International Museum Day -18th May

  • Every year on May 18, International Museum Day (IMD) is observed.
  • This day is commemorated to emphasise the significance of museums in all cultures.
  • Museums have a significant role in cultural exchange, cultural enrichment, and the development of mutual understanding, collaboration, and peace among people.
  • This year, the theme for International Museum Day is ‘The Power of Museums’.
  • Museums have the power to transform the world around us.
  • As incomparable places of discovery, they teach us about our past and open our minds to new ideas — two essential steps in building a better future.

INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM DAY HISTORY:

  • International Museum Day was first held in 1977.
  • Since then, it has gained increasing attention.
  • The International Museum Day in 2009 attracted 20,000 museums, hosting events in more than 90 countries.
  • The very next year, in 2010, 98 countries were a part of the International Museum Day celebration, whereas, in 2011, 100 countries joined the celebration

  • Museums play an important part in the development of society.
  • They enlighten us about the numerous unknowns and take us to places we have never been before.

Time of Remembrance and Reconciliation – Second World War:

  • Every year on May 8-9, the United Nations observes the Time of Remembrance and Reconciliation for those who died during World War II.
  • It is an annual International Day of Remembrance designated by the United Nations General Assembly on November 22, 2004.
  • The day commemorates all World War II victims.
  • This year marks the 77th anniversary of World War II.

HISTORY

  • On 2 March 2010, the General Assembly invited all Member States, United Nations system entities, non-governmental organisations, and people to celebrate 8-9 May in an appropriate manner to pay respect to all World War II casualties.
  • In the second week of May 2010, the General Assembly conducted a special solemn gathering to commemorate all war victims on the 65th anniversary of the conclusion of World War II.

  • World War II began in 1939 and ended in 1945, though conflicts before led to the world war.
  • Nearly all nations at the time broke out into two warring factions, the Allies and the Axis.
  • Allies included the United Kingdom, U.S.S.R, the United States, and others.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the Shilanyas ceremony:

  • Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi paid an official visit to Lumbini, Nepal, at the request of Nepal’s Prime Minister, Shri Sher Bahadur Deuba, to coincide with the auspicious event of Vaishakha Buddha Purnima.
  • This was Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s fifth visit to Nepal, and his first to Lumbini.

During Visit:

  • Both Prime Ministers paid a visit to the Mayadevi temple, which houses the birthplace of Lord Buddha.
  • The Prime Ministers made donations to the temple and attended Buddhist rites and prayers.
  • The Prime Ministers lit lamps and paid a visit to the Ashoka Pillar, which has the first epigraphic testimony of Lumbini being Lord Buddha’s birthplace.
  • They also watered the sacred Bodhi tree, which Prime Minister Modi donated to Nepal during his visit in 2014.
  • Both Prime Ministers Shri Narendra Modi and Sher Bahadur Deuba attended the “Shilanyas” ceremony for the establishment of the India International Centre for Buddhist Culture and Heritage on an International Buddhist Confederation site at Lumbini (IBC).
  • The Lumbini Development Trust transferred ownership of the site to the IBC in November 2021.
  • With a built-up area of 6300 square metres, it will be the first building in Nepal to achieve Net Zero Emission using Radiant Cooling technology and water bodies. The total cost of the project is expected to be Rs 9846.46 lakhs.

RailTel and WHO launch a mobile container hospital in Visakhapatnam:

  • RailTel Corporation of India Ltd stated that they had created and established a “Health Cloud” at the Andhra Pradesh Med Tech Zone premises in Visakhapatnam (AMTZ).
  • The Andhra Pradesh Med Tech Zone (AMTZ) is the first integrated medical device manufacturing cluster in the world.
  • Louise Agersnap, Head of WHO Innovation Hub, WHO Geneva, officially opened the “Health Cloud” at AMTZ.
  • RailTel has also given complete technological support for the teleconsultation solution for the Mobile Container Hospital, which was designed and manufactured in AMTZ with all of the necessary Hospital setups for ready-to-operation in remote places.

World’s Longest Suspension Bridge Opens In Czech Republic – Sky Bridge 721

  • The world’s longest suspension footbridge named Sky Bridge 721 was opened to the public in Czech Republic’s Dolni Morava village for tourists.
  • The construction took two years and cost 200 million Czech crowns ($8.3 million).

About Sky Bridge 721 :

  • The Sky Bridge 721, is 721-meter (2,365-foot)-long bridge and is built at an altitude of more than 1,100 meters (3,610 feet) above sea level.
  • It connects two ridges of the mountains and hangs up to 95 meters (312 feet) above the valley below.
  • The Bridge is 2-metre-wide and is open to children of all ages and heights, but is not suitable for people with pushchairs or wheelchairs.
  • The Czech Republic Sky Bridge is 154 meters longer than Nepal’s Baglung Parbat Footbridg (567 meters), which currently holds the Guinness World Record for the longest suspension footbridge.

Rajasthan’s Ramgarh Vishdhari Sanctuary notified as India’s 52nd tiger reserve                         

  • Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav has announced that The Ramgarh Vishdhari Sanctuary in Rajasthan was notified as India’s 52nd tiger reserve
  • The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) had given in-principle approval to make Ramgarh Vishdhari Wildlife Sanctuary and adjoining areas as tiger reserves on July 5 2021.
  • It is Rajasthan’s fourth tiger reserve after Ranthambore Tiger Reserve (RTR) in Sawai Madhopur, Sariska Tiger Reserve (STR) in Alwar, Mukundra Hills Tiger Reserve (MHTR) in Kota.

About Ramgarh Vishdhari Sanctuary :

  • Ramgarh Vishadhri, located mostly in Bundi district and in part in Bhilwara and Kota districts.
  • The reserve will be spread in an area of 1,501.89 sq km.
  • Wild animals like Indian wolf, leopard, striped hyena, sloth bear, golden jackal, chinkara, nilgai and fox can be seen in the Ramgarh Vishdhari Tiger Reserve.
  • The area has been called ‘critical’ for the movement of tigers by wildlife experts and conservationists.
  • According to the “Status of Tigers in India” report released in 2019, there are 2,967 tigers in 20 states in India.

Punjab CM Mann launches ‘Lok Milni’ for redressal of grievances of people

  • Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant has launched a first-of-its-kind public interaction programme, ‘Lok Milni’, on hearing grievances of people and issuing directions for their redressal.

Aim :

  • To provide a single-window platform to the people for redressal of their complaints.
  • People from different parts of the state came with several complaints regarding encroachment of panchayat land, land dispute, pending arrears of Shagun scheme and others.
  • 61 complainants listed their grievances before the chief minister during this ‘Lok Milni’.

Key Highlights of Lok Milni :

  • Lok Milni ensures that the matters flagged by people are immediately resolved on the spot.
  • It facilitates resolution of long-pending administrative issues concerning people.

Delhi Government Announces Delhi Startup Policy for Entrepreneurs

  • The Delhi Cabinet has approved the implementation of the Delhi Startup Policy.

Aim :

  • To create business leaders and entrepreneurs from among the youth and make Delhi the startup destination of the world.

Purpose :

  • To create an enabling ecosystem for people to launch startups and avail of a host of handholding measures such as fiscal and non-fiscal incentives, collateral-free loans, and free consultancy from experts, lawyers, and chartered accountants, among others.
  • The 20 members task force will be set up to oversee the startup policy & the task force will have one government official, three people from academia, and the rest will be from the industry.
  • The Delhi government also decided to introduce entrepreneurship classes and the “business blasters” programme in colleges after the successful roll-out of these programmes in schools.
  • The government will form a monitoring committee to oversee the startup policy.
  • This committee will be headed by Delhi’s Finance Minister.
  • The composition of this committee will be 85% representatives from the private sector, 10% from educational institutions and 5% from the government.

World bank sanctions USD 350 billion in Gujarat -SRESTHA-G project

  • The World Bank has approved 350 million dollars aid for the Systems Reform Endeavors for Transformed Health Achievement in Gujarat (SRESTHA-G) project.
  • The five-year total cost of the project will be around USD 500 billion which is approximately Rs 3,750 crore & out of this, USD 350 billion which is approximately Rs 2,625 crore, will be provided by the World Bank.
  • Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel approved the SRESTHA-G project & it will implement the programme through the Health & Family Welfare Department (HEWD).

About SRESTHA-G project :

  • Under the project, the government will undertake the initiative to improve the quality of the health system of the state by expanding the health services to the rural and urban people and strengthening the epidemic prevention system of the state.
  • The programme will focus on four key result areas to improve quality, equity, and comprehensiveness of primary health care, services for adolescent girls and the capacity of disease surveillance systems.

AXA set to launch mental health insurance in Indian group policies

  • AXA France India, along with its Indian insurance partners, is set to launch mental health insurance cover in its group policies.
  • The mental health insurance would provide Rs 25,000 for consultation with therapists, psychologists, life coaches, among others through virtual mode, and up to Rs 1 lakh for hospitalization.
  • The cover would also provide free mental health assessment tests as recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
  • In addition to that, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs & Culture Arjun Ram Meghwal, launched a free mental health helpline run by AXA France Vie’s India division and Delhi-based non governmental organization (NGO) Manas Foundation.

  • The 24X7 pan India helpline will provide mental health support and consultations from counselors and psychologists.

India becomes 4th largest vehicle market – OICA Report            

  • According to the latest report released by the Organization Internationale des Constructeurs d’Automobiles (OICA), India overtakes Germany to become 4th largest vehicle market in the world.

  3. Japan

Key Highlights :

  • OICA, the international trade association formed of 39 national automotive industry trade associations  India saw 3,759,398 vehicles sold in 2021, compared to 2,973,319 vehicles in Germany & this indicated a difference of almost 26 percent.
  • In 2019 India had grabbed the fourth spot and was expected to become the third-largest by 2025 & it is possible for India to surpass Japan with sales of 4,448,340 units in 2021.
  • The opportunities in the Indian market is that vehicle penetration in the personal mobility space is around 33 vehicles per 1,000, which is one of the losses compared to the developed market.

  • British mountaineer Kenton Cool has scaled the world’s highest mountain for the 16th time becoming the first foreign climber to make the most Mt Everest summits
  • Previously, American climber Dave Hahn has climbed Mt Everest 15 times.

About Kenton Cool :

  • A 48-year-old British national, who hails from Gloucestershire, an area in South West England.
  • In 2013, Kenton Cool became the first person in history to complete the ‘Everest Triple Crown’, climbing the peaks of Everest, Nuptse and Lhotse
  • He is also the first British guide to lead a client to the summit of K2, the world’s second-highest mountain.

Investors lose approximately Rs 50,000 crore as a result of the delayed listing of LIC shares:

  • Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) shares began trading on stock exchanges at a discount to the initial public offering price.
  • The insurance behemoth’s shares began trading on the BSE and NSE for Rs 872 per share, an 8.11 per cent decrease from the IPO price of Rs 949 per share.
  • Despite the fact that the Sensex and Nifty were in the green, equities plummeted.
  • The LIC public issue of Rs 21,000 crore is the largest Dalal Street has ever witnessed.
  • Earlier this month, the offering had a strong response from all investor groups during a six-day subscription period, rather than the standard three-day period.
  • Meanwhile, LIC policyholders received a Rs 60 per share cut, resulting in a break-even price of Rs 889 per share.

Kenton Cool, a British mountaineer, becomes the first foreigner to scale Everest 16 times:

  • Kenton Cool, a British climber, has conquered the world’s highest mountain for the 16th time, becoming the first foreign climber to do so.
  • Kenton is also the first British mountaineer to have climbed Mt Nuptse, Mt Everest, and Mt Lhotse all in the same season in 2013.
  • Kenton reached the summit of Mt Lhotse in less than 29 hours last year after scaling the world’s highest peak.
  • Dave Hahn, an American climber, previously scaled Mt. Everest 15 times.

  • World number one Novak Djokovic of Serbia defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas to win the 79th Italian Open (Internazionali BNL d’Italia) in Rome and the 38th ATP Masters 1000 title.
  • After defeating Casper Ruud in the semi-finals, Novak Djokovic became the fifth man in the Open Era to reach 1,000 match wins.
  • Iga Swiatek won the Italian Open in women’s singles after defeating Ons Jabeur.
  • Swiatek is just the second player to ever win four or more WTA 1000 titles in a single season after Serena Williams won five in 2013.
  • Swiatek has won every WTA 1000 she has contested this season, winning Doha, Indian Wells, Miami and now Rome.
  • She currently holds five of the last nine WTA 1000 titles.

The BCCI has banned journalist Boria Majumdar for two years in connection with the Wriddhiman Saha affair:

  • The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has banned journalist Boria Majumdar for two years after an internal investigation found him guilty of attempting to “threaten and intimidatewicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha.
  • The BCCI governing council considered the report of a three-member committee and decided to ban Majumdar from playing cricket or interviewing cricketers for two years.

Committee:

  • The BCCI Committee considered both Mr Saha’s and Mr Majumdar’s submissions and found that Mr Majumdar’s conduct was clearly in the character of a threat and intimidation.
  • The BCCI Committee proposed the following punishments to the BCCI Apex Council.

BCCI Committee and imposed the following sanctions:

  1. a two-year ban on accreditation as a member of the press in any cricket match (domestic or international) in India;
  2. a two-year ban on interviewing any registered players in India; and

iii. a two-year restriction on access to any BCCI and member association-owned cricket facilities.”

Tony Brooks, the last surviving F1 race winner from the 1950s, has died:

  • Tony Brooks, a British racing driver known as the “Racing Dentist” for winning six Formula One Grand Prix in the 1950s, has died.
  • He was born in 1932 in the United Kingdom.
  • Tony retired from racing at the age of 29 after working for four different teams: BRM, Vanwall, Ferrari, and Cooper.
  • Following Juan Manuel Fangio, Alberto Ascari, and Stirling Moss, Brooks was the most successful driver of his era.
  • Perhaps his most famous victory was at the 1957 British Grand Prix at Aintree, which he shared with his colleague Moss.
