The Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved the extension of the tenure of the National Commission for Safai Karamcharis (NCSK) for threeyears beyond 31.3.2022. The total implication of the extension for three years would be approximately Rs.43.68 crore. The NCSK has been giving its recommendations to the Government regarding specific programmes for welfare of Safai Karamcharis, study and evaluate the existing welfare programmes for Safai Karamcharis, investigate cases of specific grievances etc.

The Union Cabinet chaired by Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved the payment of ex-gratia amount of Rs. 973.74 crore pertaining to remaining claims submitted by Lending Institutions (LIs) under Scheme for grant of ex-gratia payment of difference between compound interest and simple interest for six months to borrowers in specified loan accounts. Operational guidelines for the scheme are already issued with the approval of the Cabinet.

The U.S. and Israel conducted a successful test of the Arrow 3 Weapon System designed to “intercept ballistic missiles outside the earth’s atmosphere. It was developed in a joint project between the Defense Ministry’s Missile Defense Organization and the American Missile Defense Agency.  The test was conducted over central Israel. The systems detect incoming threats and calculate launch trajectories for interceptors.

Padma Shri recipient and founder of the Indian Spinal Injuries Center Major HPS Ahluwalia passed away at the age of 85. Major Hari Pal Singh Ahluwalia was an Indian mountaineer, author, social worker and retired Indian Army officer. During his career he made contributions in the fields of adventure, sports, environment, disability and social work. He was the Chairman of Indian Spinal Injuries Center.

He has written thirteen books including two on Everest – “Higher than Everest” and “Faces of Everest”.

India & Denmark agreed to initiate joint research and development on green fuels including green hydrogen, during the Joint S&T Committee meeting on 14th January 2022.  The committee emphasized on development of bilateral collaboration on innovation, and technology development, including climate and green transition, energy, water, waste, food, and so on as agreed by the two Prime Ministers while adopting the Green Strategic Partnership – Action Plan 2020-2025.

Federal Bank, in association with Equirus Wealth, has launched a “US Dollar offshore fund” exclusively for their customers. This is in collaboration with SCUBE Capital, a Singapore-based global fund management company. Both NRI and Resident customers of Federal Bank will be able to invest in this fund.  The fund offers a portfolio return (IRR) guidance of around $6.50 per cent per annum with a fund tenor of three years from the date of fund closure with an option to extend by one year. The Portfolio is managed by a highly skilled team with a cumulative experience of over 70 years in managing investments of over $50 billion.

On Jan 17, 2022, Founder and Managing Director of Texport Industries Narendra Kumar Goenka took over as the Chairman of the Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC). Goenka succeeded Padma Shri Awardee Dr. A Sakthivel in the position. Mr. Goenka was the Vice Chairman of the apex body of Indian apparel exporters before taking charge as Chairman of AEPC. AEPC is the official body of apparel exporters in India, under the aegis of Ministry of Textiles.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, has approved the equity infusion of Rs.1500 crore in Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency Limited (IREDA). This equity infusion will help in employment generation of approximately 10200 jobs-year and CO2 equivalent emission reduction of approximately 7.49 Million Tonnes CO2/year. To lend Rs.12000 crore approximately to the RE sector, thus facilitate the debt requirement of RE of additional capacity of approximately 3500-4000 MW.

A completely new Tupolev Tu-160M strategic missile-carrying bomber nicknamed the ‘White Swan’ by Russian military pilots performed its debut flight from the aerodrome of the Kazan Aviation Enterprise. The newly-built strategic bomber performed its flight at an altitude of 600 meters that lasted about 30 minutes. Russia’s newly-built Tu-160M strategic missile-carrying bomber has 80% of its equipment upgraded. The Tupolev Tu-160 strategic missile-carrying bomber can eventually carry new, including breakthrough weapons.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has partnered with Canada Running Series (CRS) to become the new title sponsor and official IT services and technology consulting partner of the Toronto Waterfront Marathon and Virtual Race through November 2026. TCS and CRS aim to modernize marathon running in Canada through a new official race app. It will offer a first-of-its-kind environmental impact calculator that will enable runners and spectators to track and offset their environmental impact. On Jan 18, 2022, Legendary Bengali cartoonist and Padma Shri Awardee Narayan Debnath passed away at the age of 96. Narayan Debnath was born on 25 November 1925 in Howrah, Bengal Presidency, and British India. He was an Indian comics artist, writer and illustrator. He was the creator of the popular Bengali comic strips of Handa Bhonda (1962), Bantul the Great (1965) and Nonte Phonte (1969).

It also represents a significant step towards the ‘Atmanirbhar’ initiative, which is aimed at making India a self-reliant nation. The industry funded projects that fall under the ‘Make-II’ category include prototype development of equipment and their upgrades and sub-systems.
