that headquartered in India, which was opened less than year ago and has an annual turnover of less than ₹100 crore.

Launched on:-

The Startup India Seed Fund Scheme (SISFS) was launched on 19th April 2021 by Mr.Piyush Goyal, Minister of Textiles, Minister of Commerce and Industry and Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and also the former Minister of Railways.  Earlier, The Scheme was announced by the  Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi on 16th January 2021 in his Grand Plenary address of ‘Prarambh: StartupIndia International Summit’ organized by department of promotion of industry and internal trade under ministry of commerce and industry. During the announcement of the scheme prime minister narendra modi said we are trying to create a start up system which is based on the mantra “of the youth, by the youth, for the youth”.

Ministry involved :-

Department of promotion of industry and internal trade (DPIIT) will execute and monitor the Startup India Seed Fund Scheme. DPIIT is under the ministry of commerce and industry.

Objective :-

  • Start-up India Seed Fund Scheme (SISFS) aims to provide financial assistance to start-ups for proof of concept, prototype development, product trials, market entry and commercialization.
  • This would enable these start-ups to graduate to a level where they will be able to raise investments from angel investors or venture capitalists or seek loans from commercial banks or financial institutions.

Target group :-

The scheme’s main aim is to provide fund for the start-ups with an innovative idea lacking sufficient fund. Easy availability of capital is essential for entrepreneurs at the early stages of growth of an enterprise.

Eligibility:-

  • For start-ups-

To avail the scheme a startup should be recognized by DPIIT, incorporated not more than 2 years ago at the time of application. The startup should not have received more than rs.10 lakh of monetary support under any government scheme.

  • For incubators- Start-up incubators are institutions that help entrepreneurs to develop their business, especially in the initial stages

The incubator must be a legal entity:
– A society registered under the Societies Registration Act 1860, or
– A Trust registered under the Indian Trusts Act 1882, or
– A Private Limited company registered under the Companies Act 1956 or the Companies Act 2013, or
– A statutory body created through an Act of the legislature

Corpus :-

According the scheme, for the next 4 years 945 Crore corpus will be divided for provision of seed funding to eligible startups through eligible incubators across India.  Support to an estimated 3,600 start-ups through 300 incubators is expected as per the scheme. When start-ups will avail scheme ,they will get guarantee of help to raise debt going ahead.

Benefits :-

Many innovative business ideas fail to take off due to the absence of this critical capital required at an early stage. To tackle this problem  seed funding is offered to such promising cases, then they can have a multiplier effect in validation of business ideas of many startups, leading to employment generation in the country. The capital required at this stage often presents a make-or-break situation for startups with good business ideas.
