IFPRI’s Global Food Report 2022: 74 million Indians at risk of suffering from increased hunger level by 2030

  • According to the Global Food Policy Report, 2022 released by the International Food Policy Research Institute(IFPRI), the number of Indians at risk from hunger is expected to be 73.9 million by 2030 and, if the effects of climate change were to be factored in, it would increase to 90.6 million.
  • The report projected a scenario for 2030, that climate change could negatively impact India’s food production and drop by 16% while the number of those at risk from hunger could increase by 23% by 2030.
  • In the 2021 Global Hunger Index, India ranked 101 out of the 116 countries, with a score of 27.5.

Key Highlights of the report :

  • The International Food Policy report also focuses on the issue that climate change will lead to falling crop production i.e. Normally the annual crop production of India is 1.627 which may fall to 1.549.
  • Global food production will grow by about 60% over 2010 levels by 2050 in the context of climate change.
  • Climate change will not impact the average calorie consumption of Indians and this is projected to remain roughly the same at 2,600 kcal per capita per day by 2030 even in a climate change scenario.
  • The average temperature across India is projected to rise by between 2.4°C and 4.4°C by 2100.
  • Similarly, summer heatwaves are projected to triple by 2100 in India.
  • The emission of carbon dioxide per year has drastically increased between 1990 and 2018, particularly in developing countries.
  • In India, the agricultural production data from 1967 to 2016 for several crops showed that average land productivity decreased as average temperature increased and it led to higher levels of warming.
  • As per the reports, Higher temperatures, changing precipitation patterns, sea-level rise, and growing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, such as droughts, cyclones, floods, etc are reducing agricultural productivity, disrupting food supply chains, and displacing communities.
  • As per the report, food systems account for more than a third of the greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change, making their reduction critical to any mitigation attempt
  • Through the establishment and maintenance of carbon sinks in forests, oceans, and soils, agriculture, forestry, and other land use is now the only sector with a substantial potential to become net emissions sink pulling more GHGs out of the atmosphere than it emits

Assessment of the report :
